Discussion: Quests!

I got the idea on the other topic, i think it deserves its own topic

i often feel like i dont know what to do
i make huge wheat fields or chests or bards or compost, but sometimes even those arent needed, there are too many people, the city is big and doesnt need stuff really, and i feel lost

now what if, you could build a quest giver?

it would be a building with a storage attached to it (there would get rewards)
it could be upgraded for better rewards, better quests

sometimes stuff is needed and  you cant really get nearby, like iron, saplings, seeds, clothes, etc.

now what if by doing something else, you could get things from quests?
we got stuff which isnt renewable or harder to get later on
this are building materials (flat rock, board, clay)
or iron

each quest would have a requirement, some could even take items and give something for it, you woudl have options and a limited time to do them
each succesful quest would increase the chance of return of a similar quest, and increase the difficulty and the reward
could even motivate people to do stuff they wouldnt
this would be family quests, cause cities are still not determined by the game, so you cannot just base them on distance

plant 4 milkweed-reward 1 iron
plant carrot-reward berry bowl
make a compost-reward 1 flat rock

now rewards could be different and tasks too, also you wouldnt be able to complete some cause you got other things to do
but if you got a working city, planting some milkweed, for iron, would occupy kids
later in the lineage, quests would become much harder
make 10 compost-reward 20 boards
make 4 tools- reward 8 ropes
make a locked chest-reward 4 red wool shirt

it would enhance gameplay and give us a task to do
would improve replayability until we get higher tech
we might end up with towns which are unique in a way because the quests (if people dont overdo them before making a stable city)
so maybe a good balancing might be necessary and some data about lineages and item usage, so quests can predict what the city needs
also finishing one would trigger them again and that could also lead to specialization in towns

having it as a hard recipe would prevent eve camps doing quests and ensure old towns can do it

also marketplaces could be with npc wandering merchants, who swap items like pies for building materials, the cost would increase over time to not make it op and overproduction would be that much a problem as now (what is unused occupies place and creates clutter)

also it would be kind of easy to implement and if done right, would be pretty fun for a long while

Re: Discussion: Quests!

Pein, I love this idea. I would see this quite benefitting, when enviroment becomes dry of nearby iron resources. Though it would make it easier for secretly griefing people to toss boards all over the place... to add ropes aside... oh dear.
But it would benefit in a long run, as long as there are no knifes everywhere. Jason really needs to do something about knives... perhaps stuff them in bowls like files and chisels and other steel tools.
Also locked chests would be cool but then again, the keys would be trouble to find after 10 generations big_smile

If you ever enter Pea (Helkama turns into random name) family, you need the lottery ticket picked up. My baby names given can be absolutely random.

Re: Discussion: Quests!

Quest sounds fun ^^

That would be also a great idea for new players!

You are tired of always doing the same job every life or you don't know what to do ? You have one or two new players who are begging for jobs ? Be their Quest Master !

Give them an objective, a task that they must fulfill in order to get a little reward. They managed to make a fire on their own ? Reward them with their very own berry bowl, saying "I belong to [Name of new player]". They hunted down three rabbits ? Give them their very first pants !

I had a son once, who was always asking me for something to do. Once he was old enough to work, he was asking for a job. I told him to help Granny, who asked him to gather some kindling for the forge. And so he did. After like 10 minutes, he came back and said "Alright I'm done, what can I do now ?"

I told him to go hunt rabbits and he asked "How many ?" "As many as possible" was my answer and once he had like ten rabbits, he came back to me and asked "What can I do now ?". Once he thought, that he had finished a job, he wanted a new one and I gave him new stuff to do. Cook the Rabbits and then eggs. Tend the berries etc.

He was so sweet and it was somehow cute to see how he didn't know that you can do one job your whole life ^^

Also can we have challenges ?

For example

Every two weeks we will have a challenge :

- Build the most beautiful cemetery, garden, medic station or bakery. You can have teams and meat up in discord. Post your screenshot then in the forum, with your name or the name of your group and everyone can vote which building was the best.

- Who can have the highest Yum Bonus in a busy city or a small town in one hour ? Screenshot of the number just before you die.

- When born in town X, find the Lonely Goose in a pen using the clues around the town.

I don't know, I just like the idea and sound like fun ^^

I'll definitely will try to be a quest master in my next life :]

Re: Discussion: Quests!

