#2 Re: Main Forum » how I ensured the survival of my village by doing nothing! » 2019-01-21 22:30:27

i generally play during low hours n find that having around 6 yum bonuses while running around naked in desert gives about the same amount of kids. u coulda prolly watered some plants while u were at it but whatever works for u i guess

how bloodthirsty... must be the cousin of the guy that chased me with a bow with no arrow in it

#4 Re: Main Forum » New Players Bad for Villages? » 2019-01-20 01:34:49

i only find new players bad in eve camps up to around gen 3/4. in big towns they are tolerable b/c there are multiple sources of food, iron, compost so whatever mistake they make does not impact the society too much. but in smaller camps where every backpack is a valued commodity and hoarding knives can lead to pen crowding and therefore shortage of compost and dirt (=death). its just not practical to dedicate so much time (usually takes around 30-40 years to teach a new player something in its entirety) to having two people do a single job when every member counts

ive kinda given up on raising kids tho tbh so distinguishing between new and good players doesnt matter to me anymore. i generally just name em n plop em down in a baby pile. i find that this method leads to newer players dying at ages 5/6 which is fine with me cos then ive given them a chance to live by leaving them with a female that takes care of them

however i have been teaching clever new players to compost and bake recently. only one at a time tho and in bigger towns. i dont like leaving farms up to new players cos all they do is endlessly expand berry fields which is a waste of time n resources. teaching clever new players results in very productive members who are actually motivated to do their best (mom is proud of u boston jackson!! even if u died at age 30 u died mid-bake and thats a good way to go)

#5 Re: Main Forum » Animal Whistles, spray » 2019-01-14 05:31:21

also could add a fire + fresh leave= smokey fire to create a protective zone from mosquitos. smoke is known to be good for keeping away bugs so it makes sense while still keeping them a threat

#6 Re: Main Forum » Favorite OHOL Character? » 2019-01-10 04:43:19

i fucking hate the ginger man. i played as him n nobody trusted me even tho i was doing so much for sheep n baking my whole life bc i just looked shady. i was tryna clothe some kids n the lady watching em thought i was gonna run n murder em n it made me sad. also when he reaches elder status he looks like a hairy walnut or a tumor... or a tumor on a hairy walnut

#7 Re: Main Forum » Teo plays OHOL » 2019-01-09 08:07:54

cos of this vid his other vids r on my recommendations n dude this fucking video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMJVYtgOLQM of him trying to play the tutorial is MURDERING ME

it also makes me feel strongly that first 3 lives as a new player should be born to a mom n not as eve jesus watching him suffer is too much

#8 Re: Main Forum » Yum chain broke by feeders » 2019-01-09 02:01:22

maybe something like "toggle on autofeed" would be a good option to have in the menu n have it "on" automatically b/c noobs tend to forget to eat when learning

pein wrote:

say your name as twins

this would be a good method of ensuring that the twins are not griefers.... but also pein werent there a couple of ppl pretending to be u a while back? if we start using this as a method for confirming the identity of twins that dumb identity theft might happen again

i had an idea tho: what if there was a special option specifically for the "play with friends" option that lets u choose to eve? that way the idea of an "adam" thats been pushed about for a bit could happen while also giving ppl who play with others an option to be automatically guaranteed a life without abandonment

also - if jason goes back on his idea of "blessing" ppl (to recap it was supposed to work like the curse system but in reverse so if u get enough blessings ur speech turns blue to indicate ur a nice player) that creates visual markers but only kicks in *during infanthood* and when *playing with friends* it would help ppl distinguish the good twins from the shitty bad twins

WomanWizard wrote:

The thing about twins is that they are more obvious, so you are more likely to remember them when something goes wrong. When they grief it's sticks out more because one, they are twins and that's unusual, and two, it hurts more because they are often more coordinated. But being more coordinated can also be a great thing when they work together to help the town. I feel that many of them grief because they're treated like garbage at birth, which is true for non-twins as well. Unfortunately the twins are more likely to be able to do something about it.

Your newbies are also far more likely to survive if they are paired with a twin. I've been playing with my brother after getting him the game for Christmas and being able to stuff a pie in his face while he's audibly worrying about starving to death is surprisingly helpful.

i havent played much since the dog update so idk if donkey town had a big impact on the number of griefer twins around but i have only raised one set of twins that i couldnt confirm were griefers. the point of the list was that ive given them quite a few chances but they were either too new (and therefore just eating and not learning or contributing) or lineage-enders

i want to trust twins and i want to give them a chance b/c i know a lot of good ppl like to twin!! but currently saying "keep twins" is like saying "keep every baby" - there are situation when u can afford to keep them but more where keeping them hurts the lineage

personally id only keep twins in a big, older town. maybe ill give raising them a shot again if cursing mechanics are changed but for now... its baby skeleton time

