What if you want to die but someone has you in a prison like setting? They're force feeding you to keep you alive but you no longer want to continue that life? Are you going to have to wait out an entire real life hour to play again? I think suicide should be an option. Besides we don't really jail griefers.. we just kill and curse them right? We don't really have the means to entrap a griefer and force feed them anyway. /Die is excellent for babies and the two minute timer for slower computers is great... I still don't like the idea that it would be possible for someone to keep you hostage for an hour. This would be considered "disruptive behavior" and is perma-ban worthy in other online games. I think we should have the option to choose between continuing a life and moving on to the next even in a prison setting. I'd rather a 'terminate' button be added to the game as a feature than being part of a mod. Like.. instead of "press % to quit" which effectively is only a Disconnect. There could be a 2nd hotkey to 'terminate' your life.

Some people only play a few hours a day, it would be extremely annoying to find out they've been born into a prison and are being force fed for an entire hour. If given the mechanics to do it i'm sure griefers would attempt a prison like this just for the sake of trolling.

btw, i'm totally fine with jason's decision to remove the shift+del awbz "feature/exploit," whatever your terminology. It IS his decision to make afterall as owner of the server and creator of the game. It was very convenient though, have to say i used it almost impulsively instead of /die because it had its own hotkey. It would be nice if /die had a hotkey too though.

1 keystroke > 5 keystroke. Who even uses more than one finger on a keyboard at a time anyway...

I use to have something similar, however the repercussions on my life were severe. That's another topic of its own.

Lol ye, but if nature calls I'm not gonna ignore it. Its generally not a good idea to hold it in. To be honest people really shouldn't prioritize video games over real life. It would just be really nice for short breaks to be possible though. The time scale in this game is actually pretty unforgiving for us who live in a world 525,600 times slower, if it was perfectly detailed to replicate human life at an exact 1/525,600th scale it would be impossible to play.

Its kind of amazing that we can fit a whole life into one hour though, the amount of detail ignored is astonishing. Like... an average person goes to the bathroom between 6-7 times a day. That's 131,400 to 153,300 times in 60 years. Imagine doing that in one hour.

Back when desert borders was a thing i used them to go to the bathroom, both number 1 and number 2. Can't do that anymore. sad If i had to go away for longer than 6 minutes well... I'd just accept my death and move on. I have seen players feed an afk player before though.

If you think about it, a three year old only has like 7-8 pips, they would get an entire 8 seconds out of adding a second per pip at the bottom. Idk about you but i usually start playing at age 3, i don't wait till i'm an adult to go off exploring. Usually getting clothes is my first priority, 8 seconds more seconds between eating would be a godsend. It would also mean adding 5 seconds between each berry consumed. This would help immensely for villages that have fewer wild berries. It would be especially helpful to an eve's children.

You could animate doors so that when someone is pathing through a door way it opens right before they walk through it and remains open until nobody else is pathing through it. It then closes with zero players pathing through it. This would also eliminate doors flapping in the wind if they were to open and close every time a player walked through it.

Big rooms don't suddenly lose all heat when a single person opens and closes a door, in this way i think the game is lacking detail. This is the reason doors exist in the first place, so the room minimalizes heat loss when people are going in and out. If the door remained open for a considerable amount of time, and maybe there was a breeze, you could expect it to start getting colder. (or warmer in the opposite case.)

You could make "room airspace" slowly degrade to biome temp when a door is manually left open. Manually closing door would then gradually change heat to its optimal temperature (fire + insulation).

I counted in my head the time it took to load the first time and it was 40 seconds, the start of the loading bar and end of the loading bar were slow but there was a big jump in the middle. It was the first time i had booted up the game today since turning on my laptop. The rest of the times the game loaded in instantly. It was also a big town.

I have zero problem surviving alone. Its the interaction with surviving inside a town that's difficult. Its hard to survive when the food is all eaten within a two biome radius. I do consider myself a semi-skilled player.

