I just counted, and there was 117 loose iron and 15 veins. Veins produce 20 each on average, so that's a total of 417 expected iron.
According to OneTech, a diesel engine takes 16 iron, but there's also some needed for the machine shop itself (though once that's set up, you're good to go). My estimate for the machine shop is maybe 20 additional iron (including all needed woodworking tools).
So 36 iron total, if you want to make the engine from scratch. So there's enough for 11 engines, or 24 if they all come from the same machine shop. That's probably not enough, but I'm not sure.
It's hard to know, because all the good players focused their efforts outside the rift during this run (because they survived out there post-apocalypse to start anew). If everyone was inside the rift, would they have used the 417 iron more wisely?
So, the current plan is to fix the player leaks (except the plane, if you actually get to that point), and do one more "real" run inside.
If 417 iron really isn't enough, I will expand the map a bit (or make iron more plentiful, not sure which).
Regarding oil:
There were 142 tarry spots
They produce 20 oil each on average, or 2840 expected oil.
That's 11,360 units of kerosene, for that many runs of a diesel water pump, for 68,160 buckets of water, or 681,600 units of water.
Last I checked, berries produced 35 units of food per water, or 23,856,000 units of food.
A green biome naked person burns one food every 5 seconds or so, or 12 per minute, or 720 per hour.
So that much food is enough to support 33,133 player hours. There are roughly 100 parallel players at peak times, so that's 331 game hours.
Or 13 days.
So there's DEFINITELY plenty of oil, even if naked players much berries the whole time instead of doing more efficient things. (There's some fudge-factor here, because I'm not counting water used for compost or running the machines).
Whether there's plenty of iron is another question.
Offline
But also, if you think about the kind if experience that I'm trying to engender (mass-scale cooperation, trade, etc.) then this amount of iron might just be perfect.
It's much better to have ONE machine shop on the map, making all the engines that get traded to other parts of the map, simply because it is a more efficient used of iron than 5 separate machine shops. So if, collectively, you really want to survive inside as long as possible, you will need to transport goods and trade, etc.

Are you forgetting all the iron needed to actually get oil?
Offline
So theres enough iron to make 11 engines, thats if your village doesnt create any spare tools, mass produce knifes/swords (pretty much a must in this state for the huge amount of grieffers). Also you need oil to actually make any use of those pumps and that can be a real iron sink too.
I get the idea of resourses not being infinite, but does it really have to be this harsh. I mean in 16hours the whole thing wiped out... So the world where you build only last a mere day. When i play i look forwards into borning again in to some village where i've created things and see it bloom out that. With the current state the villages have been wiped out after you go to sleep and wake up to a new day. Nothing lasts over a night. There is no legacy just random adventures in towns that wither away with exponential speed...
Imo the runs should last atleast 3 days before the total wipe. Also the later stages are really depressing. Cleaning out big citys when the resources were infinite was a huge job, now its not even possible and grieffing has spiked exponentialy. You just have to watch everything rot and i dont see any purpose on that.
Love the game, but in its currents state its just too depressing. I mean people go through huge effort to not live in the rift or to get stuff there. (Holly family line and the plane)
If you want to enforce trading between cities then we need more tools for it. A cart can only transport so many items. The trips solo are also really boring, maybe if you could travel in groups. With current state if you run up to a village with cart they just hit you with swords and take all the iron and call you with names. You need some bodyguards with you if you gonna drop on these deliveries. Traveling in groups is way too hard at the moment. Theres so many dangers and so little food in the slowly withering world. Some one always steps on snakes/wolfs/mosquitoes(REEEEEE) cause they are pacing forwards to not separate from the group. Or if you travel with slower pace the food comes real issue.
Also would be neat if you could make "super" forges that cost more material but are much more efficient and provide somekinda bonus. Like lets say you could load the huge forge with enourmous amounts of coal and produce high amounts too.
PS. How about the hangmans noose update, that would deffo bring some much wanted drama... Also something to do while the world withers away in your eyes and a meaningfull goal in this depressive world for a depressed player.

This is peak performance though. You're acting like players don't eat pie when one food bar is missing, or make ANOTHER knife when people are breaking them for being too many. Most people don't know how to do things beyond the very basics, so these stats mean nothing to them.
Please dear god expand the rift.
Better yet let us be free like we always were.
I'm Slinky and I hate it here.

Tons of iron gets wasted on failed eve civ's so this is bs we need WAAAY more iron to make this viable.

Jason,
I appreciate the data in this post. I would encourage you to release more data like this either prior to, or shortly after, future updates in order to help us keep perspective.
It does make me wonder why my last town spawn seemed so iron deficient. Did my ancestors just have bad luck in their home choice? Were they raided and had their steel and tools stolen? I did roam a while and I don't remember seeing a single spent vein in my travels. I'll definitely pay more attention to those details now.

