I use zoom and I never get bored.
By simply having a vastly more map awareness enables you to understand what a city needs and also makes you fearless of the wilderness.
You are sure that going out of the city nothing stops you.
bored of farming? Go out, Explore, Bring resources from the wilderness, Oil, iron, rubber, loot, building materials.
Find other cities, see how other villages are doing.
In 24h arc, you can go out of a city Naked at age 3! holding only a bowl of berries and return at age 14 fully clothed, geared up and maybe having a horse cart.
Having a mode makes you free to do ANYTHING.
-----Discovery of the Beautiful city-----
Wandering in the wilderness to look for Iron for my initial city. I found a lost city with an engine, a bunch of oil, Iron and a nicely done city design!
I was a man so I decided to spawn again after my death to repopulate the city.
After some /dies born as a girl to Death family. My name was Minisha
I born in the undeveloped village near the two Tar spots. Our village was poor though and we didn't even have clothes.
Right after I reached 3, I left the village naked with only a berry in hand.
Start walking west, Found a bowl, filled it with wild berries and kept walking.
Then I found BP, later cloths, a knife, another bp. After that, a ruined village, got a cart, Extra clothing, a pie just in case.
When I was reaching near the rift I found another ultra developed city but not so nice as the one I was looking for. Its design was cluttered, small houses, near each other and no Iron. It had a lot of Oil though.
In that city I met a man he was an explorer as well, we chatted a bit, I told him about my plan but he had other things to do. He wished me Good luck though and kept going with his things.
Looking around the city, I saw two uncooked tires. So, I made fire, cooked them and installed them on my cart. Loaded 2 full kero tanks to my newly pimped cart and left the other one in case someone needs it.
So there is me, from a naked girl of the poor village, now some tiles away from the most beautiful city of all!
Fully clothed, with a pimped cart, with oil, extra clothes for my first bb, an apron in case of need. I even had some engine parts, snatched from a Hungry bear along the way, someone must had been killed from her while carrying them.
I had walked far away from any previously seen vilage and was back in the wilderness while ...poof my first girl borned.
I dressed her up and told her what I was doing. She seemed to know the basics and co-operate but I knew she was too young for a trip.
I got her to a nearby bush to feed ourselves and wait for her to grow up when I saw it!
Bones! Human bones! I sign of civilization! I run to the direction their coming from and found a city.
It wasnt the beutiful city I was looking for but it was a fine city for my child to grow up.
I feed my kid, got her a pie in her BP and told her to stay on fire. It was abandoned but it had a fire going for some reason.
I got my cart back to the fireplace with us and talked to my daughter.
"Now this is important bb, the future of my endeavor is upon your survival. Stay here and make sure you stay alive. I will find that city and come back for you."
The village had a dry Diesel pump so I used a kero on it to pump some water for my daughter.
I name her Hopi, got a horse cart with tires from the village, transferred my stuff and ride away!
I didn't know exactly where the city was so I was riding up and down the rift for a while.
I couldn't find it! I reached the top rift, ok I said it must be south, I reached south rift, ok it must be more to the east. Nope, it wasn't.
I reached a ruined village that I remember witnessing it before I discover the Beautiful city. Then it hit me, The Beautiful city was straight east from this village! I run for a minute and YES! I found it!
But now I realized I was lost. I didn't know where my daughter was! I hadn't saved her coordinates.
I was over 40 now and I had no time for extra wandering. I saved the cords of the Beautiful city and gone for my child.
Thank god no long after I found her, She was a fully grown woman and with a young girl as well!
"I found it Hopi,I found it! I was so happy to see them alive but we had to go fast. "Load cart with food, We move!
We fully loaded my tire horse cart and my old tire cart and moved.
I had turn grey and the town was like 200-300 tiles away. Soliyana was young though and I was making sure we move from bush to bush so they remember to stop and eat. We were a family on the move my dream was coming through.
With whistles to keep them moving on my direction and steady pauses for eating we got safely to the Beautiful city.
I showed them around, the diesel pump, the mine, the engine the tons of iron.
As my last act, I made a fire, told Soliyana to stay full and warm to make bbs.
Then I took my pimped cart, stood next to the tons of iron laying around me and Died, with the biggest smile I ever had:)

Great...
Maybe mods should be able to spawn cars and airplanes, why not infinite oil too.
How about a god mode to be invulnerable?
Since there is already god's point of view might as well have his powers too...