It actually stems from my inability to articulate speech due to being extremely introverted. It takes me a long time to make my thoughts and words intelligible and cohesive to other people. If i wrote everything unfiltered it wouldn't make any sense. Also i use to get really good grades on my essays in english class. The problem wasn't the quality, it was the time it took me to achieve that quality. Its very annoying to me to have to write something that is outside of my own thought process. Like when asked to write an essay about a topic i have no knowledge of. Its super stressful to me. I hate paperwork, its stressful. Its like for people who are bad at math they just HATE doing it. It was only $20 worth of work but it took me 6-7 hours longer to do. We actually had to meet up a 2nd day to finish it because we ran out of time the first day. I lost sleep that night thinking about the resume. I took about 4 more hours at night to fix what i had written and do some formatting.

The guy only came to me because he needed someone familiar with computers because he was applying for a job online. Not because i was qualified to write a resume. He did say to me after it all was done that it was the best resume and coverletter he ever had.

I am an adult american but don't have an actual job. Lets not talk about it.

it never was that to me. It's enjoyable and exhilarating, but this is a pretty frantic and stressful game, by it's nature, that's what makes it so rewarding. Still, it's plenty easy to have a pretty laid back life working as a baker or whatever.


Me, being me, I either focus on one thing to the detriment of seeing other problems in the community or run all over like a crazy person trying to solve all the problems but not doing enough to fix any of them.

I've only been around for a few weeks but before the update i did have fun, a lot of it. The game was stressful already just by having such a steep learning curve, however i could still explore the game without being too harshly punished. It did also feel rewarding to learn something new or accomplish a step in new technology. Like building a sheep pen for the first time, or finishing an atmospheric chamber for a newcomen pump. Now i can only play about one life before getting too stressed out to keep playing. Its not really the update that gets me though. Its the endless problem of overpopulation that is ruining villages, which is a result of the biome nerfs. I just don't find it as fun anymore when i have to struggle against not just the game but the ever consuming hoard of reincarnating mouths with hands. I spent 8 hours writing some dudes resume for him because he was bad with computers so i could buy this game -- which was the first time a I ever wrote a resume -- bless him. I'm a really slow writer btw, I have to do a ton of editting. It was stressful for me but it doesn't even compare to trying to manage an overpopulated village, which is the only experience i get now from playing this game. If a village isn't overpopulated it will be in a few generations and boy does it crash. (edit: Eve runs for me are a bit pointless, i never find the things i need to start a village in time.)

I know some of you are probably sick of hearing me complain but I just want to have fun playing this amazing game. I like fun but this ain't it chief.

By the way there is data for deaths in list format for each server... but how do you analyze/compute it? I'm not keen on processing data especially in shorthand list format. I could brute force it but i have suspicion that you don't do it by hand, but if you do that's pretty amazing. I would die of old age before i finished that kind of work. I would like a comparison of percent of deaths that were murders and total number of murders a in a week before and after the update. How would you do that?

Comparing your old pie chart to your new pie chart based on percent of the population...
17.47% Died to disconnects (old) and new: 26.28% of deaths are disconnects.
Another observation is murder rate is much lower, 4.23% then as compared to 0.99% now. People must be a lot less bored now that everyone is starving. I would like an in game murderers perspective of how often they murder now as compared to before the update and if their playstyle has changed. Perhaps it was just a good day.

Another thing to note is the quantity of deaths in your first data set and the current one. Is this just because there are more players now?
If we could compare how many of those deaths were early deaths 0 sudden infant death, 0-2 child starving, and 3-15 early life.
I think its possible that the greater number of deaths correlates to the harder early life for naked & eve players.

You could always make wooden boxes to store materials inside and outside the bakery. Baskets do decay but people need them to carry stuff, especially with handcarts they need 4-6 depending if they have rubber tires or not. Each wooden box holds 4 items but they do not decay and are far more effective than baskets, and if you did have extra baskets you could store pies in baskets in crates for up to 12 storage. I really hate that baskets decay though. Wild reeds and wheat don't grow back so at some point you have to use straw for baskets which takes 4 soil, not including the cost of composting.

You've mentioned something that has piqued my interest, destiny. The cycle of death. To me its a bit like a growing swarm of locusts that eat everything in their path. As one group of players starve out in one village they spawn into another village. The chain of famine continues endlessly. Perhaps its a sign that the game needs more balancing.

