Lot of games have this I guess, but it's quite simple and fun.
Each family would have a flag.
For each amount of time the flag would generate points.
Capturing a flag from other family would stop their points, maybe add a fix amount of points if you get it home near yours, and generate more points over time.
Re-capturing your own family flag would send it home if you can hold it for 1 minute.
Problems:
The flag shouldn't be unreachable so people won't lock it up.
Traitors who take their own family flag to others.
People couldn't carry their own flag just reset it back home? Would need a set location. Relocating would be an important choice.
I'm not sure what would be the best solution to this, maybe the flag zone would be big. Around 30×30 near flag would not allow building walls, fences or maybe some short interaction would be needed to generate points. Like each person could go and 'pray' to it, giving short buffs for the generated points. Or fulfil quests to go on a higher level of points per minute.
Maybe area of effect bonus so it can be locked but it worth more if it's in the open.
The points could be used to end the arc and choose a winner.
Or could allow some special content or rewards for the leading families.
It would be a nice way to end the arc, with most deserving winners, and people who helped the line, would get a tiny bit of bonus.
Getting a flag could be by war, betrayal, breaking in and stealing it.
Shouldn't be carried by horse and if you put it down it would make you wait a bit, or take off from hunger bars, so it would be a team job.

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

Color me confused but why do we need a capture the flag mini game? Just seems like this would make peace between families next to impossible and suddenly turn Ohol into a PvP game.

For the time being, I think we have enough content.

Ohol is not a competitive game between different opposing sides.
But if by flag you mean a precious/rare ressource that would have some value/interest and could be traded or fought over then yes it could be interesting.
But there is still some issue with that concept because going at war with another family is basically shooting yourself in the foot since it could potentially reset the arc.
Maybe the end condition needs to be changed in order for this to work.

Ohol is a PVPTIE game anyway. (player versus player turned into environment) as you can't defend anyway. You can't do much once someone clicks at you for whatever reason. I rather die for defending a flag or i can stay out of it than to get murdered cause we don't have tech, horses and weapons and someone just sneaking in to kill.
Any end condition that involves random, untargeted destruction and killing to reset the arc, is just a dumb reason to go rampage in the name of greater good. But people do it all day, just go around and murder people for no reason at all.
And it won't slow down or be any better cause they can always say that they are bored with this arc and want to reset it, so they go out to kill anyone and everyone. Reset condition many families? They still killed eves, eve kids, males, last persons of families.
The point in this that you need to think and work for resetting the arc instead of rampaging.
Long time ago that mixed families won't work well, it might be interesting for some, but long term (40 minutes) kills happen anyway, and it's just so much chaos, to try to explain what to do and where.
Can be anything you put in middle of the city, flags make sense, symbols of towns, the point is to defend and attack same time, and to protect the area. And strategic targeted maneuvers. When you got more points you are a target and you can expect it.
The end condition needs to be changed anyway, it's just not fun that 20 people run around killing others, and 60 cant do shit about it.

It's a game about survival, building civilizations and organizing societies, wars just happen because of meaningful diplomatic or ressources reason at least that's what the game strives for even if it's not like this currently.
It's not a game where you win points by killing the most people or matches with points like COD or fortnite.

Don't we all ready have this game?
I call it "capture the bonsai".
