I always thought it was funny when I got killed.  Somebody actually cares enough about this silly little game to go around stabbing people?!  You don't think that's hilarious?

People who want to breed dogs are off playing a pet-battle game where they don't have to keep stopping to eat.

Anyway, nobody needs to play OHOL in the first place.  If it's going to be more an experiment than a game, "players" are going to expect some sort of a reward.

I honestly think the vision would be best realized by a few hundred learning bots, rather than humans that insist on pesky annoyances like having fun.

Do you make up these questions, Mr. Holden?  Or do they write 'em down for you?

Based on average kid lifespan, I'm awarding "parent of the year" trophies to futurebird, Aurora, and Twisted.

It really fundamentally undermines claims about how humans would behave with a UBI.

Maybe if you choose to stop your analysis before contemplating all the ways in which a video game may not be a very good proxy for real life, e.g., the fact that additional work in real life brings greater status, greater opportunities for procreation, etc. as well as the additional sense of accomplishment that a video game (marginally and generally falsely) provides.

Why does anyone want to play this game to stand around clicking carrots? It's a mystery to me.

Why would anyone want to work in a video game?  It's a mystery to me.

I prefer to save my mental reserves for things that do some good, and reserve games for relaxing and replenishment.

Would different corpses contribute to the yum bonus, or would all human flesh be equivalent?

Also:

on a lighter note humans are too salty it's not a pleasant meal...

I presume modern humans would be pretty nasty, but healthy hunter-gatherer types?  Probably pretty palatable.

And here I naively thought this was going to be a request for elephants and mountains that could only be crossed on the backs of elephants (which, now that I think about it, would be pretty cool)

Ehh, "don't negotiate with terrorists" and all that, but even I was considering offering her $20 if she promised to chill out.

Jason agrees with you so far, so it's a moot point anyway.  I just think it would be neat.

You could implement blessing and have each bless bestow a glow upon the blessed (it would stack to make bigger auras).  Not perfect but it would get a good way there.

soo... you want people to grow halos?

Sure, why not?  Give a little positive reinforcement rather than just the negative reinforcement of Donkey Town.

My Popcorn still has two uses left and I'm happy to share.  It's not doing my yum bonus any favors anyway.

#16 Re: Main Forum » Is this game elitest, temp update definitely makes it feel that way? » 2019-02-19 17:33:41

fragilityh14 wrote:

it's not elitist for a game to be challenging. Stop being babies. The fun of the game is that it begins frantic and challenging. it should actually be difficult for an eve camp to survive.

Do any of you remember 25-30 years ago when it commonly actually took some effort to survive a game's first level?

Back then, levels didn't change every week and you could learn to survive them through trial and error.  Even in a game where everything disappeared when you turned off your console, you could still "build" knowledge about how to survive over time.

With this game, some skills and knowledge transfer from update to update, but not as much.  So I think the problem is that it's difficult all the time, with no sense of lasting accomplishment.  Your villages erode quickly, and so does your capability.  Much like in life, except there the rewards for fighting constant erosion are more concrete; a game is generally supposed to give you *something* that makes it preferable to life.

Like it or not, this thread is actually helpful in understanding griefers, at least for me. This guy does what he does anyway, he only chooses to explain it to us. It's not like he would grief less if this thread didn't exist. You can hate what he does, but the game ultimately allows him to play like this and he's just pointing it out to us. That's my take on it.

"OHOL attracts psychopaths because it relies on cooperation and cooperative societies are easy targets, and there aren't effective countermeasures."  It's an old story, pretty dull.

I can understand having a vision but theres a point where you need to have a compromise with your community, i know that population stabilization update had to do with a player suggestion, so im hopefully that he'll pull through.

Well, you can always hold fast, and let the players drift off in search of greener pastures, and have the game die.  I think this is fairly likely... Jason does take suggestions, but those that make the game more fun for casual players seem to go to the bottom of the pile.  In ten+ months we got what, mushrooms and facial expressions?  Versus how many changes to make things harder?

But yeah, who knows, maybe he'll have a change of heart at some point.  I'm not holding my breath.

Why?  People have been asking for a softer bottom-end since shortly after it released.  It isn't what he wants for the game.

#25 Re: Main Forum » Why I feel the last few content updates have been lacking. » 2019-01-19 23:39:45

Does this go back a lot farther?  Do people use plaster and paint?  Do they still make signs?  What about horse-taming?

I haven't played for a while so maybe things have changed, but it seems like... things never changed.