#10 Re: Main Forum » On twins (again) » 2019-01-08 08:45:46

when twins first came out i was super excited to raise them and see how it turns out - here are the ones that stuck out to me

1. a set of triplets abandoned by their mother at birth. i was a male and fed them anyways. they were good kids but after i died they went on a murdering rampage
2. a set of twins (born to my sister who i warned about the dangers of twins) who ended up killing the lineage
3. a set of triplets who i raised in an eve camp (first time trying to raise multiples in an eve camp) who sucked up all the wild food in the area. one died early so the others suicided at age 6, leaving all my girls to starve
4. a set of twins who ate up all everything in camp and force fed all the adults, resulting in a famine

the issue is that with coordination this kind of shitty griefing is possible. recently ive seen good twins who do a lot to help out the family and i understand that but when you have a small line its a big risk to just hope that the multiples you are raising arent assholes. there needs to be a special method to deal with twins - maybe making it so that when one is on a murder cooldown both of them are stunned would help. either way, ive raised more shitty lineage-ending twins than good ones so i'd rather be safe than sorry hmm tho i wont stop others from raising them after i abandon em

omfg when he contracted yellow fever the second time i just lost it brO the fliEs. good to see the tutorials helping a bit tho. he knew how to eat!!!

The key to surviving yellow fever is temperature management.  If you don't have clothes that are very insulating and stay out of jungle and desert, it is generally survivable.

People seem to obsess over getting fed by others - but that's only treating the secondary symptom.  You get hungry fast because your heat goes up.  If you can modulate your fever by staying in the ice biome, you will be fine.  It just means you can't keep doing whatever you were doing - like feeding a baby.

I don't think your emoting had anything to do with it.

ok thanks!

That's completely normal.

Yellow fever is survivable (without assistance) so long as you go to a neutral biome (or ice is even better) quickly enough, without much clothing.

The fever lasts 35 seconds, so if you start with all 6 pips you can survive at 5.84 sec/pip.

updating with numbers; from the python heat simulator I've been using

Biome Ins% playerHeat Sec/Pip
Ice 0% 0.5063 21.75
Ice 52% 0.8968 6.13

Neut 0% 0.6346 16.61
Neut 40% 0.9100 5.599

(Playlists appreciated)

i looked back on the recording and when i contracted yellow fever i dropped to 2 pips. i was at 1 pip for around 22 seconds (i tried timing it i might be a bit off but it was somewhere around that) before my mom picked me up. idk how to upload the file but heres what my temp was at for around 18~20 of the 22 seconds

also this is when i contracted the yellow fever if it helps at all

when i was born my mom caught yellow fever, and i caught it as well. I had maybe 4 or 5 food bars in total and it was at three bars when i caught the fever

we stood on the ice biome and i spammed emotes (since i was dying i wanted to do /sad but apparently we cant emote when we're yellow)

it seemed like i was stuck on two food bars for a bit longer than normal and so i managed to live long enough for my mom to recover

not really sure if it was just my imagination or because i reached perfect temp just in time to survive. if any of u end up in this situation (with yellow fever on low hunger bar) can u try out spamming emotes and let me know if it was just my imagination?

lol jk i agree tho clothes r rly only good for travelling outside of the camp. should be able to create clothes that give protection too

thanks for investigating! yeah i figured by the last words they might have been innocent... but they could have also been trying to frame polo for griefing. my theory was that polo and the other man went to the south village to retrieve more tools for the village up north and my boys mistook them for griefers hiding tools. either way i found it kinda sad that (if they were innocent) i left them in an isolated village all their lives

@ sinfulcliche

yeah i think there might have been quite a few murders between your time and mine in that line. i thought thats what the bodies in the village were from

What about moving this compilation to the wiki? That way everyone can make contributions and keep it up to date.

i have absolutely no idea how to edit the wiki but if anyone wants to do that feel free!

The mechanics have changed (now 7 heat, for 35 seconds, and 30% food) and the rest of the comments are conjecture.

