The list is ranked based on water consumption But also took notice of extreme Iron consumption cases.

What to get from this?
Prefer to eat from rank 1 to 50 skipping the foods you cant make.
Pumpkin pie is better than stew, thus pumpkin seeds has to be preferred to be planted.
also, green beans are better than stew.
see the pies, Cheap simple pies are better for Yamming.
In the end, though take all these with a grain of salt, Don't overproduce anything, cause a green been bowl not yammed would be for sure worse than a stew and if you dont store the food you made only for yammers then half of it will go to waste.

I don't want to get paranoid. Yumming is always the best choice even when eating the least water efficient foods. I'll be eating anything that is yum.

yeap this is the practical approach, even yaming the worst yam foods, you would consume triple the iron and water of best Yam But even this would be close to and still slightly better than an average usual noob diet.

i have always thought that all high-tech-tier foods should have a higher value of yum than the lesser ones like berries or carrots, maybe if we rework it so these are still as water-consuming as before but instead give 2 yum? (or even 3, but i see that a little too extreme)

I still think goose, carnitas, pop corn and eggs are good when not yumming, realistically you hit a wall around 15 yum, and you got to be creative with it
3-5 wild foods might help

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

do you not make your own food? I have never hit a wall actually.
And yes wild foods help in times of need.
even a carrot and raw corn are ok to yum.

everyone won't yum, and the ones who do will take from rest
one turkey won't give 2-3 yum for everyone
I don't actually, I don't even farm most lives, I let others do that, realistically you can get skewers and not use a hoe, even so you can use up your "portion" of water and soil
you still need pies for portable food
I really think gathering pays off better than making several yum foods for myself only, wasting the tool slots
if I collect stuff that can be cooked by others I get more overall efficiency
same for pigs or sheep, I can collect all the things they need to process it and I'm better off not using tool slots on it

Cooked goose and carnitas consume no water at all if coming from wild sources. This list must assume domestic animals slaughtered. Wild onions might also take no water. Berries from wild bushes *could* need no water, though they might also. Either way, wild berries don't require soil, while domestic berries do.

LOL Misakas that's funny I've been going ham on the milk yum stations was my number one priority....I did the math by feel, milk's always been great even before bottle and pouch. Corn is OP AF! 8/10 top ten is corn based? NERF CORN! umm wot? I MEAN GROW MORE CORN!
Carrot pie is a surprise I always made it didn't think it was efficient tho.
Ok onions bad for yum then...maybe stop yumming those then.
The top 27 was pretty much my yum chain for long time, less the wine, shrimp, pumpkin pie bottles and pouches because newish or pain in ass, and the wild edibles.
I actually don't berry til way late so can be emergency food. In older gens some serious crazy yum chains can be had.
Misakas is right long chains require some cooking yourself period. Pick up coal cookiing, milk cows, grow / dry corn and profit. I've actually been enforcing bottle and funnel priority on whole milk and skim last few days. Usually I put the funnel in my bag and milk cows refill the bottle and pouches. Stock the dining room with broth, three sisters, bread and butter...that's like most my lives past days.

One other point slightly off topic but we can also mitigate food consumption with indoors
Don't high quality larger buildings give better insulation? Has that mechanic changed? 15x15, 20x20 pine buildings? stitch in high quality buildings later IDK. Don't build much.
Many patches ago I put up a long yum chain (like +60 or so IIRC) camped out in 3x3 stone for like last 20 minutes of life. Think I only had to consume one additional item to make it to old age.

Thanks for building Yum stations Gomez and completing mine as well in the Lord Family.
I had started a Pork taco factory under the kitchen With a forge, table, and A lot of Masha bowls.
About Onions, If you find them, Yum them or make Salsa with them, Just Don't produce them.
About all foods In general, It is better to focus on Diversity rather than high quantities cause high quantities enable mono diets.
The only foods that are great in mono diets as well are Carnitas and Pork Tacos. with low cost on water and Iron as well.
