Fence Rules

So, having messed with fences for a day or two I have some possible soft rules for using them without driving everyone nuts.

1. Don't fence a huge area. You won't be able to keep it up and your kids or heirs REALLY won't. You have to hit the fences with a round rock multiple times in a life or they can be broken with an ax. Family and heirs may not know this or not bother. Also, hitting all those fences takes up a lot of precious game time. Treat fences more like a safe box. A safe box that will only be safe for the last 20 min of your life and that will only go on if someone else cares enough to keep it going. Some people can hardly keep a fire alive with a stack of wood right next to them will they keep your 48 tiles of fences in good shape?
2. Don't fence much in town. A small area is OK, but fences make moving in town a pain in the butt for you and everyone else when they are too large.
3. Don't hoard. This one is a bit subjective, but it's worth asking "why is this important to lock up?"
4. Always name an heir ideally multiple heirs (they will get in eventually, but why hold up development?)
5. Maybe just don't use fences.
6. Respect respectful fences. Milkweed gardens, bow safes, gardens in general anything that isn't a hoard that is modest in size and not blocking traffic should get a chance to become a real fence. Destroying fences just to destroy them is annoying.
7. But really maybe just don't bother with fences.
8. If you make fences, help clean up fence clutter in town, remove old unused fences. Stack fence twigs. You are going to create that kind of clutter when you die.

Any others?

(I've lived my last life where I'll play along with homestead fences. I'm going back to being communist*)

*I know I'm not using this term correctly, I just think it's funny.

9. Don't block gates with oven bases just because you don't agree with the property idea in the first place.

Re: Fence Rules

git gud, a decent apm allows huge fences
don't fence at all in camp, go 20 tiles away minimum from any structure, bushes, farms, exception is temporary fence pen but you do it for public
take duplicates only, the cracked ones if you plan to use it, remake tools, a bucket shop and compost is a good start

make some public work too, firewood compost and kindling from branches, some furs, pick carrot, take out bones
don't make fences on eve camps, maybe with bigger pop

good idea to have a pond inside your fences, and a locked chest as a wall, to allow items given
multiple gates, at least north and south

put your gates first, then rest is quite easy

an ideal self running property has pond/well, cistern, sheep pen, garden for compost, and you can make mutton pie, bread (if you do hats and baskets), compost, fleece and mutton
the locked chest cant be taken away or destroyed, only lockpicked
keep key between 2 baskets inside so they don't see the letter
good to put out bones and stuff into it

bit of roleplay but actually teaching responsible play: sell stuff for other stuff, no need to gain on it, just encourage trading for resources that need to be gathered from a bit further
butt logs, kindling, branches, clay, whatever

Re: Fence Rules

You just need to put a 3x1 patch of dry planted berry seeds in front of your door (or both of your doors if you have rope luxury). Ideally one patch will do, but three makes it harder to block off with ancient walls and such. Plus, I love that I have a little berry farm for the unwashed peasants to snack on if they want to come begging for food.

Gonna be working on getting a potato shop set up, so do feel free to stop by for some fresh baked taters big_smile

Believe you're right, but don't believe you can't be wrong.

Best fence rule - just don't use fences.

Re: Fence Rules

I tried to make a whole fence-setup, but it all went to waste when a kid lured a bear inside.

I think the back of my 'estate' wasn't complete when the kid accidentally lured it inside.

I am aware, but I never mentioned anything about oil in game. At least not to my knowledge. I remember you asking if I was making a shop, then I said initially it was supposed to be a home (but meant to be able to trade). Then you brought up something about posting a similar idea in the forums. I might've said something about a lucky shot you got on me way back in the day with an arrow (I don't think so), but I have no don't remember discussing oil.

Gratz on getting the oil though, I've done it in a lifetime as well. I am well aware of how skilled a player you are. Maybe just a misunderstanding?

Re: Fence Rules

yeah people not seem to care about oil and planes anymore, even if it's within reach

well you mentioned that we met a year ago and i killed you

the lock on chest you made, discord people didn't seem to know that you cannot destroy locked chests so i posted a topic about how to make an open locked chest for trade or item change
