#126 Re: Main Forum » Make Lassos Great Again! » 2018-06-03 20:47:48

Yeah, it is kind of weird you can't use a lasso on sheep. If you can tie a rope around their neck, why can't you use a lasso? A lasso should work just like a rope in the cases of capturing animals and stuff. And if you can lasso a baby, why can't you lasso an adult sheep?

#127 Re: Main Forum » Confessions of a carrot plebe » 2018-06-03 20:45:35

When it comes to smiting, you can always do prep work. If you are not sure what tools to make, or don't need any, make a bunch of ingots. My main priority is always composting, since if you have compost up and running you are in a much better shape. Included in that, is you need a knife to butcher the extra sheep while composting. If you got compost going, and you got the sheep meat coming, then next I would focus on meat pies.

If you are composting and got meat pies going, then you should be in good shape. You are at the pinnacle of civilization. At that point you can increase the production of composting, or other productions, or build walls and floors, or bell towers and signs or whatever.

The soil changes are a little weird still to me. It seems like you spend a LOT more time dragging around soil basket by basket.

I suppose it might be easier to build a farm near a bunch of soil pits, then run for the water. Water is easier to transports if you get to buckets.

#129 Re: Main Forum » Should I get this game? » 2018-06-01 20:59:05

I would get the game but go in with the understanding that it is similar to buying a game as an early access. Things change a lot, and is expanding often. It is entirely playable and fun in the current state though. Also you play the game in one hour chunks, and each life is self contained. So there is no issue with playing a few lives, then taking time off and coming back later and playing a few games. It isn't really the type of game you play for 60 hours in a few weeks, then never play again. There is a lot of people who don't like an update so quit playing for a few weeks then come back and start playing again when they see something interesting that was added.

#130 Re: Main Forum » how can i make the Baby Experience more comfortable for YOU? » 2018-06-01 20:19:00

One thing to keep in mind is that the game can take 5-10 seconds to load for some people. So they might not see anything you say or do within that period of time.

#131 Re: Main Forum » Rose seeds » 2018-06-01 20:09:56

You have to leave the rose seeds on the ground for an hour for them to change colors. That is why they are all laying around, because someone is trying to make them change color. And of course since it takes an hour, whoever originally put them there will die before they change color, so it is up future generations to finish the job of making roses.

It is true, you probably shouldn't lay them out in the middle of town though.

#132 Re: Main Forum » Balancing corn against other foods. Via popcorn, a corn plant used to… » 2018-06-01 19:50:14

Honestly, having a lot of different crops makes farming far more interesting. Most people don't want to live their entire life as a carrot farmer, but I am thinking most people will be okay with being a farmer if you had like 5 or 6 different crops.

#133 Re: Main Forum » My take on the new Corn update. » 2018-06-01 08:15:44

I was in a town that was a complete and horrible disorganized mess, but everyone seemed to be doing okay. Everyone did seem more relaxed and there was plenty of popcorn, and many bushes to keep everyone fed. Didn't need 20 rows of carrots, just 4 rows of corn at a time was fine. While letting it dry out plant some more and snack on some berries when you need to.

#134 Re: News » Update: Small Farm » 2018-06-01 08:08:08

Fertile soil gives 10 soil, then you can use shove to dig it up and get 9 more. So that is 19 soil from a single pit. So there is enough time to get things set up for composting, which now gives 8 per.

#135 Re: Main Forum » Corn??? » 2018-06-01 07:03:55

As much as people loved the idea of berry farming, you never could take it too seriously with an hour grow time. Now with an eight minute grow time, berry farming is definitely possible. In fact, I am not opposed to the idea of making a a farm of bushes as far as the eye can see, if you got enough water.

#136 Re: Main Forum » % chance to use well might not be good plan? » 2018-06-01 06:47:52

Yeah that is true, a big oversight there. In this case it seems like wells or ponds are better off just having a set number of uses.

#137 Re: Main Forum » Check if these numbers make sense » 2018-05-31 18:38:28

If there are changes to make soil more available, then I think that helps a lot. If there is more soil around, or it is easier to get, people will grow more stuff which uses more water. Which I think it is a good thing to have the focus more on water scarcity than soil scarcity. If you start to run out of water then you have to prioritize what to grow and what not to grow or perhaps go looking for more water. Since water does come back though, you have a decline in civilization and things become a lot harder. In the case you run out of soil, it is an instant, all or nothing collapse. You run out of soil, since it doesn't come back, that is it, your town is done. Nearly all food and tools requires it so your pretty much wiped out.

