Since we got so many people hanging around talking, why don't we have time-based research? A research table would be constructed then people spend their time near it, doing an animation over and over, people could talk in the meantime. The research points would be needed for upgrades. It could be per family-based research, so different families got different ordering on tech.
It would benefit families with a stable economy and food production since they can hang around more. Also, people would do less griefing probably.
Right now people are useless cause their time is useless. Instead of hard limitation on tech by things that you got no knowledge about and blocked out by race limitations, you would need to spend time near the tables to gain enough points, to use certain items.
It would be a soft cap and you could do it yourself after a while, but when you struggle for survival you wouldn't be able to do it.
It could have a requirement of being indoors, minimum 4x4 room. That would make the research room more useful. Then it would require random items to advance, a leaf, clay, a limestone, something that would make people explore a bit.

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.
