Isnt server 13 the dead one I heard about?

#2 Re: Main Forum » Is the drama gone? » 2018-12-05 05:56:56

Like the OP said though too, at least for me, I dont see MOST of them as griefers but as part of the game - part of the experience. If a lone player manages to kill every female in a town without being stopped isnt that the fault of the other players to not stab them or shoot them? And if they do succeed its another story to be able to tell about the game, about jack the ripper who managed to kill without ever being seen. Whenever I have seen murderers so far it generally ends up with most of the town chasing them down in a big group.

Baby kidnappers / murderers? My very first time logging into this game had me spawn as a princess and get kidnapped. I played on a friends account and had not watched the trailer, seen no videos and knew nothing about the game and my first experience was a kidnapping. And I loved it. The fact that the game let this happen is amazing and helped get me interested.

The people who grief in ways that are more sabotague im not so sure about. I would prefer if they griefed in a more RP way. Hoard food because they are a dooms day prepper, steal all the knives because they are crazy and a murderer and so on. Id like to see more RP friendly trolls.

I did that one life once my diligent work was commended by a few of the elders and I was awarded the crown. Only because I didn't try throwing my weight around did people rally.
As soon as people get entitled, nobody cares.

Every life that I have seen someone with a crown, there always ended up being some interesting RP. Not always from the person wearing it when im born, but sometime during the life at least. In one town I was born twin females with my friend and an old lady gave him a gold crown as a child before she died. When he grew up, he declared himself queen and began trying to instruct new children that were born on what to do when they grow up and such. As he had children, he told each one that they could be ruler one day if they outlive him and are better than their siblings. He had something like 6 or 7 children, all boys except 1. Some of the children RPd as royalty well and made for some fun interactions. As time went on the oldest sibling took his mother off to the side and asked for permission to do what needed to be done, and after being granted permission, proceeded to kill off the members of the previous royal bloodline as most of them seemed to be griefers.

During this witch hunt, the queen was killed by a misplaced arrow and died in a field in town. She had not yet chosen an heir, and all of the siblings had been present for the hunt. A bloodbath ensued. The brothers all killed each other until only one remained, and as he put on the crown and began to speak his sister casually walked up and stabbed him as well, before being killed by a small child who had picked up a knife who wanted to end the battle once and for all. Me being near death due to old age at this point, I searched far and wide for a member of the royal bloodline, but alas they were all dead and I was the last. I gave the crown to the child who killed the princess, as she had earned the right, and promptly died on the spot after telling her to continue our rule.

------------------------------------

Ive had a couple other very fun interactions involving crowns, but its always exciting when I am born and see someone with a crown somewhere.

Making your own private server is easy now, if you're using Windows, thanks to Awbz.

Go to https://github.com/Awbz/OneLife/releases/latest

Download the win_full package

Unzip it

Go to the "server" folder, right-click on "runServer.bat" and choose "Run as administrator"

In the game client, connect to localhost

That's all there is to it!

In the settings folder under the server folder, there are a bunch of configuration files that you can edit to control things like whether or not you randomly spawn, whether you always spawn in the same place, where exactly you spawn, etc.

You won't get to interact with other players (unless you invite them to join you on your private server and open up port forwarding on your router), but you can live life after life after life in the same camp by yourself and practice your civilization-building skills, if that's what you're interested in.

Ah I didn't know it was quite that easy. Might do that later myself as I have only ever spawned as an eve once when I was brand new and would like to experience some how starting alone in the middle of nowhere goes. Obviously it'll be a bit harder without children and such but I can finally do trial and error stuff without interference or ruining stuff other players have done.

#5 Re: Main Forum » Things I wonder why not done more commonly » 2018-12-04 17:04:42

I didn't even know you could plant trees, honestly. Saw a few mentions of it on the forums today but never knew before today. Most of your stuff like the bakery and farm placement is all about that you only survive for an hour at best, and it can be hard to control the flow of an organically growing town if everyone is not on the same page. I do wish I saw more (read: any) towns laid out like you mentioned though, as I am a baker and tend to spend most of my life running super far from the bakery to gather supplies.

This also solves other issue. The mother sees she is pregnant and has some time to prepare (like stopping a horse chart, I was for example one dropped out at the back of a horse likely without the mother realizing...).

The new player get already to see the surroundings* and a "miscarriage" button. If they click, they simply get to the next mum (instead of having to runaway suicide and if they are mean even poke a bear). The experienced player gets to type /die which includes a lineage ban.

* Seeing black but only hearing would be more realistic, but given it's a game and it allows people to less infant suicide...

PS: Might even give the mother to /no ... to make it a miscarriage.. (penalizing her tough)

Amazing idea, i love it. Even the mother could get some sort of button to miscarry the baby instead of wasting the baby's time.

Sometimes a village simply cant support more babies yet, so this is a bit of a better option than simply letting them starve or killing them.

Mosquitoes used to heal wounds. They don't any longer. However as I read this, now as long as you have yellow fever, you are immune to injury. I don't see this helpful tough, it's not like I'm planning to get wounded..

