You need to be running both the server & the client for it to work.
The client is set up to attempt to connect to your own PC as the server.

I put this up really hastily, I'll look into it during the weekend, giving better instructions for getting it running.
Might be able to leave the default setting to connect to my linode and host a tiny server there as it's been idling for months - instead of expecting those curious to run their own local host.

Some of you might remember that I was making a mod a good while back and then disappeared.

So yeah, this is the state I left it in - have fun!

This runs on v81 client & server & a v68 editor if I'm not mistaken.
Client + Editor (Windows):
https://github.com/TyrantNomad/OHOL-Leg … ifications

Server Stuff (Windows):
https://github.com/TyrantNomad/OHOL-Leg … ons-Server (this one was still uploading when I posted so wait a bit)

AFAIK this contains:
Revamp of basic harvesting & crafting up to forged tools
You can't actually get to steel
Revamp of forging & pie-making
Revamp of decaying, food & some other stuff
Beating seals to death by clubbing them repeatedly
Broken roast system (sad this one didn't work out)
Weird god character inaccessible through conventional means (which I might have left on as the default avatar)

Stones might be broken - not sure I fixed that one.
Also other broken stuff, for sure.
But hopefully some of it is fun?

No - that's not what the thread is for. Which would be easy to notice if you had:
a - bothered to actually pay attention to the thread
b - bothered to check the thread author's post history

The thread is for reporting means by which you have SUFFERED griefing - and tracking how griefers act as a means of possibly learning to deal with it or propose sensible game changes.

You might think this interpretation is subjective if you didn't read the first line of the first post in the thread - or any other lines in any other posts in this thread, for that matter - it goes like this:
"Please submit examples of people who have griefed you, your town, or others."
Yes, very subtle - very nuanced. I can clearly see how you've completely mistaken the point of the thread.

Instead you've once again approached this matter with your position already formed and refusing to absorb any external information or change your stance. You glanced at the thread, decided it was a "troll school" of some sort (which it wasn't).

...and then out of sheer ignorance you've turned the thread into the "troll school" you yourself supposedly got outraged at.
Congratulations, what an amazing job - most impressive.

What's the consensus on how long a child should wait before jumping into a role?

Should it be when the child can eat on their own? Actually, I'm unsure if this child can be breastfed. Can they? And if yes, what's more beneficial? Should the child remain by mother to be breast fed until it reaches a certain age (what's that age?)?

Basically, I never know how long I should remain by a fire before I feel like I'm a burden for just hanging around.

I once had someone feed me like twice and then tell me I was too old for milk. I could still drink breast milk but she was technically right. I was able to eat berries from a nearby bush she showed me. It was the earliest anyone encouraged me to do so.

(I wish I hadn't done something stupid and died of starvation before I learned more about the game from this wise person. Still shake my head at my mistake there).

If there's a dedicated mom and a slow fire, you should hang around the fire as long as you can.
You can also take short walks close to the fire still just to scout out the village a little and plan what you're gonna do.

#5 Re: Main Forum » The problem of the one carrot rule! » 2018-03-05 14:17:37

Saying that it's a terrible idea is not enough - you need something to replace it with.

I've succeeded in replacing 1-carroters with secret-gardeners in most of my village rebirths.
I'll continue to spread secret gardens as the better solution as its built not around everyone knowing it & following correctly, but on the basis that every so often people, or at least a few, just won't.

Sometimes, people are too eager to work and I don't like it.

In a flourishing village where a fire is kept well, I would prefer those clothes-less children stay near fire to slow hunger and prevent from over-eating.  Further, a child won't run fast until 12 anyway so he/she would be less of a burden when that village already has a dedicated water-carry, a farmer, and a rabbit-killer.

I am looking forward for anyone to provide breast-milking stat and see if it's a one to one conversion or less effective.

I think breastfeeding is roughly 1:4 - but that's assuming that the kid has 4 empty bars and you're picking it up at the right time.
Kids actually have smaller food limits I think - and I mean that their food squares are worth less, a single berry fills'em up.

