I did encounter one person on the discord the other day who liked The Rift. Elements of the following also seem true for another person who mentioned that they liked The Rift. From what I heard and read things were like this:
One Rift One Life... Life in a HellCell where people would grief the entire map and lock in entire town locations, where you always had to fight griefing intruders, living in towns where you already knew where all of the other towns were (or would soon find out), in a never-ending thankless task of civilization maintainence with finite resources ever running out, and every life felt truly the same.

I liked finite resources but I didn't like it that every life we lived in very high advanced towns.
I liked that families were making fences all around towns just to be safe of other fams, it's too peaceful now.

I liked getting back to same place, but I didn't like living in the ones other made, I made a few good ones
now we are in the open, well mostly, resources might need to be more
you can still go back after a while, since we made the first bell tower somehow, only it's not the most viable since you need the right skin tone to get to anything.

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

The huge north west walled city was pretty sweet. It had some fun aspects as towns and people were competing for resources.
80% of the rift was just clutter madnes of useless items. Every useleful item running out. Fealth like the four horsemen of apocalypse were always present: pestilence, war, famine, and death.
Kinda feel like the world was always in post apocalytic state. Think the rift could work if it would be triggered for making an apocalypse. So instead of insta white screen w'ed get a rift opening around the endtower and every people would start spawning inside rift. So we'd have this world of starwation and war for only brieff period. This would encourage huge town to even trigger a rift when they are packed with resources.

I think you're suggesting a rift period after the apocalypse gets triggered, and then when the rift has problems such that the arc would reset, we're back to an open, infinite world? Such an idea might sound interesting. Then again, a fair number of people would probably try to force it to end as soon as possible. Sounds chaotic. Might be interesting for vets. But, I'm not so sure such a system would work for newer players or causal players. Then again, if the chaotic rift didn't last too long, perhaps it could. Probably would be a more difficult system to run on Jason's end.