You'd have to get lucky and spawn near another village and happen to just stumble into them. The alternative is preparing for a long journey and setting out to find one. It all depends on luck. I found a big town once as an eve. Sadly i disconnected about a minute later and couldn't reconnect.
I would imagine with how many towns die out from starvation its possible that we might start finding more ruins than before.

I don't think a blessing system is necessary. I think simply making eve towns a little more survivable would cut down on the unfathomable amount of overpopulated towns because there would be more of them. Less people in one spot is better for everyone. I personally suck at eve runs and i can imagine new players are utterly helpless in these situations. So there's not a lot of good towns popping up everywhere. Deserts used to be a haven that magically reduced the food requirements of the village so there were a lot of really goods spots that are now really bad. "Perfect spots" are harder to come by now.

Simply put we need leaders to keep people coordinated. You don't need to control them, just guide them. Watch over the village and let people know when there is a problem, or rather a lack of vital tools or resources.

If the fertile women in the village are left to have every child then the village WILL starve. This is why places like china (one of the most overpopulated places in the world) lets you only keep your first two children by LAW. We also need to make sure that we have a competent player handling sheep and the newer players making compost rather than just eating berries. In the mean time for starter villages we need our vets managing the higher technology such as making newcomen pumps and cisterns.

When your village has sufficient compost start making milkweed for ropes! These are needed for buckets, handcarts, and a ton of other tools!

You can't possibly coordinate 50 people in one village. This also reduces the life of your steel tools. Eventually something is going to run out and there isn't going to be much time to react to it. If you run out of kindling, ropes, and axes/hatchets all at the same time you're going to have an awfully bad time trying to cook pies and blacksmith. Make sure people know what the village needs and find someone who knows how to do it.

Don't keep each and every baby. Keep girl count reasonable. Too low and the generation may die. Too many and overpopulation is exponential.
Keeping sons isn't so dangerous because they don't produce more kids, this is a double edged sword. They are less of a risk of overpopulation but they also risk under population if the pop is all male.  They also eat food like all babies do and food costs iron, stones, or skewers as the cost of hoes.
A likely strategy is to send your boys out into the wild to gather iron and other materials and keep an eye on the girls inside town. Yet again i cannot stress this enough. Do not keep every child.

Keep small villages under a population of 10-15. Its not a magical number, its just a good one. If you do find a magical number report it to your nearest ministry of wizardry. Long distance gatherers equipped with backpacks can survive off wild food and pies so make sure you inform them of what the town needs before they head out. Iron is one of the big ones.

Going into the jungle naked is the same as being in the cold naked, however you lose the transition period between nuetral warm -> hot. This transition area is better for hunger. Being naked is bad all around even in jungle... Lets say you're warm and walk into a jungle naked... you don't get nearly as long of a transition time between warm->hot as you do when clothed.

Certainly the risk of overheating is there, but you don't want to stay in a jungle all day do you? Just get your bananas and run.

If you want to stay in the jungle longer than 20 seconds then yea go naked. But seriously?? Why would you want to stay in a jungle if you could stand outside it with clothes. Even for rubber just run in, cut a latex tree place a bucket and get out. Come back in a minute and run out with latex.
Being naked is exponentially worse for hunger than being clothed.

This is a guide to help people who are having trouble learning how to live inside a village with the new update. Villages use to be an easier place to learn the game. However, the chaos created by the temperature update has left villages in a constant cycle of starvation. It is my hope that someone finds this guide and learns how to maintain the basic necessities of a town.

Resources consumed by a sustainable farm: Iron for tools(breakable), kindling to make charcoal(fuel for water pump).
A sustainable farms produces its own water with newcomen pumps and soil through composting.

Important jobs:
Farmer See composter and sheep tender below, you can't farm without soil and water!