#7 Re: Main Forum » A warning regarding self-cannibalization » 2018-03-05 06:13:25

I'd like to add that I don't think you can shoot people from offscreen - and that you can actually dodge arrows.
I've had a PvP fight knife vs arrow - the attacking player shot me and the arrow landed on the ground, giving me the upper hand.

So if you are not standing still, you can easily make them waste the arrow and just pick it up yourself, even.

Always be wary when near people with loaded bows or knives in hand - there's a reason you need to manually load the bow every time you drop it.

I have a few roles listed in this post:
https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewt … d=869#p869

It's kinda just listing what people already end up doing and you'll often switch between roles.

Looks like it's only a few people doing it at this point - not really worthy of a full-time position.
I personally think that all steel-age villages should have a knife either way - but a single bow can also fix it.

But it would be better if we were able to knock them out and tie them up or something, so they don't just respawn somewhere.
They'd have to sit there and watch their character grow old tied up, while the villagers feed them every so often.

#10 Re: Main Forum » Wolves? When/who do they kill? » 2018-03-05 02:32:36

Wolves seem to move randomly, I don't think they're aggressive - if they bump into you, you die instantly.

So if you're going into remote lands where wolves weren't cleared... you're just doing a dice-roll for wolf-bumping for each screen you move.

THE VILLAGE PEOPLE (what can I do in a village?)

(this is so you can kinda tell what needs to be done - you don't need to stick to a single role)

SIMPLE ROLES (the 'I don't know what to do' roles)
  • THE GATHERER - requires: a basket
Basic beginner role, if you don't know what to do, grab a basket and get berries and resources from a few screens away.

  • THE BASKET BASTARD - requires: a sharp stone
Villages always need more baskets, go off on your own, don't die, bring back baskets.

  • THE ORGANIZER - requires: knowing what goes where
If the village has enough basket, you can spend years moving things to the right place.

  • THE PRIMITIVE RUNNER - requires: a basket or a dry clay bowl
The primitive runner runs to nearby biomes and brings back specific things - water, fertile soil & seeds.

  • THE 'OH I KNOW HOW TO MAKE SOME STUFF' - requires: game knowledge
This role is responsible for making the basic tools for fire, hunting and pottery.

BASIC ROLES (once you've actually started a settlement - most roles are split)
  • THE FARMER WATERGETTER - requires: tilled rows, seeds & water pouches
Farmers are responsible for taking care of the farm, mostly maintaining seeding rows or SECRET GARDENS.
A developing settlement needs carrots & milkweed.

  • THE HUNTER CLOTHIER - requires: hunting tools and backpack, if possible
The core aggregators of value during this phase - they run off and bring back materials for clothing and skewers.
Hunters should also be the ones crafting clothes at the start of a settlement.

  • THE FIREMAKER SKEWERPERSON - requires: firemaking tools
The firemaker is responsible for maintaining a fire for raising children, cooking skewers & base organization.

  • THE GATHERING CRAFTSPERSON - requires: lots of knowledge and hopefully a backpack
The craftsperson is responsible for managing & collecting the necessary resources for advancing the settlement.
This is a more generalized, split role, until you reach blacksmithing.

SETTLEMENT ROLES (for when you spawn somewhere and go 'oh this place looks neat')
  • THE ACTUAL FARMER - requires: loads of baskets, all types of seeds, farming knowledge
In a larger base, the farmer is responsible for managing all the farm-based resources and seeds & commanding watergetters.

  • THE DEDICATED WATERGETTER requires: at least 3 pouches & basket, hopefully 7 and a backpack
The dedicated watergetter is responsible for keeping water pouches always full & making sure that no ponds are dry.

  • THE BLACKSMITH - requires: a forge, game knowledge
The blacksmith is responsible for managing the production of steel tools.
The smith will probably be the one to manage the kiln to make charcoal & collect smithing materials.

  • THE SCAVENGER - requires: basket & backpack, survival knowledge
The scavenger is a specialized gatherer, going on long journeys looking for specific things that accelerate development.
The scavenger communicates with the village & assists all other roles.