I feel like this game is unplayable without zoom mod.
Recently someone asked me where is sheep pen... Finding necessary items is about luck if someone changes their position.
Finding iron veins must be like lifetime job for vanilla users in older arcs where most iron veins are collapsed, not mentioning tarry spots.
People build nice looking towns, vanilla users can't enjoy their look.
Idk, I enjoy playing with zoom, I wouldn't play this game if zoom was no more available.

I distinctly remember mines in particular being a pain back when I was using vanilla. I'd pretty much always find a vein, then go back and get the stuff needed to tap it, and then lose track of it when trying to find it again.
For the time being, I think we have enough content.

i mean, anything under 7x7 is not a good setup, and without zoom people do bullshit like berries next to kilns and walls and anything that would be enough space for a building they don't see the end of it

I used vanilla and don't get bored...
I've found many lost cities it's just a matter of exploring!
When all the junipers had been chopped down, I met a boy called Ben. Food was scarce so we just had to keep moving - from edge to edge!
Ben died to an angry lady on a cart.
I had a daughter who I named after him
We got lost, I never saw her again and I thought I was all alone
That was till I found a town
Full of boys, from different families and different eves. It had a farm! A secure way of food!
And I start to see my grankids among them...
And right in the middle was BEN!
We welcomed survivors who found our town but with no soil or water or sheep I knew it was only temporary
But that was enough
But yeah a lot of the time people just get a zoom mod when it's not necessaryour. I saw someone on discord saying she's kill her babies if they didn't have the mod.
Over time you can move away if you ee a boar coming it just takes adapting.
Most of the times I've been murdered was because a) they had zoom or b) I didn't hear the murder noise (I don't use headphones)

i was really against it at first as well
i had like 400 hours in the game
wasn't the same like now
we had to pave the way, not follow others
we had to create the meta, the efficient ways to build a town, the rules, the plan of the town
i remember first few weeks when i started, we only had a few good players, who could actually make a town
most games were like this: you born in the forest, you tried to set up a farm, you had a bad mother, who couldn't really make anything, so you struggled to even get to bowls, then you had a big family and not much food, everybody running in the forest until all natural foods eaten, then the last girl died until you set up your farm. The end.
Sometimes you were born into a family with a kiln, bowls, carrot farm started, so you went to gather branches and you had time to test out some new recipes. It was actually fun to see the family survive a bit.
Then there were big towns, with adobe walls, plenty of rabbits, we barely had any fur, no one ever knew how to make a backpack.
After a while, around 30-40 hours i started to hunt rabbits, and made like 9 backpacks in a lifetime, with wild milkweed and furs.
Then we had some good towns every once in a week which lasted more time, you could be reborn there, focus on things, projects. I remember spending like 5 lives to get sheep, i died 3 times on the desert middle as it was way too hot and people didn't plan for it. I figured the desert edge trick quite fast, had a life when me and mom survived only but i was a male, and she was too old, so we died together.
I remember starting eve runs by myself and getting better at it. Then making a lot of sheep pens. Then i was active on forums and started the pit pen meta.
Then when we had the decaying items, people started killing each other so you had to defend yourself.
I remember that i was smithing only in towns where girls died out, i had like close to 200 hours when i learned to be a good smith and i was doing a lot of times, kinda every time. Get iron, make tools, make pen each life.
I remember that i was making a lot of fences to stop the horse in strategic zones, scout out like 80-100 tiles around cities without zoom.
Then around 300 hours i was kinda pro in the game and i was surprised how bad others are, when i joined discord, most of "big names" were quite bad, they often died to starvation and animals.
Around 400 hours i started using zoom, like weeks later others did. I was still great at pvp and finding iron mines without zoom but it was more convenient that way.
I think around 1000 hours i was bored with the game and started making my own mods and sprites, lot of tutorials. Now i can't imagine playing without zoom, even my sister noticed the zoom mod, she said "did they change graphics? it looks more modern and higher quality"
So i don't think you couldn't do the same things without zoom. But stuff like building too close and focusing too much in a central part of city, can be sooo bad in city designs. The short fast roads, the big berry farms, the cluttered small places are annoying to others who got a bit of experience. I think 1.5 zoom should be normal default view. And you are missing out on a lot of nice designs when you got no zoom.
To make functional cities, where you can work fast enough, you need to space out things. I still see people planting berries next to kilns as it "needs food close by" or making fast roads to run 10 tiles to other building.
I try to keep in mind that people don't have zoom so i help to arrange stuff in better ways.
I pulled 200 hours very fast, like first 10 hours you are bad with controls and animal dodging. Around 200 hours you can be quite a pro on smithing, eve runs, sheep. Up to 300 hours you got content to try out. After that it becomes repetitive and zoom helps to build better functioning cities.

