So, I've checked all letters crafting recepies and those are my findings about material ussage:

1 sappling
i, V, - (hypen)

2 sapplings
W, T, Y, A, H, K, L, X, N

3 sapplings
F, Z, M

4 sapplings
E

water, sappling
U, J, C

water, 2 sapplings
D, G, S (known as A)

water, sappling, 2 milkweed
0

water, 2 sapplings, 2 milkweed
Q, P

water, 3 sapplings, 2 milkweed
R

water, 2 sapplings, 4 milkweed
B

Basically: B, R, Q, P, O are evil.
D, G, S, U, J, C need some wells.
E, F, Z, M will kill the sappling supply.
We should use as much I, V, - as possible.
W, T, Y, A, H, K, L, X, N are the "main" letters to be used.

We could try to replace at least some "evil" letters with hypens - if word is still easy to decipher from context. Like:
"KILL ALL -OYS"
One "B" less in the sign while it should still be obvious

Lets find creative ways to apply those rules to signs. Any ideas for marking important areas using those rules?

Rules we found useful already:

Directions using NWSE marking with hypens around to make sure people understand you mean direction, for example:
-N- for North

HARE - Rabbits use to many R's and B's. We can limit that by calling them Hares instead.
WATE - even without R it should be obvious we mean water.
METAL - to point to iron deposits would reduce R in "iron"
KILN - instead of "forge" reduces the need for R

Examples:
HARE-NE-
WATE-W-

You could use roman numerals.

....or just not fiddle around with sticks making letters because your life only lasts a single hour....

I also think that making a big sign a filling it with alternating letters B and E should be a <sarcasm>meaningful</sarcasm> accomplishment.

As much as I see the importance in this and was thinking the same since i started test making the alphabet, I hope this discussion doesn’t go anywhere. It would be a lot more interesting and fun if we have to figure this out in game. As part of the experience. Maybe if there is a way of banning “optumization” outside of game chat. Obviously you cant prevent it but it could at least be moderated.

Modarete "meta gaming" out of discord & forums while Jason stated that modified clients are fine, meta gaming outside game is fine and disallowed punishment on "excesive free speach" including racism, etc. Sure. Good luck with that.

Please don't. Some gamers will get it, others won't. Casual players will not for sure. Also - there would be collision with well known model of "NSWE". If some people agree uppon "WASD" we will have problem when we see "-W-" sign. Is it UP for W-key or West?

I added a new feature to onetech today. You can type letters for a sign and it will tell you the needed ingredients and recipe to make them all.

This is a great idea. I can definitely see signs being "worth it" if everyone understood this. It's really not hard to tells kids around the fire either. If everyone reading this post told the campfire kids this once or twice when towns with signs start happening again, then this is viable.

It means the very MOST a sign will cost is 8 skewers - which is still obtainable in 5 minutes or so. One person could make all the signs in a single life.
