Food could have a certain group it belongs to:
1. Raw foods
Anything you pull out of the ground or collect in the wild
2. Cooked food
Anything you need to cook on hot coals or oven
2A Main dish
Anything that contains meat
2B Side dish
Anything that is non-meat but cooked
3Special foods (has an effect or doesn't belong to any other group)
Wine, mushroom, ice cream, milk
Players could create a plate with 3 Raw foods (Salad or Turmix or whatever)
This would give the combined pip value plus 3 yum and 1 group bonus.
Or a meal tray with a Main dish and a Side dish
This would give the combined food value plus 4 yum and 2 group bonus.
The food tray would be an item to combine those foods together, so a cook could serve foods on the trays, players could and should create a zone to combine foods and serve it up.
This trays would be yum neutral so eating them twice wouldn't break the chains.
The food bar should be doubled but go down twice as fast.
You could only fill up to 50% from any raw food, above that you would need to eat cooked food. Ofc you could lose 1 pip then go above the bar with one bite.
Yum, bonus capped at 10, giving you a "free hungry work" so kill an animal or cut a tree, mine some iron, etc.
Would reset to zero (or convert 10 into a buff and keep rest) and clearing all the food you have eaten before so you could repeat the chain over and over.
Benefits:
-Collecting food would be important and helpful
-Better arrangement in cities
-A better reward for a varied diet
-A reason for yum to exists other than the memes, a proper reward that can be used for jobs or even further techs (jobs that need extreme hungry work or omega ultra mega hungry work).
-Unified food types (it could still show its name like "bean burrito with turkey slice", "gooseberry and carrot salad")
-Hungry work was first introduced to combat griefers, but now is part of jobs like mining, butchering, chopping, so with advanced activities, we could ensure that the right players can skip paying the price for it.
-People spending time with preparation and collecting can decrease the pressure on the camp.
-Bigger bites of food at once.
problems:
-The game might not support combining food like this so the values should be changed and the reward should be above combined value, possibly even restrict some combinations.
-Vegan riots might require a combination without any meat. Fish and eggs might be allowed.
-"pie with pie" is quite weird
-Combined values are higher than current food bar values
-Possibly need bigger combinations (sugar or salt, sauce, drink) but cut the meal tray in half value and feed 2 persons.
This is kinda similar to how Sims and Planetbase worked. In sims, you had a lot of recipes and you could combine a lot of them, cook it yourself and eat some of them raw, this would require to make those recipes, but we already got enough. In Planetbase you had quite a lot of plants but they combined into Salad/Pasta/Burger, where the first had no meat, the second had corn/maize and tomato and something other, and burgers had meat in them. Also, it was quite nice that you filled the wending machine and made foods with the stock, they all counted as one unit of food so they all kept the people alive but the better combos gave moral bonus.
we got 15 raw (forgot shrooms)
5 special and the feast table (which is similar to this but really high requirements)
18 vegan side dishes which are cooked.
16 meaty main dishes for a total of 55 types of food, most of them require a lot of things so they aren't good to make, some of them are race locked, tech locked, luck-based or rare as the games go on.

Yumming is not a meme, it would be a meme if it was capped at 10. Why would people care about having tomatoes or onions or many different other things if it was capped at 10?. Makes no sense.

it did not accomplish the original goal and created another problem, people like you and spongewood
it's a highly conditional and just a side effect of the original idea, which created a playstyle which doesn't even worth it logically, isn't realistic and instead of making people make a varied diet for everyone, some people make a long unique chain for themselves
it's not even a mechanic, it's just an exploit that came with it, and most people do it exactly once, first and the last time
if you care right now then that makes no sense
until you can't assure that everyone eats those bad foods at the end of their chain, it won't matter anyway
tomatoes and onions were made for the sole reason of having ketchup, same as grapes were made to have wine
then people complained that they can't be eaten, so now they can be eaten but they don't even come close to 25% of berries so it's plain dead content, yum won't change that
what makes no sense that you make 1 single fish or green beans for your own sake and ruin it for everyone else
also that you would require maximum variety of food, that's impossible to achieve
maybe you could produce a few proper top tier foods and make up the rest with some gathered food, that's realistic and balanced
it still counts as a varied diet, the keyword would be "any 10 food types" not "longest unique meme chain"
plus if you do it to save time, then you doing it wrong, cause you obviously don't save time if other methods give you more time and productivity
doing mutton pies will help the cycle of compost
running 10 years for a burdock cause that feeds you 20 pips isn't realistic and isn't worth it compared to what you could accomplish in those 10 years working toward upgrades (if we would have any)
building on broken mechanics makes a bad game

I think it's just you that did it exactly once, perhaps long time ago, that's why you think "most people do it" too. I mean, you shouldn't even give suggestions to change yum mechanics if you are an inexperienced yummer. Current yum mechanics work just great.
I see on live-dev-changes that food is being reworked again, so no sense to continue this topic, gotta wait and see what we get.
Don't compare me to spoonwood, pls, I'm actually a smart person :P

as I said, I gave the idea for the whole system and that's why I hate what it became
that's the problem, it should not work great, with a high chance of not working great, and redirecting focus from important things to memeing around, also in current form shouldn't be a basis for anything
don't talk about game balance from a subjective viewpoint cause you like abusing an exploit for yourself even if others get punished by it
when you will be able to do a 20 chain for the entire city then you can call it balanced
maybe you watched too many twisted videos and you happy eating virtual food for 60 minutes without doing anything
