You assume that the company is a rational actor, but with their apparent recent history of exploitation and lifting assets from a different game, it's clear that they have no regard to the opinion of others: the original creator, the one who ported it to mobile, or the devs they stole the assets from.

I sincerely hope they respond to your message and sort this shit out, but I'm at a pessimistic standpoint of not expecting the best. It's definitely worth a shot to reaching out, but know that none of this has ever been in your favour.

But at least it's a great starting point to talk about how releasing a good idea into the public domain would cause heartbreak, fallout, and cannibalization.

I'm still hoping that this whole kerfuffle is an elaborate scheme to show that society still hasn't progressed past caveman discord, just like players in OHOL. I just love it when games are used to illustrate the human condition.

#2 Re: Main Forum » Open Letter to the Mobile Developers » 2019-03-07 05:27:45

The publisher would've yoinked the IP and assets even if Christoffer wasn't involved. They probably partnered up with him to gain access to the touch screen control scheme (which I don't think is public domain since Christoffer developed it) and inject ads into the app.

Now that the company realized that it's public domain/don't actually care about international IP laws, they probably severed ties with Christoffer and went full ham to maximize profits.

Let's be real, companies clearly don't care about the creator's moral system. You know what they say, "The money is always right!"

What on earth?

You are making an adaptation of a public domain work!  You should have absolutely no expectations of exclusivity, not to the name, the idea, the graphics, the gameplay... none of it!

Copycats "taking" the name?  What name?  The name that I invented?  The name that I permitted you (and anyone else) to use?

You are a "copycat" yourself, don't forget, in no better position than anyone else who wants to make an OHOL adaptation.

You were a first mover in the mobile space, but that doesn't mean that you have any homesteader's rights.

I'm honestly surprised that there aren't more people trying to capitalize on the success of the mobile game.

Is this Jason's elaborate scheme to poke holes at how garbage international IP laws are?

More options/alternative tech tree branches.

#6 Re: Main Forum » Why do you play OHOL? » 2018-08-30 04:52:24

I enjoy games where you repeat the same actions over and over.

I also like the salt on this forum and the people that try to indoctrinate others with their own moral system and the ensuing 6+ pages of stubborn opinionated people duking it out with half-assed pseudo-philosophical shenanigans.

Am I crazy or has there been an unusually high amount of new players over this last week? I wonder why.

Probably the mobile players migrating over. There’s a big boom in Japan with OHOL mobile.

No, if they can't handle a four letter word, I don't think they can handle this game.

It's going to be chaos, black text everywhere for the next few weeks. Wonder what will happen to the "kill all cursed baby" rule when a large portion of the population is cursed... Wow, this is exciting.

Sounds like an isolated problem. Glad it was fixed tho.

#14 Re: Main Forum » Paper Message Recommendations? » 2018-08-24 20:36:37

Maybe a riddle that'll lead to a chest full of shrooms?

#15 Re: Main Forum » Having Fun and Messing Around is NOT Griefing » 2018-08-24 13:06:44

Sooooo in conclusion: communicate more, initiate the conversation and tell people to stop mooching... and then cull out the moochers?

#16 Re: Main Forum » Ok, i'm stupid but I can't get past the tutorial. » 2018-08-24 12:42:35

It’s not mandatory, but knowing how to make steel tools is definitely something you should know. Try watching speed runs of the tutorial to see max efficiency in action. I usually make an axe, shovel, file, chisel, bow at the end of the tutorial.

In the torch room, ignore lighting the torch, use all the milkweeds to make a snare, short shaft, rope, and hatchet. Empty out the wooden box and put all the stuff in it with the basket. Attach a straight shaft to the box and lug the whole thing to the last room.

Here, set up the snare, make an adobe furnace, make the clay thing for the bellow, 2 bowls, 2 plates, 2 tongs, 1 adobe lump, the bow drill with the stuff from previous room, make a fire, light the furnace.

Then, quickly bake the 5 clay things and close the furnace to make charcoal. During that time, skin rabbit, cook rabbit in the hot coals, make needle, make water thing, make a bellow, attach clay piece.

Empty out the charcoals, feed the hot coal with kindling to make fire, make more charcoals, place charcoal in each bowl, light the charcoal with the bellow, heat iron ore, pound it (repeat x3 ore).

Make the hammer first, then the axe and shovel. If it’s too hard to make both, make the axe, chop the tree, use firewood to burn in the campfire.

I personally fancy the basket. Easy to make (wheat or reeds), great for exploring, and bringing back various souvenirs is a joy to the community. Now with the stacking update, it's pretty spicy.

Thanks for your continued hard work. Have a good vacay.

#19 Re: Main Forum » Bears » 2018-08-22 12:58:43

Trapping bears in their cave is an underrated tactic that is a good investment for the future. But I guess the shovel use cost for pits could be too much of a drawback... but well, it might be an inevitable sacrifice to keep a city safe in the long run.

#20 Re: Main Forum » Having Fun and Messing Around is NOT Griefing » 2018-08-22 12:51:44

Ah yes, the age old clash of ideals, people trying to convince the other party that their own play style is the just one. OHOL is a good platform to explore individual moral system and compare it to others. This topic was a great read and food-for-thought.
