Making murder a bit harder

These changes will go live in the update this week.  We'll see what effect they have.

Weapon used to be stuck in your hand and make you slow for 30 seconds.  Now it's 60 seconds.

Death stagger time for victim was 20 seconds.  Now it's 40 seconds.  Plus, victim cannot starve while staggering around (their food stops decrementing), so they always stagger for the whole 40 seconds, no matter what age, hunger level, etc.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

Yay, we've got life extension tekknology! Will we get 61-year olds by repeated stabbing?

On serious note: Thanks.  I would prefer ability to mob up against griefer using common tools, but maybe this change would do.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

Tiny step but at least in right direction.
Slow or fast the murder is still moving so we cant kill him ...

Still no way to cure wounded ...
The only way to stop griefer is to kill him  and allowing him to spawn in next town...

This is awesome! I can’t wait for this!

One suggestion; Maybe keep the hunger going down. This way, if it’s a griefer, people won’t feed them. Chances are, if it’s a good guy, they’ll get fed. Or leave them at three-five pips.

First thought, heh. Won't work because death of old age doesn't depend on starvation?

Cult of the God-Emperor who lives forever by being stabbed repeatedly would be awesome.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

I know this sounds like a dick move, but I have destroyed 3 towns in one hour without any weapons just to prove you, people, that killing is the least destructive way of grief and if you nerf it you just make them remember that killing wasn't the only fun thing to do. People are even more weaker against that kind of strategy.

Now nobody can kill me, if they try they will die of starvation as the killing cool down is too high, so nobody risks his life. The only way to survive is to kill people on perfect heat tile.

Jason, you rather make people learn how to play instead tweaking so much your game that is look like nothing it was at the begining.

Sorry for all people I have hurt

Re: Making murder a bit harder

Well, the weapon hold time isn't so long that you need to eat if you kill on a full stomach.  But yes, killer's hunger keeps going down like normal.  They can be fed by friends, though.

A victim does not suffer from hunger while staggering, and but there's still no way to save them.  And no, this doesn't change dying from old age (which doesn't involve hunger).  Looking at the code, it looks like old age should still insta-kill you, even you're wounded.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

@jasonrohrer

i appreciate the effort, though you tiptoe around the pink elephant in the room

what is the purpose again of prolonging the murder scene ? for the victim & for the killer ?

still not coming back to playing,
no fun as long property is more important in this game than life

there are still tons of games out there where i can kill & be killed with more style & way more purpose serving the goals in those games than murder serves a game about parenting & civ building tongue

It would be nice if you could actually aim at someone hiding behind tree, etc. (the same way you can pick up a hidden item).  Killers frequently hide to wait out the cooldown and then stab again.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

This is a good step.

The people who grief towns without killing, like moving tools and such, they don't get much publicity or attention from the people. And eventually they will get bored and leave the game if they don't get attention. Trolls need constant attention to thrive.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

Jason, how about make the murder much easier. I know it seems strange, but think it again, for the knife or arrow are rare, it's much hader take an revange for your be killed Mom. If we make it easier, which means everyone can revange the greifer. Maybe use a long straight shaft, like we beat a seal! Or a stone, it's easy get for people.
Also I think the violent should pay, that’s the key, we can call it a fight hurt, maybe can reduce his food meter two or three checks. You put violence in people then u will be hurt by the resister(maybe it's on your stamach them you eat less XD ) .
Ps: It's wired we can feed others, but we can't prevent or beat them, if someone take off my busy-using shovel , I can't prevent him!
Pss:Because knife is sharper than long straight shaft or a stone, I think a long straight shaft or stone death killing maybe need four or five beats, and a knife need one as now(maybe two is better, one stab are wounded, and two to death, that gives the victim chances to escape), then every time you put a violence, you will hurt yourself, that means a long straight shaft murder will death for stomach hurt hungry easier than the knife one. And A PLAYER CAN ONLY KILLED LIMITED PEOPLE ALL HIS LIFE WITH COLD WEAPON(one day the nuclear weapon be created that's must another story). The villiage-protectors can gather together, for example five man all with long straight shaft, then they can beisiege the griefer and kill him or at least hurt him imcapable to kill anyone, with every signal protector paid a little hurt .

psss: I told mom the idea, she advice the weapon should include steel ax, sharp stone, fireband, arrow, shovel, hoe, shear, adze and minning pick. And she suggest we can make a violent easy to hungry, because it pay a lot physical strength. big_smile

Anyway I am in a simulation opinion, I do not think the murder should be solved by any intervention, but for me it's a good start to think about the design philosophy, why the problem haven't happened in realworld, or it did, why it was soluted, or the solution in real is the best? Is the solution in game will be better ? It gives me much inspiration about the view of the world.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

Just make it so if you kill you die right away. Makes you think if it is worth it or not. Then if you have a griefer you really have to think if it will save the town to lose you both or not.

One uncomfortably indirect way to fix this is to make it possible to rotate the client's view. Then only hiding behind four trees will help.

Re: Making murder a bit harder

Meh the whining people will only keep whining. I think this is a dumb change.

Look at all the posts saying it is in the right direction, a small step, going the right way.

You even said yourself the murder rate was ~1-2% ... If it was possible to kill people while they are moving it would have been enough.

Watch. The sad pouty griefer is ruining my fun and the "I have quit the game" whining THREAT threads will keep coming. You give them
and they will just want more, cause it is working.

Can I recommend a preview server?  a Opt-in kind of deal. Sort of what like steam does with their beta program.

People can join the new server if they want to see the changes firsthand before it becomes an official part of the main server.

That way, people can actually see the results the changes have and if they are worth it. Rather than piling it all into one main code-base, and then back tracking.

Would also allow you to tweak things before it affects other players who don't really care.

edit: It would also give you more free reign on what you can change and redo, with out having all the pressure of it being an official update.

just an idea!