The question you posit now has me as a strict vanilla user curious. Am I unconsciously bored with the game because of the view? If I were to install the zoom mod, then would I become a gushing fanboy/fangirl of Jason's creation? These are heady thoughts indeed. I'll have to ponder them a while.

The obvious answer is that yes, cheating is more fun than playing fair.
Games are usually more fun when you can cheat to make them easy.

I played with zoom mod for a few lives and tbh it was overwhelming for me. I get I'm probably in a minority, but it's not too hard to remember where things are and navigate that way.
Offline
i dot think it's cheating, it's in game, like i found a settings to emot duration, you can change to whatever seconds you wish
guess that's how whatever made one of the features, now jason can say that that emote needs to last 5 seconds, but some players wish to not press a button each time to bring it up
same with zoom size, jasons argument was that you get a more personal feeling out of it, it's just boring to play for personal feelings.
Might be because he is afraid that on higher zoom it isn't optimized as well. Anyway OHOL is a DIY game, you can do things your way.
Reminds me of travian and other games where you could essentially play it free, but an optimized user interface was included in premium where you could do things faster. Heck, after 7-800 hours i even changed the ground textures as i was so bored with it.
And for comparison: tropico 4 was awesome game, i spent hours with it, they made a great game, but after i was completing missions, i noticed that my town just doesn't work, transport is backing up, nothing gets done. I went to forums and seen people complain about same thing. There was a mod to overlap roads, so cars go above each other, that fixed it. And the game was more fun. Same way mount and blade had a lot of settings, harder mode was fun, i died often, but the real issue was that it took way too much time. Also finances were hard to keep up which required even more time, a few settings like allowing a bit more prisoners made the game more fun.
Jasons opinion is just as good as yours, he doesn't balance things, he just sets up a number. Sure, initial map food was a thing. But the tall objects bug was there from start so you could say that the game was bugged, but then he said it would be too easy now if he repairs that. So what are the numbers he is based on? is it balanced?
food wasn't hard at start, you had to know a few things only
plant carrots, till it, pick it, leave seed row
lot of people never cared just eating food and talking
lot of people never survived in the wild, or make bowls, they just died and went to other family who had a farm.
Then he introduced tons of food which are easy to make compared to anything else. Like it's easier to feed people for 60 years than to make a small 3x3 room.
There are several things that wont wort the cost or effort, it's unbalanced, it wont pressure players on individual level cause there is no xp, no requirement that you can only eat your own produced food or you would have to pay for it. It's unbalanced. So your point is bad. No one ever stopped you from using a mod, and wont make much difference, if you are shit player without a mod, you will be shit with the mod too. If you doesn't already understand the game, then it wont help much.

For me I'd say frustrated more than bored.
I didn't mind the limited field of view as much before, but now as I've got more experienced I find it really limiting. It gets tiresome running circles around town looking for an item I saw a few minutes ago, and when doing a multi step activity it can happen multiple times consecutively resulting in a lot of wasted time and really taking the wind out of my sails. I definitely would enjoy a bigger field of view. I've never modded a game before because I'd rather feel like I'm enjoying the genuine intended experience, but I might have to break that for this game. I don't really want the extra hacks that come along with the mod. I don't want a software advantage over less knowledgeable players.

You can turn off the majority of the other features while using the zoom mod. You can even turn off zoom when you don't need it.
So if you are in town, baking some pies or talking with your kids, you can zoom in and enjoy their emotes and listen to them talk. But if you are outside, scouting for oil or iron, you can zoom out to see the bear lingering just off-scree, ready to rolf-stomp you.