Thats not really the objective of one hour one life, the quest thing seems more like starve.io to me... but if you just want to make your own quests I have a few ideas:
1) Winter farm. Clothes make this easier. You probably can't expect a lineage from a winter farm but as a lone male would be good challenge. The idea is: winter patch with green, orange, blue biomes around it. Get materials from the other biomes but try to live in the winter biome.
2) Olympics. Make lots of games. Penguin racing speaks for itself but rockball needs more explaining. the idea is, its like basketball. you have to get the rock into your basket (actual straw baskets on either side) but you're stuck in the middle. you can hold the ball but you can't run with it. (I don't know basketball ok? I don't know the rules so if I'm wrong forgive me) You have to put the rock on the tile in front or behind you and then its a race between you and the other player to pick it up. Side note: I didn't make this game. Credits go to many other people who have played it with me. I think one of them was a man named Steve. Thanks Steve.
Another game could be hide and seek. Works in tree biomes. To make it easier for the seekers people have to move from the trees when they get hungry. Kids get hungry more often so works best with kids. Another tree game is spies where you hide behind trees near town and listen in on everyone's conversations.
3) Bear hunter. In a town make a 3x3 wood panel square, try to cover it completely with bear skins. Another one is throne builder, where you try to make the best monument someone can stand in, i.e. bear on stone floor with mother graves all round and a sign saying our mother our protector. Still another one in this category is scribe. Try to write as many documents as you can. Compile them into a book, lock them in a chest, give the key to your most trusted.
4) Yum. Get as high a yum bonus as you can. Mine was Yum x15 and I will beat anyone who yumraces against me.
5) Livestock. One dog, one pig, one goose, one cow, one sheep, five separate pens. Bonus points for signs saying "cow" "sheep" etc.
6) One hundred baskets, go!
7) Trap a bear in a fenced pen. Not only is this a challenge, it would also be very helpful to the town... Well... maybe a stone walled pen, if you were willing to pen yourself in to save your town. Like, when you were very old and had given away your clothes.
8) MUSHROOM FARM! Someone has already done this challenge, and it resulted in a very high aftermath. smile
9) Convince eight people to curse someone random. If you are of a strong moral compass, convince them to curse a murderer or dog breeder or someone.
10) Make a sign with every letter of the alphabet.

I double dare you to do every one of these, and to post the pictures on forum!

Re: Discussion: Quests!

sheared sheep challange

sheared sheep stays inside the current biome
amass most as possible in a small biome big_smile
you need to feed them, and use a rope to take them out of pen, then shear it, they should stay in the biome (sometimes bioems are bugged to two sides of other biome or they cover some part of other biome, but if its smal land not fragmented should work)

make a full set of red and blue clothes

make an arena out of graves/fences/clay
lock it, put corridors around it and a way inside so people can see the fight, food for the spectacle
only one fighter can exit
chill mode: have a doc saving the loser

Re: Discussion: Quests!

Like Karltown, said, makes more sense that we incorporate quests as RP elements.

Pein, you can probably make some nice gear pretty fast, you can use that as quest loot to get people to do what you want.

Re: Discussion: Quests!

they die and someone takes it

the only way it would work is a room, two players and locks
very situational to make a shop

Re: Discussion: Quests!

I had an idea for a quest long ago.  It was to find a fountain of youth which is a very rare well that fills your hunger for life.  There would be only a few on the server and you could go looking if you where bored

Re: Discussion: Quests!

I think we're supposed to deal with boredom creatively.  What to do in the big city:
be a gold prospector.
build a maple tree park.
Produce backpacks and clothes for all.
Be the best baker, making the maximum variety of baked goods (why does no one do this?)
Be the town crier by carting around the four most important pieces of paper and reading them to the kids.
Forage for hidden knives and crowns and collect the scattered dishes
set out horse hitches across the land.
create a pyramid
Cart buckets of water from afar
knife battle to the death with a willing elder.

I love all of my children.  You are wanted and loved.

Re: Discussion: Quests!

Player created mini-quests was kinda what I had in mind when proposing currency and market stalls. The implementation is just semi-locked chests that allow anyone to swap certain items for gold and vice versa. So for eg a smith's market stall might sell finished tools for gold, and buy kindling / straight shafts for gold. This way a player who does not know how or does not want to smith can get a tool by delivering kindling and wood to the stall for gold then trading that gold back to the stall for the tool. Similarly, a player who likes to smith might wander past an unattended smith stall and see that hoes and shovels are out of stock, but since there is plenty of iron and and kindling in the stall, they can easily earn a few gold by making the tools and restocking the stall.

Re: Discussion: Quests!

guys I agree we should push currency and communitary projects but in this game we'll have to do it ourselves.

Would help if we built a sort of currency system, based on iron or stones or whatever, but it's not like anyone has the need for trade in the game yet. Maybe when we get more uncommon but important resources.

As of now the best I can think of is asking to young working kids to help on your projects for a big reward. Mostly they wont do it and will try to steal your stuff so make sure you can enforce what little ownership you have.
