One Hour One Life is an amazingly unique concept, and Jason R. knows how to make a good game. OHOL is very much in early development, but its still worth playing! (And paying, 20 bucks is very reasonable for this game and I don't regret purchasing it at all)
Admittedly, the game can be frustrating at first. It lacks a clear tutorial, but that's actually a good thing as it forces players to interact and learn from the older generations. The game is very much about community order, and the old teaching the young, and then the young continuing the cycle. There are also lots of good online guides being formed, an active forum, and a growing number of YouTubers making videos in OHOL.
Surviving infancy is the most challenging and headbutt inducing part of the game, but if you manage to live past a few minutes old the game becomes very fun. I'd say on average I survive infancy in about 1 in 10 mothers. That may sound obscene, but its a part of the game and usually if you are going to die as an infant, you die fast and can jump into your next life quickly. When I wrote this review I'd played probably between 10 and 20 hours, and I'd survived to old age (60 minutes) 3 times.
The feeling of dying of old age is one of the most satisfying parts of the game and a very proud achievement. You've watched your village grow under your hand, seen your children grow up and have kids of their own, and probably made some cool things and advanced the technology of your home. Dying at "60" makes the whole game worth it.
Gameplay is also fairly fun, the crafting trees for items can at first seem daunting but once you've done things once or twice its quite fun to craft, build, and advance your society. Admittedly much of your time goes to housekeeping and chores, but a well managed society leaves enough time for you to pursue passion projects. And if your society isn't well managed, you can feel the adrenaline rush of trying to survive, and hopefully the feeling of a job well done if you can turn your society around.
The game is being updated quite regularly for both content and bugs, and each playthrough is an interesting and unique experience. It does have its downsides, and in the early stage it does have some balance issues, but the game is meant to be difficult. Survival is no easy thing and this is the first game in a long time where I felt challenged and like I was fighting for every success. But of course that meant that every success was that much more gratifying.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who is interested, you will find many fun hours in it. Plus, its being quite actively developed by a guy who really cares about his games, and is committed to adding cool things and making it smooth to play.
Good luck in OHOL, and may your fires burn long and your pies fill your belly even longer! |