So yeah, I like putting the constraints on water more than soil. If your town of 20 people hits water issues, maybe you lose half the population, but you can potentially come back from it if you manage the crisis. The city may collapse, but there is hope. If your have a town of 20 runs out of soil, even briefly, you pretty much have to abandon the city and find a new area, there is no hope.

#138 Re: Main Forum » New Players Are Getting Left Behind » 2018-05-31 16:47:56

Overpopulation isn't really the issue, rather it is people not working together. A single person can easily feed four other people. So if you have a quarter of your population working on food production, you will be fine. As long as you keep expanding your food production, and keep putting more people towards it, your population can continue to grow.

The problem is when people don't plan for their children, or make big mistakes because they are new(or griefing on purpose), or too many people are goofing off. If you are doing pure food production, you can easily feed everyone else but if you have to stop to make a plow, or make a knife to cut up sheep or something, that will slow you down greatly.

#139 Re: Main Forum » Check if these numbers make sense » 2018-05-31 08:08:48

I actually mentioned this a while back when carrots were getting nerfed hard, that people should probably start moving to full time ranching for food. Composting changes with dung made that more true. Now I think that is truer than ever, you have to rush sheep as soon as possible so you can compost. You need to compost like crazy, that is the only way you can get all this soil you need for everything.

On the bright side, in the mad dash to compost like crazy, you can get a ton of sheep meat.

#140 Re: Main Forum » ohol is a fun game » 2018-05-31 05:17:12

Personally, I take the view that as long as you put in more than you take, you can do whatever you want. You can easily spend a third to half your life goofing off in game and still contribute more than you take, so people hanging out and chatting isn't a big issue to me.

They are not supposed to destroy the items, just throw them on the ground. If they actually get destroyed, then I think that is a bug.

#142 Re: Main Forum » Check if these numbers make sense » 2018-05-31 05:07:01

Backpacks should decay in 5 hours, like all the fur clothing and stuff does. Currently it decays in only 2 hours for some reason. It is how Jason wanted the game though, so it isn't a bug.

#143 Re: Main Forum » Rate of Starvation is rediculous » 2018-05-31 04:55:05

It isn't really a bug, just a technical detail that it is slow to load the first time. You actually appear in game instantly, so your standing there doing nothing for 5-10 seconds while it loads.

#144 Re: Main Forum » Check if these numbers make sense » 2018-05-31 04:49:28

Well wool clothing doesn't take milkweed, so there is hope in that regard. I do agree that paying two soil for a some pants, or a hat is pretty crazy. Which now that I mention it, it is odd there are no wool pants, are we doom to have no pants forever now? I think backpacks are still worth it though. A backpack is probably worth it no matter how expensive it is to make.

Cistern is trash... It has to be cheaper than a well to not just be a bad play.

Yeah but if they change it so wells have to go on ponds and a cistern can go any where, that changes the entire equation. If you want to farm some where that isn't a swamp, then you have to build one.

This. Since milkweed can no longer be farmed, mass transportation of water (both buckets and carts requiring rope) seems unreasonable.

You can still farm milkweed, it is just crazy expensive. Four soil to make a rope is nuts.

#147 Re: Main Forum » Ruins? Accident or feature? » 2018-05-31 04:19:35

There is some system where areas not visited in a certain period of time get wiped out and everything respawns back to a natural setting. So it is possible someone ran by the town at the max range or whatever, and half the town got wiped out by the respawning mechanic.

I sure there are hundreds if not thousands of ways to carry babies around. It is just a matter of picking one.

I made the suggestion before that Eves should be born a bit younger, so they could have a few minutes to set something up before having children and it got the most likes of any suggestion ever, but was totally ignored. Seriously it had like 60 up votes on the Reddit suggestion area, nothing gets that many.

I agree though, it is especially annoying to have children before the game even finishes loading. Giving us a little more time seems fair, since it doesn't actually give you any advantages, you still have to work to survive, you are just not stuck with a child to feed instantly.

Spawning an Eve with rags clothing(which will decay in half an hour), also seems pretty reasonable. Why not do something like that? I wouldn't say that is unfair and doesn't really help a lot. It just takes the edge off a little.
