That's Awbz's mod (which also allows zoom). Here's the page:

My guinea pig died end of last fall. We breathed each other's air in the same room together, in four different homes, over the course of almost 7 years. RIP Goebbels 2012 - 2018

One of my degus died a couple of weeks ago. +1 for pet rodents in OHOL.

If theres any chance that just i could affect the player base on such a wide scale that would take forever, and i and other people might not even be playing the game that long.

Well you individually doing it isn't going to make a huge difference, but if everyone who read this thread decided to start killing all their noob kids I reckon it would make a pretty significant difference to the average experience new players have.

#4 Re: Main Forum » New Players Bad for Villages? » 2019-01-17 10:20:58

Some people talk as if making your lineage last as long as possible is THE goal of this game. It's certainly a common goal and a fun one, but not the only one. I get much more enjoyment from feeling like I've cooperated with and taught people than from seeing lineage length after I've died. If I was regularly killing babies for bring noobs I think the game would start to leave a sour taste for me pretty quickly.

If having a long lineage IS your primary goal (which is totally fine of course, I'm not expecting everyone to enjoy the same things as me) then is killing noobs a good idea? In the short term of that one lineage, quite possibly it is. But in the longer term effects on the player base, I doubt it.

#5 Re: Main Forum » Quad Eves Going On Server Two » 2019-01-16 23:06:06

Most days of the week I can do daytime (say 10-4) GMT, which I think is about 2-8am PST? Not ideal for fitting with those of you on PST, but on Fridays and Sundays I can go into European evening so that would fit with a PST morning. Or if we find another couple of Europeans Nepumuk and I can start a separate quad town smile

It would be nice to plan the four surnames to be themed somehow - like North South East and West for example, though I'm not sure if those are all on the namelist. Or even just all starting with the same letter - just something to tie the lines together for later generations to see.

#6 Re: Main Forum » Quad Eves Going On Server Two » 2019-01-16 15:36:58

I'd be up for that! What's the best way to coordinate it? Via discord?

#7 Re: Main Forum » Idea: Parrots » 2019-01-14 08:28:48

Yeah, I'd either make them immortal or only have them need feeding after say an hour - both for gameplay reasons as pein said and also because parrots can live longer than sixty years in real life!

How about a perch you can build out of, say, tied short  shaft + short shaft. You have to feed a wild parrot to pick it up, and once you're holding it it can learn the. First phrase you say. Then if you put it down on the perch it will sit there and occasionally repeat its phrase. Feeding it again allows it to be picked up and taught a second phrase, and it would cycle through them randomly.

#9 Re: Main Forum » Two out of eight kids were leavers, unplayable trend » 2019-01-11 14:33:59

The trouble with disincentivising /die is people will just run off into the wilds to starve instead, which I find even more annoying as a mother because it's less immediate and could be accidental whereas /die is very obvious.

If saying "curse my baby" reset your fertility cooldown, there would be the risk of people saying it just when the baby dies for any reason. That would penalise people unfairly. Imagine you spawn in as a boy, but your mother needs girls so she doesn't feed you - and then curses you to speed up getting more girls. That would suck pretty hard.

My feeling is that unless and until Jason gives people a way to express a preference on login for what type of person they want to spawn as (m/f, eve/baby) we just kind of have to accept a high infant mortality rate.

#10 Re: Main Forum » Real time in OHOL time » 2019-01-03 20:07:18

Or you can go in the other direction: one real-life hour is a game year. So a real-life day is 24 years, and a year is over 8000. The game has been out for a bit less than a year, around 7400 game years. That's roughly as long as Great Britain has been an island, or there's been agriculture in Egypt. A long time!

#11 Re: Main Forum » Map of Birth Coordinates » 2019-01-01 23:33:10

Very interesting, thanks for this!

Could it be that 'normal' tutorial spawns aren't included in the logs, and these are people who respawned in the tutorial cells as eves after dying there of old age (and maybe some of their children)? That would explain why there were only a tiny number of them.

One interesting thing you could deduce from this is how many people are being sent to Donkey Town - assuming that info isn't in the server logs already.

Nice job on the car!