There's scattered discussion about mosquitos, but no thorough guide I've seen. Pein's had practice trapping them, but still no definitives.

thanks! moved it to outdated section. also titles are now also red

btw!! i plan to stop updating this compilation starting February next year so if anyone wants to continue updating it feel free to copy n paste this post to continue compiling stuff! when i stop updating it i'll change the title to reflect that

its been a while since ive lived a life that i genuinely was curious about so heres my question to my two sons mischa and chanze: were you two griefers? if not i apologize for abandoning you two

__

the first thing i remember about being born is a question posed by my mother. "do you want to help us build a temple?" she asked

"y" i replied

so she named me lorissa and asked me to bring home cut stone and flat rocks. as soon as i grew hair i took off to gather supplies to help my mother build her temple

my journey was a little confounded but i eventually stumbled upon another mid-sized village off south. it was littered with nameless bodies, and in the midst there was a woman and her two sons, packing to leave the place

i asked the woman, "have you seen the rocky biome?" and she said she did not

but i managed to find some flat stones off the west and an extra cart in the village. i was still small so i spent the rest of my time stacking up flat stones to take home to my mother, waiting to grow strong enough to pull the cart. that was when one of the woman's sons approached me

he said, "ma is planning to leave. i think she wants you to come with us"

they intended to flee to the village i was born in. i did not know why, their village was still nice, with a few wells surrounding it and a pile of iron waiting to be smelted into useful goods. i told him that i intended to go back home after i was big enough to pull the cart

that's when the woman emerged from the farm, greyed and holding a screaming baby girl. she was too old to travel she said. "go on without me" she told her sons.

so i decided to lead the way for the two boys and return to collect my rocks later

when i returned to the village only the corpses remained. i made my runs back and forth for flat stones, and when my first son was born in the south village i carried him back home as well

when mother no longer needed flat stones she asked me to bring her cut stones. finding no shovels in the big village, i returned to the south to where i remembered a few dug up rocks being

it was there that i had my twin boys

now, i would normally not keep twins, having long learned that there is more to lose than gain, especially if they are boys. but we were in the abandoned south village, and they had no knowledge of the way home. so i named them chaos and mischief and raised them there in the small farm. i told them that i was helping my mother build a temple and i had to leave, but that i'd return

"where's the temple?" they asked. and i vaguely replied "northish"

i never intended to bring my sons home, but hoped they would have a fine life in the small village together. when i returned to my mother she was on the verge of death, but her face lit up with joy when she saw me. "all that's left is the walls. just fill the rest with cut stone"

but i didn't know her vision, "where should i put the cut stone??" i asked her, but it was too late. she was already fading

"finish it for me..." she whispered with a final smile

so i put the final missing plank in place and proceeded to try finding a shovel and a chisel to complete her temple. but there was no shovel and no chisel to be found

not wanting to use up the small amount of iron in this village, i decided to head back to the south village with its plenty iron. i hoped that the boys would have died out, or did something to prove their innocence to me. but as i walked in i saw a row of weapons by the furnace

there i was met with a gruesome sight. one of my sons, holding a knife over a body, and a man i presumed to be one of the boys i had led back to the village standing in shock

"its so sad to come back.." he murmured as my second son struck him down as well

one of the boys cried out, "he's a griefer!" but i just ran.

i wove my way around the forest, hoping they would not follow. and when i reached the town i warned all not to go back to the south village

i lived out the most of my life at that big village, making a chisel and shovel from the little iron we had. perhaps someone would go back to the south village in the future, to fetch the iron from there. (wink wink)

not knowing the vision my mother had, i just collected as many cut stones as i could, placing them by the bones of the temple for her, if she ever returned

by the end of my life curiosity filled me. what had become of my boys? so i gave my apron to my oldest son, who had taken care of the field his whole life and ran back to the south village

there i was greeted by a small fire and a familiar face. he had aged, but nonetheless, he greeted me without malice. all the weapons were put away. i asked him of his brother's whereabouts and learned that only the younger, chanze survived. we chatted a little and he thanked me for coming to visit

as i stood in that field, dying, chanze asked, "where is the temple ma?"

so many thoughts rushed through me. it would be sad to leave him there in that village, alone. he had another 30ish years left in him and even stuck around when his brother died. but i'd known trios who would stick around even if one died to cause chaos

i merely replied, "a little north" but it was too suspicious! why wouldnt i just lead him back? hoping he would die on the way and not waste any more time in the dead village i told him, "we could make a wild dash for it. see if i drop dead halfway"

so we ran straight north, past my village and into the rockys where i died.

______
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=2473913

so, a few questions. what happened before to make the murders happen? were they actually griefing? were you two planning to grief? why did the woman leave the village? i saw a bunch of murders in the line a little before my era while i was trying to find out the names of the two boys my kids killed. is that related?

#25 Re: Main Forum » Necessity od day/night cycle or seasons » 2018-12-18 08:05:18

perhaps instead of a day/night cycle we could have a weather system? like a cold season and a hot season that similarly impacts the weather but can be put into terms of years as the game intends. it would probably have to be a rare event to make sure the game isnt constantly shifting so maybe 5-10 years in a 100 year cycle could be extra cold or extra hot. it would be fun to have floods or droughts tbh it would add some variation into the game n give something to prepare for n wait out together as a community smile
