I enjoyed my first several attempts at rebuilding civilization. After about 2 hours, I'd managed to *almost* get a fire going-- yes, the game is hard.
Several of my early spawns were as a baby. My first mother immediately walked away from me, with no comment, and I unceremoniously starved. The world is a cruel, cruel place.
Surprisingly , though, my subsequent spawns were more successful. A handful of mothers gave me instructions of how to behave as a baby: cry when hungry, follow, stay nursing, etc. Unfortunately, all my parents soon, and me along with them.
I had mixed success when spawning as an Eve. I found the onslaught of children to be overwhelming-- at one point, I found myself with two babies to feed, neither of them yet mature enough to take care of themselves, and only a handful of berry bushes with which to feed them. "I'm sorry baby," I said to the newborn, gorged myself on my remaining berries, and dashed off into the wilderness in hope of finding a berry bounty.
My most frustrating deaths were having a wolf suddenly run onto my screen and instantly kill me (with no opportunity for me to change directions), spawning as an eve, and then immediately spawning a baby (with no berry bushes nearby).
My biggest complaint is that the game's relentless hunger timer doesn't give me much of a chance to communicate with other players. I found myself chatting with other people in discourse to learn the secrets of the game, as opposed to getting that kind of nurture from my mothers. Although I appreciate that this is supposed to be a *hard* game, as it stands the game doesn't give early players much of a chance to exchange knowledge.
Up date: Jason addressed most of the extremely frustrating issues pretty quickly on day 1. The game is still relentlessly difficult, but less randomly cruel now. I'll post an updated review soon! |
