Couldn't feed domestic calf

I was in a civ where someone had just brought in and fed a bison. It continued to periodically show a calf next to it, but I couldn't feed it a bowl with corn kernals...and it never separated from the mom in any way.

I made sure the pen wasn't too full.

So what else am I missing? It doesn't appear to be the case that i need to kill its mom.

Re: Couldn't feed domestic calf

might be the isses with the server, or you just wasn't there long enough
30 sec to separate then a few more to become hungry
btw you dont put bison in a pen, you put it in a small biome further from camp

there is no reason to have multiple cows, there is no reason to have a bison in a pen
so there is no reason to make a big pen or use the sheep pen for cows
as people will feed more calfs
you cannot kill a cow other than poisoning with a mango leaf, and that's for piss, which is after adobe walls, plaster and paint, so very specific and its enough to have a bison outside camp which produces calfs to kill for this reason
but even when you want to kill off cows usign leafs, you need to wait them to die, despawn

so the best option is to have a separate 1x1 pen, this case the cow will abort its calf and is ready to be milked

Re: Couldn't feed domestic calf

I was there too and tried to feed the calf as well and the same thing happened. It never separated, just disappeared.

The bison was already there in a berry corner pen so I wasn't going to mess with the sheep pen to break it out since that would only release all the sheep and then there'd be fun!(tm)

I just gave up. Something is weird lately and I can't put my finger on it. Animations aren't completing to the final form, like with rabbits finally keeling over. Only when you finally give up and interact does the rabbit finally show that it's dead. This is happening on the bigservers as well as sparsely populated servers and it wasn't happening before this current update.

Re: Couldn't feed domestic calf

I've also noticed that trapped rabbits don't progress towards death if you are not close enough to them, and pein noticed that animals aren't moving if you aren't close enough to them.

I think this is a change, and it's probably only noticeable if you're using a zoom mod. I suspect it has to do with the map chunks that are sent to your client vs. the map chunk your client reports you as being present in.

It probably got introduced with the recent server optimization, where some things only happen every quarter-second instead of many times every second, but glancing through the code I'm not sure how those changes would have caused it.

If I can spend some time troubleshooting it and characterize the behavior in a nicely replicable way, I'll open an issue for it. Maybe someone else can do it sooner.

Re: Couldn't feed domestic calf

I'm playing vanilla because I'm too lazy to download a zoom mod. I'm standing right next to them when it happens.

Re: Couldn't feed domestic calf

There's no way to feed a calf until it separates AND becomes hungry. Different than sheep lambs because ??? hopefully Jason fixes. The domestic bison needs room to move, if he can't move, then the calf won't separate.

Idk how it periodically showed a calf if the calf never separated. If the calf never separated then it would always have a calf with it, not periodically. You're not making any sense.

LMAO, someone did accidentally open the pen when i was there, spent the rest of the game trying to kill the other sheep etc.

But yeah, i was for sure there long enough, i watched the calf show up and disappear over and over again. And someone besides me did set it there.
