The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

I've logged in on occasion over the last couple of weeks and never for a full hour.
I used to play daily up until the end of November and after taking a break for a while due to personal reasons, I gotta say that it's not worth the effort to come back.
Throughout 2018 there was a sense of frontiersman-hood that made me exited to play; and I understood that if I checked up on the player base after a decent period of inactivity I wouldn't recapture that immediately. Even in my inactivity I've enjoyed reading the emails of Jason fulfilling his vision and giving the community opportunities for further growth.
But just tonight I decided to give it another go, doing something simple based off of what I remember. But tonight I saw this ugly rift for the first time right next to where I was born, the village was centered around making use of it as a wall.

What drew me to this game was the sensation of the world being big. I recall from the emails that Jason wanted to restrict the infinite resources element, which I can understand but this means to an end is a problem for me as a returning player. I enjoyed playing the game and running through the massive wilderness as it captured the sensation we no longer have in real life of the world being bigger than we can imagine and that there was more to discover.
Should I even bother with this game if I want to recapture that feeling of I can head in all cardinal directions instead of half of them?

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

It's mainly psychological, if there was an ocean instead of some dark crevasse you probably would be fine with it.

For the number of players the size of the map is fine currently.

Ideally there would be oceans and continents you can travel to instead of a rift while still having a limited world like earth and eventually space travel to go to other planets.

Maybe one day.

But currently the rift does the job, to limit ressources and bring villages at a reachable distance so they can interact and not 10k apart from each other.

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

I playedd a lot in the 2 "rift be gone" acation weeks, build almost all of a 5700 tile long road network.
I played exactly null minutes since the rift came back. no need to bother with that nonsense.
gonna be salty on the forum first.

the psychological argument is ridiculous nonsense.

the resource limitaztion just instantly degenerates intop torture porn, where half of all emergend gameplay is completely removed for no good reason.

You might want to check out the Community Crucible modded server.   It split off from the main game shortly before the warswords update, so it does not contain the rift.  Instead, it implements various ideas proposed by the community and adds a bunch of new objects and recipes that have been suggested by players.  The most significant change it LARGE biomes.    Instead of small biomes, the map is changed to very large biomes.   So large that you could spend your whole life in a single biome.  Traveling to a different biome is a real accomplishment.    To allow for the large biomes, each biome has unique resources that fill in the gaps in the tech tree that would normally require cross-biome gathering of essential materials.

Not only does it still have that sense of vast unexplored wilderness missing from the post Rift game ... it also has a bunch of new stuff to discover and a nice (but small) community that does not tolerate griefing.    I highly recommend checking it out if it sounds interesting.

https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6794

To get started, follow the link and download the latest version of the client.   Put the files in their own folder (not the main OHOL folder) and then launch the game using the included game client.  It will automatically connect you to the modded server instead of the big public server.  I also highly recommend joining the CCM discord so you can talk with other users, get assistance if you need it, and coordinate with other people if you want to play together.

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

If the world being infinite was literally the only thing that drew you to the game then you are out of luck with the 500,000 tile large rift box. But now the game is better in other ways. There's less untouched wilderness to discover, but there's way more people and villages to discover. You can actually find other villages and interact with them now. The playerbase isn't split anymore into different servers or into the infinite wilderness. There's a greater purpose/challenge in trying to keep families alive to prevent the apocalypse and preserve the stuff you make for days instead of everything disappearing every night to baby droughts.

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

You weren't looking for a challenge, or for a game. You were looking for an infinite sandbox to pour your hours of loneliness into. I understand you lost that, but know that there are as many infinite wildernesses right there in your mind for you to run through. A game with difficulties, however, is much harder to imagine.

That does sound ideal.

Thanks for the recommendation, it sounds interesting I'll consider it.

I don't know, when the spiral was tightened and Eves regularly spawned into other people's towns for a good amount of time before I stopped you got that feeling AND the untamed wilderness. I enjoyed that happening but it wasn't a reason to play.

You must be really fun at parties, that is if you even get invited.

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

I have few doubts about wanting to return to this game lmao. I'm glad he's fixing things that've been issues for literally months now, but with the rift as small as it is and griefers running rampant, I have little interest in returning. Nothing screams "stay away" like griefers literally having 0 consequences whatsoever, outside of being pushed onto other players for 2 days..

Hopefully he'll figure out a better system and things will stabilize eventually. I look forward to it, but in the meantime, not a huge loss on my end- there's plenty of other things taking up my time these days anyways.

To be fair, I think that we have olji to thank for our current ability to make arrow fletching from domestic geese and turkey feathers.

Also, bears are actually pretty nice once you get to know them a little.  They are like dogs that never grow old.  And their syncronized movement is almost hypnotic.

What is wrong with you? Since when do you make any sense? Why aren´t you trolling the forums or mass spamming threads? Are you ok?

Yeah, 2 days is way too short. How many people have been sent to donkey town? Unless you manage to get cursed by half the playerbase within 2 days I don't think anyone ever will be sent.

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

It needs to be increased by a large amount.  Or it needs to stack, if you curse the same person, over and over.    So if you keep running into the same guy, day after day,and keep cursing him for bad behavior, it actually adds up to a significant penalty.

1 curse = 48 hours
2 curses = 4 days
3 curses = 8 days
4 curses = 16 days
And so on ...

Maybe tracked over the last 30-60 days.

So if you haven't cursed that player in the last sixty days, their curse score will reset back to 1.  But if you keep encountering the same guy pulling the same tricks, the punishment stacks up rapidly and you are unlikely to have him born in your village for a long time.

I think the idea behind the new curse system is good.   But it needs some real teeth to work as intended.   48 hours is way too short for someone that deserves to be cursed.   I don't want to be re-cursing the same person every time I play.

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

As someone who currently plays one a week, the personal curse system really only means I won't see them again for the rest of the day.  Perhaps a few weeks or a certain number of lives, whichever comes first.

Curse needs to be your game-time not realtime. It's useless to anyone that doesn't play 12 hours a day.

Re: The Rift has me doubting if I want to return to this game.

I'm fine with the curse duration based on real time.  But two days is WAY to brief.   It needs to be longer and it should stack up, so cursing the same person repeatedly means they stay cursed longer.

I usually only play one or two lives a day and sometimes I will go a few days (or longer) without playing.   I don't want to have to keep cursing the same guy every time I play.   If I've caught him griefing once, I want him to stay out of my baby line up for a LONG time.    That means more than one or two lives.

hooray, turkey feathers got some utility!

yes, i turned one rift into a featherless wasteland full of bears, and then build one long 5700 tile long road trough and around it.
It could have become a racetrack loop.

yes, i jokingly pretend to grief more than i do, because that just lures the dumb people, so i know whom not to waste my time with. its like making fascists admit to being fascists on twitter.
