Leather and what it could be used for.

This is a suggestion post, leather is not in the game nor has Jason confirmed or mentioned anything about it. This is simply an idea thought up by me and J3ng3n.

Notice that not all details have been worked out.
We were discussing how we've been a bit disappointed that we can't store things very well.. Yes, there are crates and sledges which do not decay, but that's still only 4 items a tile, and are quite time consuming to make.
J3 brought up the idea of backpacks not decaying, and I told him that would be too overpowered, seeing as backpacks are very very cheap if you have the rabbits for it, and keep up with snaring them.
I told him we would need a very expensive and time consuming way to have a non-decaying basket alternative, AKA: A container that fits inside a box, as I don't think it should be easy to get to that point.
When decay was released, we got the alternative of stone walls to adobe, and a few non-decaying clothing items (Albeit in the future).
We discussed leather, and J3 said there should be a leather backpack, made with the same amount of leather as rabbit fur, but much more expensive and time consuming to get, and it wouldn't decay.
As we talked, we came up with different ways to turn the leather from just cow skin, into a durable material that would last forever.
Most of which I cannot remember the processes we came up with, but it would take a lot of work to do anything.
I'm sure if Jason uses the idea for leather backpacks, he will come up with a fairly difficult balanced way to process leather.
What do you all think? Should we have leather backpacks?

Re: Leather and what it could be used for.

backpacks should belong to adults only
the times i see that a noob gets a packs and you who made it last life, you get left out

generally the game is easy i normally wouldnt mind working for stuff but if we ever wanna teach people and do stuff, it should be a bit easier
not time consuming just would require new tools, and the knowledge to do it, just the privacy it gives, packs are necessary every life

But the fact that you would have a backpack that never decays, you really need to work for it. It should be a long process to do, and perhaps would require resources that aren't renewable so you can't just make infinite packs.

I think we need higher tech clothes in general. I also kinda wish we make something like the decayed backpack, A mini cheaper one for children.

What about mithril armor or unobtainium powersuits?

Re: Leather and what it could be used for.

yeah i love decayed ones, so i can steal normal packs from noob kids, but if there would be an option to make enough for everyone and cannot be stolen, would be better

a shitty small pack would be nice, like straw pack which decays in an hour
if you would make a pack yourself, it should be lost on death maybe, or could be only used by you/visible to you?
i would be fine if cannot be removed as well, so people could give straw packs and the fur and cow hide ones couldnt be used by others
sometimes takes 10 min to make and granny dies with it and they put all on a noob then you run naked for 20 min, feels bad
no wonder people get angry, noobs who cannot make one, always scavenge it and distribute so recklessly, i often see people put on a baby who goes to suicide anyway, under my lifetime a full gear changes 'owner' 5 times while im still not able to make full clothing cause working

so if you make a quality pack, it would mean its made by you, not inherited, stolen or scavenged from dead body

as for recipe
kill cow, cut skin, let it dry
make a tanning station, use pork fat on it, and in the end use a few to make pants or packs or tents
tents would be portable homes with better temperature, for example 3x3 in size and open center for fire, the tiles around would be heated to medium

pork fat could be used to delay death on injury when mixed with other things, a new herb, eggs , this delaying cream would be good when you are stabbed so people can make a fire and heal you, but you would be demobilized and vulnerable

I think we need that and a rebalance in the ones we already have. Skins don't decay at all while sweaters, even dyed ones decay. I know sweaters also insulate better but with a couple skins you can clothe people forever. I think skins should decay quite fast and more complex clothing last longer.

For leather people have suggested belts too, which I would like. I think leather could also be used in animal related stuff in general, like saddles and straps for charriots. Maybe also boots and a jacket, that would be neat.

Re: Leather and what it could be used for.

Suggested complex process: take raw hide, place in crock full of quicklime&water.  Wait a while.  Remove limed hide.  use knife to scrape hair off - result scraped hide.  Place in crock of water to wash off lime.  Wait awhile.  Remove washed hide.  Fill crock with pine needles and water.  Wait awhile - result crock of tannin water.  Place hide inside crock of tannin water.  Wait awhile - result tanned hide.  Stretch tanned hide on a wall of any kind.  Wait awhile for it to dry.  Result leather.   That's a pretty good approximation of the rl process, and I think would take a pretty long time to complete.  Also gives an actual use for pine needles.  Also lime is a limited resource.

Shortened process might be use quicklime on hide to get limed hide, place in crock full of tannin water, wait, stretch, wait = leather.

Omit quicklime to make renewable. Or just add limestone mines.

This is an awesome process, and I like the pine needles and the limestone for limited resource! Super long, nice and complicated, and maybe it takes 3 hide and 2 ropes for a backpack strap to make it? smile
EDIT: Needle and full ball of thread to sew it all together.

Agreed, that is an awesome process, but given the size of a cow? bison? sheep? hide, it'd produce more material than 4.5 rabbits. I'd argue that the reward for such a long, high-tech process, one hide would net the equivalent of two very long-lasting packs.
