How many Iron from a vein?

A couple of weeks (months?) ago the iron is nerfed; less iron in veins and in the wild, so to speak.

But I had in a recent play an iron vein I made into a mine.. and got iron. And iron. And iron. Stack after stack, till there were 57 of them next to the mine.

My question is now, is this normal? What exactly is nerfed? If this is "less iron", how many you could get from a vein earlier? 100? I'm very curious!

Average beforehand was 40 iirc. As with all things RNG varies heavily in the good (your case of 57) or in my case (6 iron in a vein which is one off minimum.) Generally speaking right now you should be receiving 21ish iron per vein with sometimes getting more, or sometimes getting less.

Getting iron via vein isn't nearly as difficult as some people make it out to be you just have to go out there and look for them.

There are quite a few of them out there, but i never carry the stuff with me when i go on iron runs, figuring my odds of finding the far away ones again are relatively low anyway

When you go looking for iron, plan to collect ground iron. If you spot iron veins while you're doing so, use rocks and limestone to make giant lines pointing towards the veins. That will make it easier for you, or someone after you, to find the vein again when they come back later with a cart and the mine kit.

Like many other items in the game, an iron mine has a "number of uses" parameter and a "chance to use" parameter. See https://onetech.info/944-Iron-Mine

Each time you pull an iron out of the mine, it has a 20% chance of using up one of the five uses. So on average, each "use" will give you five actual uses. The last use is special, though, and has a 100% chance to use. So on average you'll get five actual uses out of each of the first four "uses", and then the final "use" will give you just one actual use, for an average of 21 uses.

But if you get lucky, you could get a lot more, or a lot fewer if unlucky.

You got 57 that time because you got lucky.

for me its generally 11 to 15?
worst i had was like 7-8 but quite often just like 9-11 and both mines were 10-11
my luckyiest one was near a town where everyone starved, several times, and the vein was under us, i pulled out like 6 stacks which is 34ish?
i even made a newcommen wall and a new twin kiln system closeby it

I remember like one of the first times making a mine i pulled as them out as fast as I could and I didn't even get 10. I thought "man the gods must dislike pulling with speed" and ever since I've pulled slow and always gotten a good amount.

This is just how randomness works. Average is 20 these days. But you can get 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.
