One of my favorite activities in this game is to get on a horsecart when I'm 14 and head east. I'll spend my whole life scavenging from old towns and bring the loot back to the populated towns before I die. What are the best items to scavenge?
So far, I would break down my list like this:
1. engine
2. bottles/filled bottles with cork
3. coagulated latex bucket
4. stack of buckets
5. tire
6. drawing plate
Am I missing something more valuable that I could be bringing back? Is my list out of order? The goal is to get the most useful high tech items as possible to fill up the 8 cart slots and 4 backpack slots.

you can put tires on wheels and put 4 in packs, uses slots but you can afford as a scavenger, or end of your life use saw on logs and convert half of it to wheels
any kind of steel, scraps, springs, knives
maybe shredding board
ropes
latex is kind of always needed, I don't think sulfur worth it, also more than 2 glasses kind of questionable
wear a bow or make oe with rope and wear that way

I would add too your list clay bowls - towns are often lacking them, and it's good to have surplus of them. Clay plates are not that necessary if there is many of them in your town, but I usually take them too.
Iron and all steel items that can be contained in backpacks/baskets.

the best item to scavenge is whatever your towns needs more of and it cant be easily produced.
shirts are usually in need and they are hard to make.
1 stack of buckets and bowls cause they take only 1 space and they are greatly increasing village production.
then backpacks can contain: Iron and tool heads, shoes, bows(rope)
If you find a map USE it, write down what the abandoned camp has and tell them to loot it.