Water sources: (note: found in swamp biome only)
-Canada goose pond: Use bowl to collect water. An empty pond can be combined with 10 round stones and shovel to make shallow well.
-Shallow well: Use bowl to collect water. A dry shallow well can be turned into a deep well. This requires a stanchion kit. To make a stanchion kit you need two straight branches in a stack, use an adze to make fence kit. Combine fence kit with a bucket to get stanchion kit.
-Deep well: This requires a bucket to collect water. Bring the bucket back to the farm you're watering, use a bowl to collect water from bucket.
-Newcomen pump/kerosene Newcomen pump. See wiki: https://onehouronelife.gamepedia.com/Newcomen_Pump
Add bucket of water and then charcoal to newcomen pump and light with a firebrand. This produces 3 buckets of water, add one bucket of water back to boiler so that you do not run out. Take the remaining 2 buckets of water to the farm or put into a cistern to be used later (holds 10 buckets).
-Cistern: Used to contain buckets of water, does not generate water on its own. See wiki:https://onehouronelife.gamepedia.com/Cistern

Soil sources:
-Fertile soil deposit: Found in grassland biome. Use basket to collect soil, right click to empty basket on ground.
-Wormy Empty Fertile Soil pit: An empty soil pit turns into a wormy pit, use a shovel to get more soil from it. After empty its gone forever.
-Composting: See Compost Maker below. Requires: wheat, carrots, berries, water, sheep, and sheep poop to make new soil.

How to farm:
-Planting new crops: Take a basket and collect soil from a nearby deposit or compost pile. Place the soil where you're going to plant your crop by right-clicking the ground. This makes a pile of 3 soil on the ground. Separate the soil piles into groups of two. This saves soil and hoe durability.
Next find a steel hoe, stone hoe, or skewer. Whichever you can make or find available. Hoe the piles of two soil to get a deep tilled row. Adding any seed to a deep tilled row and watering it with a waterskin or bowl of water produces whatever crop you are growing. Some crops consume two soil per harvest however some crops leave behind a hardened row. Harden rows take 1 soil and a use of hoe to make a deep tilled row.

-Warning: The growing of carrots, cabbage, and green beans is time sensitive. If you are growing carrots or cabbage it is best to leave the seeds dry until you need them. If grown carrots or cabbage are left in the ground they turn into seeds(after 5 minutes of being ripe).Seeding carrots and cabbage disappear entirely if left alone for 10 minutes. When growing carrots always leave one or two rows in the ground, this produces 7 seeds per row and consumes the soil. Seeding cabbages only produce 4 seeds. Beans have two stages: their ripe stage 'green bean plant' which can be harvested for edible green beans and a dry stage after 2 minutes. Dry beans are used for making three sisters stew and used as seeds. Green beans and dry beans can be harvested with a clay bowl. Harvest all but one or two full rows of carrots to be used for sheep and composting and rabbit carrot pies. When your seed carrots and cabbages have turned into seeds harvest them before they disappear. It is always a good idea to leave extra seeds laying around to be replanted in case the last row of carrots is accidentally harvested. Carrot seeds do not decay, however cabbage seeds do! Put cabbage seeds in a clay bowl to stop them from decaying.
-Most other crops can be left to grow on their own without worry. Always replant after harvesting. Two soil + hoe + seed + water.

-Watering Domestic Gooseberry bushes: This is commonly the first task people learn and is quite simple at a first glance. Take an empty clay bowl and use it on a pile of soil. Use the soil in bowl on a languishing gooseberry bush ( appears to be dry and slightly browning.) Next use your bowl on a water source, you may need a bucket if using deepwell or newcomen pump. Use the bowl of water on the soiled gooseberry bush. Success! The bush will now produce 7 more berries! That is only the beginning of the job though. Gooseberries are commonly wastefully eaten over better foods such as stews and pies -- see baker below --and thus require a lot of soil to maintain. This makes the constant need for new soil a more difficult job, so eat berries sparingly! New soil is made from the process of composting.

Compost Maker: Makes soil for the village. To do:
-Collect 6 berries and 1 carrot in a clay bowl. Use a sharp stone on this to mash it up.
-Harvest a wheat with a sharp stone and seperate the wheat from straw by using any curved or straight branch. This also makes threshed wheat.
Threshed wheat can be collected with a clay bowl and is used to make dough for pies and bread.
-Combine a mashed bowl of berries and carrot with a straw. This makes a dry compost pile.
-Water the compost with a bowl of of water. This makes a wet compost pile.
-Get a shovel and bring it to sheep pen. Then collect a poop with the shovel and use it on the wet compost pile. This makes a composting pile.
-Start another pile while your previous one turns into fertile soil pile. You can NEVER make too much compost.
-When your compost finishes turning into fertile soil pile collect it with an empty basket and distribute it to the various farms.
-An efficient production of soil allows for more types of crops to be grown including squash, corn, and dry beans for stew. Stew is an efficient food.
-Excess soil produced can also be used for rope production via growing milkweed. Only harvest milkweed when it is fruiting. Fruiting milkweed can be harvested for milkweed stalk AND seeds. Other stages do not produce milkweed seeds.

