Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

As cool as this update is you forgot to add copper coil + copper coil = two copper coils in the transition. We can transmit whatever messages we want but no one can hear us.

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

Here's the translation.

RADIO TRANSMISSION, YOU SAY? THAT'S SOME PRETTY HIGH-TECH STUFF, ISN'T IT? THE MOST BASIC FORM OF RADIO TRANSMISSION IS ACTUALLY PRETTY LOW TECH: A FEW BITS OF COIL, A FEW BITS OF FOIL, AND A NESTED VAT OF CHEMICALS THAT HAVE BEEN KNOWN SINCE ANCIENT TIMES <KN>IN ALCHEMICAL TERMS, A BIT OF ROMAN VITRIOL, AND SOME SPIRIT OF VITRIOL), AND AWAY YOU GO. YES, IT'S NOISY AND BROAD-BAND, ALMOST LIKE THE RADIO EQUIVALENT OF FISHING IN A POND WITH A STICK OF DYNAMITE, BUT IT GETS THE JOB DONE, AND IT WAS THE STANDARD METHOD OF TRANSMISSION FOR ABOUT THIRTY SOLID YEARS <KN>FAMOUSLY USED TO ISSUE THE DISTRESS CALLS FROM THE SINKING TITANIC). WHAT'S SOMEWHAT AMAZING IS HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR PEOPLE TO DISCOVER, GIVEN HOW SIMPLE IT IS. WHAT'S EVEN MORE AMAZING IS HOW CLOSE TO MAGIC IT IS, GIVEN HOW SIMPLE IT IS. INVISIBLE MESSAGES IN THE SKY, MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE SPECIFIC ARRANGEMENT OF PRIMITIVE ELEMENTS BASED ON ARCANE KNOWLEDGE, AND DOCUMENTED THROUGH STRANGE DIAGRAMS. IN TERMS OF THE SHEER NUMBER OF OBJECTS ADDED, THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST UPDATES IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME SO FAR. I GUESS THAT MAKES RADIO PRETTY COMPLICATED, RELATIVELY SPEAKING. HOWEVER, WHEN I TOLD MY 15 YEAR OLD SON MEZ ABOUT THE CONTENT IN THE UPDATE, AND THE WAY THAT IT WOULD WORK, HE SAID, "YET ANOTHER BIG UPDATE FULL OF USELESS TECHNOLOGY! HOW ARE PEOPLE EVEN GOING TO MAKE USE OF THIS, BY LEARNING MORSE CODE?" BUT GIVEN THE COURSE OF HUMAN HISTORY, IT SEEMS STRANGE TO ME TO CALL TELEGRAPHY USELESS. WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT? JASON

I love how Jason's son came to the same conclusion as most of the community.

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

This does open space for better radios in the future tbh.

To me copper and glass are the big stars here, two resources that have been asked for a long time, hopefully we get other uses for them.

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

I don’t know if there is a “proper” way to use this. It is a way to turn a light on and off remotely, but lag will probably make Morse code difficult. You could have an agreement between two villages like “if the light is on we are out of iron” or “blink the light if we should ring the bell tower” but if you can manage the outside communication then why not use that instead?

I think it is more of a novelty in its current form, but I am really looking forward to what new technology it brings.

Update: BTW this really is a massive update. Over 130 new objects! With resources like copper, glass, sand, zinc and salt peter added it opens up so many possibilities.

The best part is that it only takes 20 years of your life to send and recieve one message in morse!

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

I don't think people are going to learn morse code just to use this. People will probably just make up their own simple code to use.

I'm not complaining, this update is amazing! I wonder what cool things we will teach ourselves to use this device for. And the oh-so-many new natural recourses opens up many opportunities and makes the future of this game brighter.

Hahaha, this.

Just wondering IRL, has radiotelegraphy ever been a thing? I know the SOS code was used in marine. But other than that, I got the idea that telegraphy was a thing for wire. And then they figured out the phone, one wire, and when they figured out radio waves, amplitude modulation was very quickly added to this for voice over radio. At least my idea without researching on this topic...

Radio telegraphy was used quite extensively during the early days of radio, mostly for ships at sea; it's easier to get beeps through than clear voice communications sometimes, especially with early radios. And of course ships can't easily drag cables behind themselves to keep a telegraph line open.

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

Expecting everyone to learn Morse code is unreasonable. Having the device output speech bubbles when receiving would be great. Or how about letting us know which direction and how far the other waves come from like an always on bell between cities. Hopefully you plan to make it more useful and are just trolling us.

Hopefully the next update is just as large but with useful items. Even basic things that grow the tree out instead of up. I want to live a life in that room that's in the first screenshot of the video on your homepage. Stop trying to find ways to end our already short lives and waste them fetching iron. We just want a ridiculous amount of content.

You should listen to your son, he sounds like a smart kid!

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

Neat, but gameplay-wise definitely useless. What good is long distance communication when your life is too short to ever meet the people you're communicating with?

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

Everyone here is whining about having to LEARN morse code. BUT! you can just have international morse code on a picture, whether it be on a different tab or on your phone (preferably phone), and just translate it from there. eventually you'll actually pick it up doing it long enough.

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

EVERYONE! A radio is a component of a metal detector !!!!!!!!!

I know this because of a science project I did with my kids.  You basically tape a calculator to a radio and tune it just right and you have a metal detector.  It was also featured on an episode of curious George.

I love all of my children.  You are wanted and loved.

We don't care about learning Morse code (just use google, no need to learn) we care that the addition to the game is pointless especially when considering the million of other options we could have. Plus two towns building one on the same server, I would love to see that happen...

Re: Update: Radio Telegraphy

you know what would be interesting! That Jason puts random messages in the air on a random server! such as the gods communicating with their creation! Us!

It could be as small as them saying "hi" or as big as what the next update might contain! or even better, yet hidden tools or technology, such as a glass cups or tables, that can't be found in the tech tree until they have been crafted! of course you can find them out with experimenting but building a radio to find these things out would be fun!

also what it looks like we are close getting pianos as they require coper to make! and as cruel as this might sound we already have the rest of the parts for a piano, wood for the frame, coper or wire for the strings and finally, because we don't have elephants to hunt, bones form pigs and sheep for keys! early pianos used ivory, which is just bone and because we don't have elephants and don't want to support their extinction we use the bones of our animals, and or humans!

so we can make music! and with that music transmit it through our radios! only problem is that it will only come out in morse code... so it will all sound the same.

and we can learn how to make a piano with my idea I preposed before! we make a receiver to learn how to make the piano in one of the messages it receives! and once crafted you can see the recipe on one tech!