  • THE KNOWLEDGEABLE MOM - requires: lots of game knowledge, a slow fire
The mom is the village's baby-raiser - teaching players who have just spawned as they grow.
As the village should not be constantly spawning babies, it's advised that the mom also does basic cooking & base organizing.

  • THE BUILDER - requires: basket & backpack, one sharp stone per wetland
The builder will plan & build the village's more permanent structures.
To accomplish this, they must walk into the wetlands, collect 7 clay, combine 7 adobe on the spot and return to town.

VILLAGE ROLES (for when you spawn somewhere and go 'holy shit look at this stuff')

(not done, please suggest & describe roles from steel age+ for villages making carts and roads)

DE TRI OF KNOLEJ (sav som karacters for yungr folk)

We should probably centralize knowledge in a single thread, I'm suggesting that this be it.

Babbies can easily tell people that they share this knowledge by typing "T - O - K"

LAWS OF THE LAND (by order of importance)
THE FOUR LAWS by brianj
  1. FRUITING MILKWEED IS FOR PICKING, other milkweed is for leaving.
If you pick FRUITING MILKWEED, not only can you get seeds - but it will also regrow.

  2. DON'T EMPTY THE PONDS, add water back to those that are dry.
Water ponds will naturally refill as long as they're not completely empty.

  3. ONLY HUNT FAMILY ANIMALS, lest your babies not have their babies to hunt.
Family animals respawn - lone animals don't. They're gone. Forever.

  4. DON'T PLANT DOMESTIC BERRY BUSHES, they dry the land & feed few.
Farming berry bushes is slow & wastes fertile soil, don't do it unless you can compost.

THE SEVEN TENETS by colinmarc
  1. LIVE LIGHT UPON THE LAND
Try to minimize any impact you have on natural resources, don't be wasteful.

  2. IF THE LAND IS DEAD, LEAVE IT
Many settlements have completely extinguished resources, take what you can and move to greener pastures.

  3. ONLY THE FARMER EATS FROM THE DIRT
Eat off the food storage - don't eat directly from farms or bakeries lest you disturb their working.

  4. A TOOL, LIKE A CHILD, NEEDS A HOME
Keep the tools in their respective work areas, if you take a tool you must put it back.

  5. ONE MOTHER, ONE DAUGHTER
The food can't feed many, raise & keep one daughter. Sons you may keep, should the food be plentiful.

  6. CLOTHE YOURSELF AND YOUR KIN, THROW BABBIES TO THE FIRE (sorry, colin)
The warmer you are, the less food you need; clothe yourselves, raise babies by the fireside.

  7. A CHILD MUST BE BORN WITH THE TENETS WIF DE SID OF KNOLEJ (sorry again)
When a child is born, ask "DO U SHAR DE KNOLEJ?", if it says "T - O - K" it already knows.
If it doesn't, you may only raise it if you teach it.

THE TIPS OF TYRANNY by TyrantNomad
  1. LEAVE WITHOUT BASKET - RETURN WITH, for baskets are essential for civilization.
If you are unable to leave without a basket, craft one while you're out and bring it back later.

  2. THE DOOMED CONFUSE THE MASSES, let not a dead village look alive and tempting.
Take away everything that doomed settlements have so players don't waste time on them.

  3. POPPING IS FOR CORN - NOT BABIES, keep population under control - kill those who don't.
A community must maintains a steady number, apply knives and arrows to those who disobey.

  4. DEPEND NOT ON YOUR HOME, and let your home depend on you.
Minimize your upkeep, try to find our own food - don't take away, go away and bring more back.

#15 Re: Main Forum » Please for the love of milkweed keep things organized » 2018-03-04 15:05:23

A good rule of thumb is to always try to leave the village without a basket and come back with one.
If you leave with a basket, try to craft another basket while you're out and then just grab it later.

This really helps you organize the base.

#17 Re: Main Forum » Have you encountered Human Trolls? » 2018-03-04 13:58:34

I have stabbed a lot of babbies, and a few adult players - but I really think it's kind of necessary at some point.
I've had people raising babbies left and right when the carrot farms are empty and dry, and the berry bushes within a 2 minute radius no longer carry a single berry.

