How about deleting tutorial?

New player can learn how to pick up things, when to use right/left click, on some toy as bb (not only rubber ball).

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

I believe the tutorial was put in around the time of screen lock, and it also covers how to use the hint system. It's basically about the controls, which have gotten a bit more involved since the left/right click graphic the game launched with.

Perhaps the controls could be covered by rotating hints on the waiting to be born or death pages.

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

I'm not sure about this!

It was also put in place before the "YOUR BABY IS A BRAND NEW PLAYER" info message.

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

Games are always better with no tutorial.

Edit:  This is a joke.

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

I'm no fan of tutorials either.

I was taking measurements back then, and player retention rates (players who played for at least an hour) were horrible.

The tutorial dramatically improved this number (measuring how many players played for at least an hour AFTER the tutorial was over).

Not sure how much the "new player" message to mothers would help with this.  I haven't measured it.

But we can't expect mothers to explain everything, can we?  Like crafting hint filtering, space to freeze the screen, etc?

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

Could be optionnal (on the login screen) and not the first thing you get into when first starting the game (i know you can skip it but it's not the same)

I also was about to quit after my first game even tho this game looked amazing to me on yt, I loved watching some pros playing the game.
I had no idea what to do and how to do things even after the tutorial.
If I didn't find out about onetech.info and then zooming mod I probably would quit after first or maybe second game.

People don't enjoy being useless.

OP is asking to delete tutorial. I would rather ask to improve it, so people could actually do basic things in the game.

This makes me feel guilty. I often get these messages, but because I tend to have a heck ton of kids, I don't end up teaching them much.

Sometimes I feel like I'm being punished for being a good player (getting high yum when possible, wearing warm clothes) by having too many kids and not being able to do much for any of them. I try my best to get them BPs, but even that goes south with a baby army coming in.

I was joking, Jason.    Tutorials are necessary and important.      There is a very good reason why almost all modern games have tutorials now.

If you don't know how to even start playing, you get frustrated and you give up.   If you don't know what you are supposed to do at all, you feel lost and confused.   If you can't understand the controls, you can't even play the game.

It is silly to thing that this game would be better with LESS guidance for new players.

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

I had 3 newbie sons the other day, was able to teach one

I guess extending tutorials with some "quests" would be nice

like they don't have to worry about resource gathering
they could fix a berry farm, feed sheep or gather branches, make charcoal

kinda sad that we don't really even have enough jobs for them to do, so they can't even be useful even if they want to be

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

If the whole game is on mega death hardmode, new players might end up building an entire civilization in the tutorial, because the actual game is unplayable.  LOL

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

I'm thinking of several small maps you can enter and clear

At least show them how to eat and make a bowl of berry, feed it to sheep

eat a pie, make a pie

make stew

we could even design custom ones then people could upvote the better maps

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

I also bought mobile version of this game after a few days playing original OHOL (I played it just a little, pc OHOL is way better).
They have separate tutorial servers for making fire, farming, cooking and smithing. Here is an image of server list: https://i.snipboard.io/WZQAY3.jpg

Thats how making fire area looks like (2 screens because can't zoom out in mobile to show whole area):

Smithing area:

Notice a book icon with recipies, it's also a very nice thing in mobile version. Easy to find out how to make an item after clicking it.

I wish we had similar tutorials in OHOL.

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

Very cool tutorial implementation.     I also wish something like this was available in the main game.    It would help a lot of new people who struggle to find purpose and stay alive in a busy OHOL town.

Once you understand how to do the basics, it gives you more confidence to explore and interact with other people.   You don't feel so helpless or useless anymore.

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

The tutorial needs to be improved. Players don't know how to do anything once they leave it and they end up giving up because they feel useless.

A very short basic farming tutorial would be HUGE to the health of the game. If players could grow carrots right off the back they can learn how to grow everything else as well and eventually it will snowball into cooking and sheep tending and even more.

Improve, don't delete.

I'm Slinky and I hate it here.

Re: How about deleting tutorial?

Some core skills I would like to see addressed in an expanded tutorial:

How to use the hierarchy system to communicate and coordinate with other players.

How to form a posse with other players

How to make and use basic medicine - yellow fever care, wool pads, snakebite treatment

How to grow at least three crops - carrot, wheat, corn

How to tend gooseberry bushes (but not how to plant more of them)

How to build walls and floors using pine, wood, and stone

How to use a waypoint, map, and specialty race marker

How to domesticate and tend animals (sheep, cow, pig)

How to make rubber and oil

How to make wine AND why it is helpful

How to hunt rabbits, turkey, and bears

....

I could keep going, but this is already much longer than I intended.    There are a lot of new mechanics that should at least get a quick mention in the tutorial so new players don't assume the game is bugged when they encounter them for the first time.   Like how you can't solo kill in a town, but you can do it if no one is around to stop you.

Why did you want to get rid of it in the first place?     You can just skip the tutorial, if you want to learn everything in game.