I was thinking it would be nice to make a railway, since they're so pointless on the main servers. Is there anywhere that one could be useful?

#13 Re: Main Forum » [suggestion] chat tab always opened » 2018-12-30 22:53:21

You can hold down the space bar to 'freeze' the view in place, which would conflict with an always-open chat window. Personally I never use that feature, but personally I don't find pressing enter to open chat is a big deal either and it's the standard in most games (well, not always enter but pressing a key to type is standard) so I don't know if it's much of an issue for the average new player either.

this is gigantic!

The biggest nuke that we have tested has an explosion radius of 6,080 kilometers and the shake wave could be felt 70,300 kilometers away from the source! we would need 1,876,643,333 bombs! or about 2 billion to cover one server!

I think you forgot to convert blast radius to area, by squaring and multiplying by pi. A radius of 6,080 km translates to an area of around 114,000,000 square kilometers, so you'd 'only' need 100,000 bombs to cover a server.

Also I don't know where you got those figures from but 6,000 km is WAY too big a radius for any bomb. Did you mean 6,000 m?

#17 Re: Main Forum » Tarr's breeding machines » 2018-12-17 21:20:47

This is amazing!

To be honest I kind of like the idea of being put in this and seeing how much help I can be to the village just through coordinating people: zoom out as far as practical, ask people to report to me when they find resources or need something, and I'll pass on the info / request to others when they come near. Of course you can do that without being trapped in a box, but there will always be the temptation to get your hands dirty yourself. Being forced to contribute only through speaking seems like an interesting challenge (at least for one lifetime!).

lionon wrote:

One bigger caveat with the current system is that you need to be in the arms of your mother to /die, I don't know why. Sometimes I just type it and wait to be picked up to be able to hit enter... no already 1 year of age? Too late, need to run onto the next icesheet....

It's also annoying from the mother's point of view: if you're travelling while carrying stuff, notice a baby appear behind you, run back, drop your basket/whatever, grab the baby - and it dies. It would be a lot less disruptive if the baby just /died before you did all that.

On the other hand, at least requiring it to be in your hands means it's pretty clear what happens, that the player chose to /die and didn't just starve or something. Maybe that's the reasoning behind it? On the whole I feel like it would be better if they could /die even while not being held though.

Because you can combine two long shafts and two curved shafts, it quadruples the amount you can bring in a single trip - 4, 16, or 24 in bare hands, cart, or cart with tyres. Doesn't help for firewood or butt logs, but if you need lots of kindling or tool handles it can make a really big difference.

Yeah, getting no girls and just knowing the town is about to die sucks.

Someone must have found the note and brought it back, because I just lived a life in that town and the note was there - but still being decried as blasphemy and moved out/back in by rival worshippers of the goose and milk. A huge room has been built to the west of the goose shrine and part of the wall painted blue, I assume with the paint you made Solbusaur.

No, but in real life people don't reproduce asexually either. There's a balance between realism and what makes for good gameplay, so just because something isn't totally realistic doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good idea.

I was Karl Honor, born the only kid in a town of mainly old people. My sister Miracle was born just before our mum hit menopause, and I ran over with a bowl of berries to keep her fed. Right from the start we had a pretty good bond.

We grew up in a town that had pretty much everything it needed, except people. Miracle was the only fertile woman and she had three kids but two ran off or died as infants, and the other was a son. I thought maybe she'd have her own miracle baby at 39 like our mum, but no such luck. RIP our lineage.

Once it was clear there were no kids coming, I had the idea to practice some medicine since I'd never actually healed anyone of a wound. Sis was down, so we made a bunch of sterile pads and needles. The plan was she would stab me then heal me, and I would do the same for her, before we both hit sixty. Seemed perfect, except...

We both forgot about the post-murder slowdown! So she stabbed me, then just stood there with blood all over her knife, unable to drop it or reach for the bowl of pads right between us. My nephew had let himself starve when he realised the town was doomed, so that was it. I have to admit, it was probably the funniest thing I've had happen to me in OHOL so far.

So if you're reading this sis, no hard feelings. Who knows, maybe I'll get to accidentally murder you back in another life.
