Things I wonder why not done more commonly

Maple tree farm near town: It is basically only a one time investment and branches forever as firewood to put into kilns/forges and oven forever.

Bell towers: Okay they are done. But I've been in quite some villages that obviously already have been a while around, some of them had even the pen built out of bell tower bases.. but nobody bothered to somewhere put 2 next to each other... After all the base might live for 18 after all.

Wheat farm next to bakery. In my opinion this should be a no brainer, but no, only very few towns had the wheat farm right next to the bakery. And no it's not about water, because you can carry that one efficiently with buckets, but bowls of wheat is another story. Okay you can make a point about compost.. to be near the pen, and the compost be near the overall farm again. Anyway, way too often the wheat is planted somewhere way outside... with berries as mysterious center..

Bakers taken care of wheat: IMO bakers can take care of wheat as well... if it's next to the farm.

Nurses baking: Also this is are jobs with high synergy. You can feed children while making bread&pies and the newbies learn something different in their babyhood watching you than the usual berry-crazyness. Well at least if you have a second baker that can make the trips to get water and wheat while you as nurse work inside the bakery with the kids and babies.

Dedicated cleaner/sorter. Eggs to eggs, plates to bakery, broken tools to smithy, all carpenter stuff to one place. All tailor stuff to another. IMO this can really affect the well being of a town. (close to) useless stuff to a waste place.

Re: Things I wonder why not done more commonly

I didn't even know you could plant trees, honestly. Saw a few mentions of it on the forums today but never knew before today. Most of your stuff like the bakery and farm placement is all about that you only survive for an hour at best, and it can be hard to control the flow of an organically growing town if everyone is not on the same page. I do wish I saw more (read: any) towns laid out like you mentioned though, as I am a baker and tend to spend most of my life running super far from the bakery to gather supplies.

Make popcorn! No one makes it. All you do is put dried corn in a bowl and use that on a fire.

I've been taking on this role myself recently. It's fun. It's a role that you don't have to compete with anyone to do (unlike smithing, where it's hard to have more than one or maybe two smiths), and you never run out of work to do because nobody has the brains god gave a gooseberry and knows how to move useless garbage out of the way and put useful things where they will be used.

Plus you get to be the grumpy old man complaining about how nobody does anything right and the whole town is full of retards. That's always fun.

And I absolutely know that this has a huge effect on the survival of the town. Very few people realize how devastating clutter can be. But it means the difference between getting a new hoe in time to plant a new wheat crop and get compost working again, versus a famine because compost stopped because wheat stopped because tilling stopped because the hoe broke and nobody could get a hoe made because the smithy was filled with bone needles and omelettes.

Also, you end up travelling all over the town so you can keep appraised of what's going on everywhere. This too is a lot of fun, and is also valuable to the town. You can help coordinate people to get things done that are most urgently needed. And you always know where everything is, and so can help others find what they need.

Did you ever see Casino Town?  It had multiple towns surrounding it and a road with Maple trees planted down it.  Trees of course should be planted but it isn't most peoples high priority.

I like the wheat next to the sheep pen and I like the bakery also close but if there is no space then wheat near poop is more important to me than flour near oven.  Flour can be moved easily using a bowl and removed from bowl with curved shaft.

Bell towers aren't really important but they do get built.

Cleaners used to happen occasionally but it's a boring thankless job so few take it and then keep at it.  Would you spend an hour of your game constantly cleaning for others?  Best thing is to keep your own area clean and remember to return plates to the bakery (something I wish more would do).

Nursing multiples and not just your own only leaves you time to eat, you have a kid "f" ing almost constantly (I've nursed six before only one being mine, it's super time heavy).  Baking whilst raising a single baby is doable and is something I've done.

Think of it the other way around. The bakery should be next to (or near) the wheat farm.

Wheat, sheep, berries, carrots, and compost are too tightly interrelated for them to be very far apart. So the wheat farm's position will always be close to the others.

The bakery will usually be set up away from the farm. Why? Because first the kiln gets built, and then the kiln becomes the forge, and then someone makes an oven and starts making pies... but there's no room to do that near the farm, because the forge is next to the farm, so the oven gets built near the forge but further away from the farm.

What to do?

Move the bakery!

An oven is two adobe. Go set up an oven where you want it to be, in close proximity to the wheat farm (but leave enough room for the farm to grow, and to cycle through multiple plots, and with lots of room to thresh the wheat separately!). Then carry some empty baskets and a stack of plates over there, grab a couple bowls and a stone, and poof you have a new bakery! Leave the already cooked pies behind, and from time to time bring more baskets and plates over.

You'll be so much more efficient in the new location that in no time flat all the pies will be at the new bakery and everyone will be wondering what to do with the empty old one. Send someone with a pick to tear it down and put people's minds at rest.
