I was the only young woman in a rather large town that was dying since it was late at night in the US and people were logging off. My mom loved to talk and role play, gave me a crown and said that because I was not standing by the fire I was not as likely to have kids to "save the village" is that real? Is it the heat?
I read about an suggestion that yum would have some fertility impacts-- was that ever added?
Was I wrong for going on working? I was having a good time making the compost, the fire is boring.

Both are real. I agree, warmth -> fertility is pretty awful, although I've grown to like the Yum -> fertility.
I actually think it straight up has to be removed. Some people play at off hours only, which is where you're usually forced to to this, and they shouldn't have to feel the need to sit their ass on a fire 50% of the time they're born.

i believe it's heat and fullness as well as yum.
It used to be only fullness, so when you eveing you'd pop a baby out every time you stopped to eat berries.
It does suck but in low fertility times you need the women to eat diverse foods and stay by the fire.

Fullness doesn't matter, only temperature and yum.

well neither matters if no one joins the game, and its an update so don't need to put your faith in the yum
most females on server don't yum, you might snatch the first kid faster but others get the rest
people start games in groups, die same time, start next game same time
for example we talk on discord, then we join in games
or we look at the time, oh its 9 a clock, i finish at 10 and i can track my age
so babies get spread evenly
even so, a town with 10 females can spawn 10 kids while one has only one, who can be a noob or a boy, you still don't have a lot of control about it

Warmth and Yum are the only contributors to Fertility currently.
more specifically,
Warmth:
0 when freezing or burning, to 0.5 when perfectly middle temperature
Yum:
The length of the yum chain (eating two small foods at yum 10 and 11 counts as 11, not 21)
0 when you have no yum, to 0.5 when you have the highest yum chain on the server at the time.
Fertility:
When a new player logs on, all potential mothers (of age and not on birth cool down) are competing options. If you have no yum and are at a temperature extreme, you will have 0 chance for a kid. Your warmth and yum will increase the chance that the kid will be yours. When other mothers increase their warmth and yum, it will decrease your fertility.
Morality is the interpretation of what is best for the well-being of humankind.

I didn't realize it was _that_ important, i assumed there was a base probability of having kids regardless, though one spends a limited amount of time in the extreme cold, so realistically a person is still usually at like .1
still, this gives me far more control than i realized, which is good for making my often failed new camps survive.

Well, there is sort of a base chance: the chance drops to 0 at worst temperature + no yum. But unless you're on a glacier, naked, or on a jungle with fever, you're not at the worst temp.

guess what? if they had a kid, they become infertile for a while, so next kid goes to you
its not like all kids go to yummers
also if you got 3 people, they can collect wild foods for a mom and have more food for her
while places with big pop cant
90% of people wont yum and still take kids
and its bad to increase population after you already got 3 girl kids
do it only when you are lower than that
and do it each ten min, and erase your yum when you don't need it, start again in next 14 min or explain to your daughter
if you spawn females each 14 min, you reach more generations, better gender ratio and better age ratio, old people can gear new babies and that's it
you stil ldont have total control and same as temperature, extremes are bad, balance it out
