Funny story.
Due to all the consternation about the potential for cheap iron to run out too quickly, I doubled the amount of iron in the pit mines and stanchion mines (with the plan of lowering it later, after we got a feel for the new scarcity).
However, I forgot to double the number of uses for the "mine + extracted ore" states that go along with them. When you hit the mine with the pick, it goes into this state, and then you grab the extracted ore, and it goes back to the other state.
Well, in the transition engine, use counts only work if the new object has the same number of uses as the old object.
But these "mine + ore" states had half as many uses, so the mines weren't getting used up.
That has been fixed now, and we can try again (yet again) on a fresh map.

and we can cry out for real for iron
was quite funny that we got so much
I spent a life eating like 8 pies and even made a broth and ate it, and I totally expected that I can deplete that 21 uses or what it was

One thing I did enjoy that the towns made a road there, a room around it (no one was smart enough to fill it with stew or build kilns)
it was like a real industry zone
and that's why it would work better to have an hourly income from it rather than fixed income, cause if it runs out eventually I won't matter to build things around it
it would not be enough work to do a full hour and have a limited income, except for some huge iron sink and maybe some animation time
but with the addition of extra waste material and a chance to pull iron would be a fun minigame like fishing and would allow the town to have an industry zone providing jobs and resources, some of them good some of them not so good.
as for the goal of the whole rework: people rather go full crusade on others to take their iron than to use an engine and kerosene, cause the 40 water is more efficient.
Reducing water would not change that cause that's the whole reason why water is more important now.
And reducing iron won't change it cause won't worth it. So the only thing that would fix it is more need for iron for other techs, and that would still not change the water shortage but at least would be more fun to advance in other branches.

So I'm thinking through the numbers a little. Diesel engine costs about a dozen iron. One set of tools costs about 10, newcomen machining set about another 10, each newc tower another 4. Let's say you build a tower for the well, for smithing and for an oil rig that's 12 iron. Plus a few tanks. About 50 total iron to reach oil tech. That's assuming you can rush sustainable mining tech rather than installing a diesel well first. Also assuming that no tools break and nothing gets lost, which is ridiculous.
Let's assume an average of 2 iron veins within the family well tapout zone. First and second stage each have 4 iron. Third stage requires a pick and supplies 6 iron. Fourth stage requires stanchion kit and supplies 10 iron. That's 24 iron per vein pre-diesel. Or 48 total pre-diesel. If your family settles in a homeland with access to only 2 iron veins it's a very thin line. We're really reaching a point where necessary resources are stretched to unreasonable levels. It's starting to become an exercise in madness.

Legs, the expected iron from pre-diesel is 8 loose (first two stages), then 19 with pick (third stage) and then 46 with pick and stanchion.
Onetech is still outdated. Not sure what's going on there.

Hot fix, just spend a whole life at eve camp searching for iron/veins. Result 40 min walking at badlands to get bitten by a wolf. 0 iron 0 veins found. How are you supposed to get the camp up and running?
This doesnt work!

Were you looking for The old iron vein (which no longer spawns naturally), or the Muddy Iron Vein on the well grid?
There *could* still be bad spots where nothing lines up, but I wasn't having much trouble finding at least one nearby when I was playing.

I was looking for anything iron related. Didnt find anything. I play on vanilla client.

Walk along ley lines. There are muddy iron spots wherever the ley lines cross the grey biome.
To unlock a muddy iron spot (as Eve), make a well site (place 10 stones on a spring) nearby on that same ley line.