Sheep Handler: Aka a Shepard. Breeds sheep for fleece, poop, and mutton. To do:
-Collect 6 berries in a clay bowl and put a carrot in it. This is sheep food.
-Feed hungry lambs to get adult sheep and poop for compost.
-Shear excess adult sheep if you have more than 2. Always leave 1-2 at LEAST alive and unshorn. Shorn sheep do not produce lambs for compost.
-Kill only excess sheep that have been shorn. Use a knife on a sheep to kill it and again to turn it into mutton. Mutton is used to make mutton pies.
-Do not kill your last sheep!! Be careful with knives, if you are a sheep handler keep the knife in your backpack or near the sheep pen.
-Keep the sheep pen clean, remove sheep corpses and dead lambs from the pen.
-If you have ONLY shorn sheep then immediately start feeding them berries and carrot bowls.
-Shearing sheep produces fleece which is used to craft thread, Wool Clothes, and Medical supplies. Shorn sheep do not produce lambs.
-Killing a sheep with wool can be skinned with a knife for a sheep skin.
-Warning about shovels: Moving poop out of the pen with a shovel is a waste of shovel durability. Only move the poop from pen to compost pile.
-If there is not enough room for poop consider making more compost or building a bigger pen. Remember to remove sheep corpses.

Baker: Cooks bread and pies for village. To do:
-Collect threshed wheat made from composting process using a clay bowl, see above.
-Grind the threshed wheat in bowl with a round stone. This makes bowl of flour.
-Use a bowl of water on the bowl of flour to make dough. This can be left to sit to make bread dough. Use immediately on 4 clay plates to get 4 pie crusts. For bread put the leavened dough (which sat for 1 minute) on a clay plate and use knife to make slits. Be careful to not stab anyone.
-Find a filling for your pie, skip this if making bread:
    -Mutton: This comes from using a knife on a sheared sheep. Do NOT kill your last sheep just for a pie. Use mutton on pie crust to get raw pie.
    -Rabbit: This comes from snaring rabbit family holes and skinning rabbit with flint chip. Do not use snare on rabbit hole if it has no baby.
    -Rabbit continued: Mash rabbit in bowl with sharp stone and use bowl on pie crust for a raw rabbit pie.
    -Rabbit & carrot: Combine a rabbit and carrot in a bowl and mash with sharp stone. Combine with pie crust to get raw rabbit carrot pie
    -Carrot, carrot berry, and berry pies. Without meat these become very inefficient. It is a waste of soil. Meat pies are the best!
    -Rabbit & berry: This is also a waste of soil because rabbit pies use way less soil due to only using wheat.
    -Rabbit, carrot, & berry: This pie is a waste because it provides more food than can be eaten due to hunger cap.
    -As a wise man once said to me only eat meat, vegetables are a waste of soil. I think he was talking about pie filling.

-Now for cooking pies and bread.. Find kindling and place in your empty oven. Light oven with a fire brand (long straight shaft + fire)
-Wait for the oven fire to die out. This makes "hot adobe oven." An adobe kiln is not used in baking.
-Now pick up pies / bread and click on hot oven to cook. Right click to swap your freshly cooked pies with other raw pies nearby.
-An extra step for bread: It must be sliced with a knife before it can be eaten. This makes sliced bread. Be careful when using knife.

DO NOT DO EVER:
-Do not kill last sheep. This ends the compost cycle and starves a village. No sheep = no soil and food.
-Do not eat last row of carrots, these are FOR SEEDS. Carrots turn into seeds when left in the soil for 5 minutes. Leave seeds dry until needed.
-Do not cut the last row of wheat. These are for compost, if you run out of wheat you can't make compost with straw. Replant after harvest.
-If you run out of wheat plants for seeds you can use bowl of wheat on deep tilled row to plant new ones.
-Do not use the last soil on one crop only, balance soil use on carrots, wheat, and gooseberries.