If you think there should be more iron, I think we'd all like a new tech upgrade to the iron mine.
Iron still has griefing issues where you can destroy iron by making multi-iron advanced parts and scrapping them for just one iron. And is inconsistent on what can and can't be scrapped.
Offline
to get oil you need 14 plus 1-5 depending on luck per oil pumpjack, then a blade you don't get back
just counted in the other topic
2x2for the valve for the dry well, and the oil
2 tanks at lest
3 pipes, one for engine one for tarry spot, one for oil distiller
9 for 3 cores (i mean you need one for multipurpose, one for well, one for oil) you could technically move the well to oil, but engiens take more time for average players
3 the distiller
the engine js extra 16 on top of that (yeah the tank needed with a pipe)
from that is one small and one big pulley for timing belt
but then there is the roller and the bore, even if you replace heads, you need 2 more blades for bore and lathe
that's 6
then a drill bit, if you do clothes, and why wouldn't you?
loom is just one extra blade blank which can be recycled
that's 2 more
so far 37 plus 1-5 per oil (can be 6-7 if very unlucky)
then there is
hammer, axe, hoe, chisel, adze, froe, file, saw, knife(now that it's needed to recycle stuff, and for lot of food and horse etc.), shovel, pick
that's 11 more, from which 7 is needed to make a mine (recycle chisel and then blade too after makign pencil)
shovel isn't a neccesity but it's really annoying not to have one
hoes arent really needed, i never make them
waste of resources, but they will make them
people make a pen, that needs a shovle, generally a shovel breaks before you even make a newcommen well
until you make engine, 4-5 of them breaks
then i can use 3 hoes per hour, to feed like 10 people
so a town that can sustain 20 people uses up 6 hoes per hour
one chisel wont be enough, saw maybe but generalyl froe will break with 2 rooms covered
is it a waste? not totally cause you need to convince babies to stay
then the waste, duplicate tools, lost tools, useless tools like spoons and extra engine parts
that is between 10-20% of iron sometimes
so more likely closer to 60 iron used until a settlement can make an engine
if it comes from same machine shop, it will be a car
which needs extra 2 iron on top of 16
not likely that someone makes an engine then takes to a far away well
and not likely that all iron will be collected, i would say a 10 % on it as well, like i wont pick up one single iron far away from camp and i seen hidden veins behind trees
also if people lack the skill to do an engine, the more wasted parts and the more delay, an engien ever gets made
who want to work on engine if you got no iron? or rubber at all?
cause i been twice in Liz camp, made the rubebr, the buckets, then next life i had a very easy engine making with the help on kindling and the belts i made, the setup, still even i waste some iron on stuff we don't really need
and later on liz camp had quite some extra newcommen parts that never get used at all
so more likely 60-70 iron for a camp to make engine well and oil
for the loose iron:
bare minimum is 7 as i said but it's quite a grind to do it like that, knife for pencil then scratch it for saw and chisel recycled
so lets say 10 with a hoe extra
that means we need 10 iron per vein if it gets taken by separate eves
if not, we still need iron in meantime
so i suggest 40% increase on loose iron at least
if you really just want logn survival that's fine but i don't actually think, people will stop making steel hoe and rooms just to survive more
for the tarry spots: they are like 60-80 distance on average from a city
that needs roads
not ssure how much road you need to connect all of them
but maybe a bit of bonus on flat rocks?
and lastly
what is the point? like you bringing people together will result in more griefing and killing
whats the point in the box?
when is one family and no one to kill, at least limit to 2 families, sure the new eve will always be disaddvantaged to the other family, but then again, it can find a small camp and boom to revolution
ideal case will be 2 families struggling for power
or 3, maybe different races allied no different families, and race lock people for a day
maybe you can choose the race you want or quit twice daily, so eventually you can try out all families and then you stick with them to the end of the rift resources
i really miss some goal with all this box
and gettign killed a few times inside, really doesn't motivate me to help my killers advance

well even if not a fmaily, but a race
like now we had Li and Dragonette black skin
Dante and Mcracken creol
and some gingers (Mada?) and whites around
you could ally with other families, but only if same race, best way to do this is not being able to kill them
this would create interesting allies around map
i know is like racist, but zerg, protoss and human or ork, human and elf is quite the same

Yea, I'm failing to see how there's anything interesting or useful that can get gotten out of this thread. The amount of iron in The Rift during one of the arcs? It's not only a dead topic, it seems like an un-revivable one, which doesn't have a single issue that can cross contexts. If all you can do meaningfully is say "BUMP", you probably aren't likely to succeed as a necromancer, and the dead will remain in the grave.