Some players feel like it's mean to just kill them or let them die... but you are actually dooming and ruining everyone's work by raising too many goddamn kids.

Haven't really met full-on troll players, though - the bow and arrow are easy enough to craft that you might be able to kill them easily.

Uncle Gus wrote:

To refer back to the title, another reason to forget leaving one carrot to seed is that it takes ten minutes to go to seed. In that time, if you had emptied the plot, you could have grown ten more carrots in that land. See my farming guide thread for the math.

Yeah, leaving one carrot actually wastes a lot of a farm's productivity.
One secret garden is comparable to 4 "last carrots", and even so you'll quickly learn that one secret garden is not even close to what you need to keep 4 plots running at full efficiency.

#19 Re: Main Forum » How many Milkweed Stake does it take? » 2018-03-04 02:07:27

It's actually not hard to find 8 milkweed in virgin lands - the problem is that most people are not settling in fresh lands and instead continue to try to explore the same lands as before after killing them.

Would a "possibility check" hurt the game's performance? E.g. if I'm holding a basket, why does my character even start bumping trees when I click on one? It's an "impossible" action after all. It would make the lag much less annoying.

bahahahah sorry for the caps - but honestly, I've barely been able to enjoy the game in the past two days due to severe server lag and client de-syncs, which saddens me greatly.

We all know "always leave one carrot" only works until the food source starts to collapse.
(that's when the need for seed, most wanted, is at its highest)

So I bring you an alternative to teaching people to leave one carrot and hoping on good faith that no one will desperately eat it.

THE SECRET GARDEN TECHNIQUE

As in, you hide the crops that are supposed to seed.

BAHAAHAHAH
I'M THE SMITH FROM THE FIRST STORY

Jesus Christ, I was so mad - kept telling people to stop raising babies but no, they imploded the place.
The new kids kept stealing my smithing bowls for watering - EVEN THOUGH WE HAD FIVE POUCHES.
And then as I was about to finish everything, someone mistook my smith's hammer for a hatchet.
I found it in a later life among branches.

Initially I was working on tools for the village, but after about 30 minutes of working AGAINST the villagers...
I actually started working on making a knife - in fact I finished the knife later on.
But by that point we had a new generation of villagers and they were all really nice so I never used it.

It's still there, the knife. It's hidden behind a tree. No one has found it yet.

To the people of the village of the horizontal wooden road, where babies are raised on a roadside fire.

Northeast of you lies a great treasure.
At the corner of the wolf-ridden rabbitlands beyond sits the corpse of the Tyrant Nomad, where great riches await.

It is said that the Tyrant died carrying:
-The legendary knife of the Tyrant Nomad, used to keep population under control and accumulate riches from doomed lands.
-A complete set of clothing including a bag filled with said knife and three strings.
-A cart containing two fur shirts & two backpacks
-The first pack contains two fur shorts & two fur shoes
-The second backpack contains one water pouch and...
-THREE MILKWEED SEEDS, THE GREATEST TREASURE OF ALL

To find the Tyrant's treasure, you must start your journey from the dying carrot farm.
Head straight NE, you'll pass the first rabbitlant and smaller rabbitlands.
After the second larger rabbitland, you'll reach a dead outpost with three dead rabbits in a basket.
Head left, back into the rabbitland, and follow its edge until you find the fallen Tyrant.

Multiple players are currently experiencing mild to severe server lag long before the servers reach their capacity.
Under normal circumstances these past days, all servers with about 100+ players suffered from mild lag.

As of right now, the only active server, which currently holds about 70 players, is becoming unplayable due to severe lag.
Actions take multiple times longer than intended -
Metalworking? Forget about it.
Bumped into a tree? That's 5 seconds to grab a leaf.
Following people? Sorry, not gonna happen - everyone transports via 2-screen teleportation.
Feeding a baby and doing something else? - Nope, that's up to 15s to swap between babies and objects.

Clients are also starting to de-sync, which worsens the situation even more.
Those 5 seconds you spent trying to desperately pick up a carrot? It was actually long gone!

Map suddenly updates, moving multiple items on the floor around.