Get bit as baby, kite bear better =P (had to say it because of your other thread we talked in)

I am not saying to keep arrows and a bow on you at all times, but just some around town. I rarely spawn into a town with a single bow at all, I think I have seen a bow only a few times in my entire time playing. If a few were kept around town its a big harder for someone to snag them all and hide them. Really there is no perfect solution but for me, I prefer it the current way over the alternative. Everyone has an opinion though and there is no best way to go about stuff this like. Although my understanding of what the dev wants is that this is working as intended, some humans and good and some are bad.

EDIT:: I do agree with your PS about babies running away, I would be for babies not being able to walk on their own at first and needing an adult to move them around.

#9 Re: Main Forum » Suggestion: Babies shouldn't be able to wake bears. » 2018-12-04 15:01:07

More so I just believe that anyone should be able to disturb a bear. If you get close, the bears gonna mess you up. Once features start getting removed or heavily changed for the annoying players it eventually starts bothering the normal players. I do not like the idea of babies not waking the bear and removing it because of griefers is not the solution in my opinion. A child running off and doing kid things and causing issues for the town sounds normal for me for a kid. If the town does not have bows to take down predators that wander into town, intentionally or not, then that is the fault of the town when they get wiped. Bows and arrows are not hard to make and if more people lured bears and wolves into towns maybe the meta would change to bows and arrows being made in more of an abundance and actually paid attention to, allowing people to defend the town both from intentional and random bear/wolf encounters. Hell I spawned in a bell town once and a bear killed more than half of the town because out of a town with 20+ people and crazy infrastructure, we had a single bow and only 2 arrows and nobody was attempting to craft more of either item.

This times 1000. Best solution to the issue, although also requires the most work on the dev side.

#12 Re: Main Forum » Is there a way to spawn into an old camp? » 2018-12-04 14:44:57

I have spawned into the same town many times. Once three lives in a row I kept spawning into the same town, which made things way easier to keep contributing. If the town has a bell tower or evolves to the point of having one you can try to travel back to it if you are not massively far. Furthest I have traveled to a bell town is about 4 km. Left with a basket of mutton pies and tried to forage as much as I could rather than eat said pies.

#13 Re: Main Forum » Mosquito sprite mod? » 2018-12-04 14:22:10

I remembered this post, and I did rework the bugs in my upcoming texture pack. They are like 3x bigger and look like real flies.

#14 Re: Main Forum » Is there a way to spawn into an old camp? » 2018-12-04 13:23:19

Just if people are still alive there, you could keep doing /die when you spawn elsewhere until you spawn where you want again.

Not looking too shabby so far now. Mostly done with the ground textures. Still need to do some more smoothing to make it harder to see where it repeats.

Ah, I figured it out. For future reference for others, when using gimp to export a new TGA file you need to turn off the RLE compression and set origin to bottom left.

I don't remember for sure, but I believe it was due to after building the client not starting it while sitting ("cd"'ing) in the correct directory ("current working directory"). Better use "./OneLifeApp" in the checkout root. If you using Windows or Mac. No idea.

Directory doesn't matter, I can put the game anywhere on my computer and play it fine until I change any texture.

So I was playing around with the idea of adjusting some textures for fun, but am unsure of the limitations and ran into an issue immediately. All I did so far was adjust the texture for fire but kept the pixels the same, same aspect ratio and everything, literally just changed the color to see if it would work. When I try to load into a game though I get stuck on waiting to be born even though I can hear the sounds of the game and hear myself being fed by my mother and such. Why would it break from such a single change?

So basically just wondering if anyone else here did this yet with success.

#21 Re: Main Forum » better transportation (traveling together) » 2018-12-03 15:45:17

I also agree this is something we need at some point. Some friends and I that spawned as triplets attempted to leave to journey to bell town for fun and it was terribly hard to keep track of each other, especially when dodging bugs and in thick tree cover. Some way to bring others with would be nice.

#22 Re: Main Forum » Idea: Score system » 2018-12-02 21:59:57

I feel too many people might just stop doing important stuff to instead try to get more points and cause towns to fail from that. I dont think a point system would mesh with a game like this.

I have died more than once to situations like this. I wonder how hard it would be to mod the game so that items show over the character instead of under and are pickupable. Although it might then make it impossible to feed someone who is on an item tile.

Being an eve is already  difficult enough and my concern is that putting that extra pressure of diversity in food might make it so even competent players would fail to produce a daughter to continue their lineage as they were rushing to build an eve camp.

Ah yea I was reading his post and though it sounded great, but I def forgot about eves and how diverse food would be pretty hard for them to keep up with. Since eves are a different type of spawn though and the game knows you are an eve, could the eves simply be excluded from the restriction? Their daughters would need to manage the yum for a good number of children but the eve herself could pop as many as possible still to get things started.

#25 Re: Main Forum » To reiterate, just let twins and triblets die. The sooner the better. » 2018-12-02 16:17:31

My friends and I play as twins, triplets and in a few days we will be a quad. I admit, if someone dies young the rest of us kill ourselves to end it quickly. If we make it past childhood and the teenage years and survive to adulthood before someone dies though, we will generally continue that play through. At the very least we like to make sure to contribute before we leave to kill ourselves. I am a baker so I tend to make sure I finish baking a lot first to still give back to the community that spent food and time to raise us.

But yea since we can communicate a bit better through voice when we do survive it is certainly a large boon to the community and often we manage to create an interesting role play experience within the town since we can all cooperate to help get other people in on it.
