I just came back to playing the game after months of not getting on to see what's new, and I realized there's this rift that prevents us from exploring outwards. Why is that a thing? And is there any way to pass through it?

The rift is impassable other than by plane, and even then you cannot have babies outside of the rift.
The rift was implemented to see what would happen when we run out of resources (Oil,Water and iron) also to encourage interaction between villages and towns.

As oil spots are up to 5 and well spots are up to 6, do we really need the rift anymore?
I guess it limits Iron but still Iron cant feed us without water.
I guess it limits the ponds then.

Killing a griefer kills him for 10 minutes, Cursing him kills him for 90 Days.
4 curses kill him for all of us, Mass Cursing bring us Peace! Please Curse!

How would you limit the world without limiting the size of it? Could be bigger, but if it's limited then what you would do so far away from any possible wells?
I mean, would rather escape the rift than stay inside for long, that was fun at the beginning, get out, get rid of limitations.

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

The rift is likely a temporary thing.
It allows me to actually MEASURE problems in the game. How many resources is enough to sustain a population for how long? Tweaking those values is very difficult on an infinite map, because players can bypass local limits by simply walking further away.
Once I get the game really humming in the rift, that will be a sign that everything is tweaked to perfection. At that point, I'll be investigating ways to still have necessary resource limitations on an infinite map.

That just put a smile on my face!! I'm not a fan of the rift! I love the game, just not the rift, so that gives me hope that I can eventually go back to playing the game I loved! Awesomeness!

I really hope that Jason will one day turn "The Rift" into oceans and/or rivers.

Idea: Make the rift boundary a reverse battle royale mechanism. The longer the arc lasts, the bigger the playable area grows. Done right, this could be a way to replace starter items that have exhausted. That additional tarry spot, well site, or iron strike just sitting a few tiles outside. Survive a little longer, and they will be accessible! Plus, it makes it harder to keep a corner of the rift walled off.

I've seen the rift graphic on screen. I find it an eyesore, unlike much of the art in the game.

I understand the idea behind it now, though I think it would be more realistic if wide rivers or ocean tiles could replace it, like that they could potentially be crossed at some point higher up in the tech tree. For example: Having the option to build a bridge over one-tile wide rivers.

I find it funny that some people are dead set on believing the rift is going to stay. To me, it was always clear that Jason's intention was experimenting, not torture, and that the rift would not be a permanent solution.
