Every once and a while I see a stream where the animations are running in slow motion. And since the game defers action acknowledgement until the animation complete, is kind of slows everything down. We found a fix for this one case:
Target framerate 144, measured framerate on settings screen 103ish
If you know where your game folder is, great.
Steam:
- right click game in game list at left
- Properties
- Local Files
- Browse Local Files
You should see a settings folder, open that.
Edit targetFrameRate.ini to something lower. We did 60 for the above case. Maybe try different values.
For me testing lower frame rates, I also had to change countingOnVsync.ini to 0 to keep the game from complaining about the mismatch on startup.
Other things you might try, but I haven't tested.
- Remove higher frame rates from possibleFrameRates.ini
- halfFrameRate.ini, try slowly increasing value (1, 2, 3...)
It seems Jason is aware of all this, though the number of times I've seen it on small streams does seem to indicate it's not an uncommon problem.

It works, thanks. I always had this ugly slowmo when zoomed out. I think it's a bug or smth, I don't think my fps could be dropping on my beast pc.

I recently started using I think milkweed's zoom mod, I tried it because of the item search feature and engines being hidden. I too noticed a weird slow motion affect when zoomed out. Without a player speed calculation being displayed, I think that my character movement speed decreases during slow motion. The density of player added objects affects the zoom level where the slowdown becomes noticeable. It matters most when chasing or being chased during murder scenarios. So when running away I usually want maximum zoom out, but I tend to have to zoom in some until I seem to run at maximum speed.
I think I can recall instances with the vanilla client in very lively, dense areas that I can observe a slowdown of animations, but it is less obvious that my actual position changes more slowly.
Is it true that my run speed is lowered when the animation is slower? The sound of running or the horse running is also slowed down.

The server is calculating your movespeed the same, but the client will generally defer things while you are still going through an animation. But I can't say I've completely understood how it all interacts.

Target frame rate: use multiples of 15, generally not lower than 30
16 pictures per sec is considered to be moving picture for a human eye
30 is very common for consoles.
skipfpsmeasure.ini -you can skip the measurement but keep the vsynch (vertical synchronization)
generally just makes you wait for animations, rather than skipping some, so you get delay with it but see what happens
recordgame.ini- im not sure if it does anything but if you don't make any recordings, then you can just disable, it helps with low disk space which can be other issue
keeppastrecordings.ini- if you want to keep some but not too many changes this from 20 to 5 or whatever
possibleframerates.ini -just make sure it's same as your targeted, and not too high, you can check if your monitor has 120 or 144 hz
you can add some other possibilities like 30-45-60-75-90
halfframerate.ini this actually worked for me on a very old laptop, made the game playable, are you sure it's not just 0 or 1?
outputallframes.ini - same, no skip but you might lag a bit.
now for why would you choose one or other:
-if you do pvp, then you rather skip the frames than to have delay, can happen that you only see bloody ui and you wait a few sec to actually get stabbed
other issues can be that people pick up pies faster than you, but you still do the movement and bounce in place, or pick an empty plate, or you click horse too late and already runs away, then you click again and same thing happens
can have some teleportation issues, like things appear on different place than before, but if you are experienced player you can predict those changes and it's better to see changes than see how it changed, most time you won't need the exact same item just the item
if this annoys you then keep the vsynch but turn off the check
other issues can be because your resolution and monitor refresh rate so those won't be compatible, so make sure you check those settings
for example if you want to decrease the frame rate for a 144 hz monitor you can choose 72 frames per sec but 60 won't be good, but most monitors are on 60 hz as far as i know
you can also play windowed mode, generally works better just needs to get used to it
the game is portable so you can put anywhere (on steam you need to change directory)
it has many small files so file read and write is more of a bottleneck than video card
so you can put the game on the ssd, external ssd, or you can buy an enclosure usb for m.2 ssd (very tiny, basically just a 2x4 panel), also cheaper if you do it yourself, just match the ssd you buy with the casing (PCIE,m.2,NVME)
