How to make a successful city?

Most of my Eve runs are fairly miserable. I've been able to conistently get a farm going and even raise a few children but it never lasts. Most of my children runaway and none have been able to produce the next generation yet.

But then I spawn into giant cities with a large family and advanced technology. But the majority of Eves do not make it to this point.

So my goal is to make a successful city or town on my own rather then just spawn into one. Any tips?

Re: How to make a successful city?

deserts make it viable or lot of people die even if they are decent

so try to have desert nearby the water, and plant the berry on it
later temperature matters more than water distance
so edges of desert help kids grow up eating up to 4x times less

berry bowls early on help a lot, go to forest, fill bowls with berry, it helps to work and not just stand around

it requires to have a decent kid who knows what he/she doing, like gen 2 should make all tools, at least axe before run out of branches and shovel before run out of water
gen 3 should make a pen
compost saves on carrying soil
each kid needs basket and bowl also a purpose, so talk to them about plans

some kids run away regardless but having a desert and stable food source is a reason to stay, also population control, dont keep all kids, keep 2-3 females and the smarter boys
dont keep any who cant stand on desert edge, if they waste as baby they waste as adults

focus on making the bowl and planting the first bushes, and maybe some carrot/corn
increases survivability by a lot, also less people suicide if there is at least some berry bushes

its really not up on you, you need some mediocre daughters and some decent grandkids to be able to reach cart era, the only thing it makes a city long lasting is composting, and having a desert for the naked people

Re: How to make a successful city?

A lot of what Pein said is pretty accurate.

An eve's primary focus should be setting up for the next generation. A lot of this relies on food, but also location and a few other things you can get done in your lifetime. Picking a good spot and getting the farm started is your main goal.

For the most part the people worth sticking around will do so if you have a decent location picked out. The best location has a desert, a lot of ponds nearby, and a good sized grassland close by. You'll need the grassland for a lot of supplies and food, the ponds for watering your future farm, and a desert to stay warm and lose hunger less quickly.

I tend to grab a sharp stone, a basket, and a couple things of rope as I search. It'll help you settle quite a bit faster, as you won't have to search for these things in the future.

Temp-running also helps a lot. When you stand still on a tile, it locks your temperature in until the next time you stand still. If you stand on a good, mid-temp tile, then move away and don't stop moving, you'll remain warm and consume less hunger as you go.

Rush the kiln and fire when you find a decent place to settle. I'd suggest about 4-6 plates, 2-3 bowls and a clay nozzle for your first batch at the kiln. The plates will come in handy pretty early for omelettes [and later for pies], the bowls for farming, and the nozzle for iron tools. Personally I also like to snag an extra adobe and make charcoal when I finish firing the clay, so the next gen can get to iron tools faster.

The sooner you establish a reliable food supply, the better. I'd usually suggest a 3x3 or 3x4 plot of berries to start with, planted as soon as you've got a bowl. Skewers, cut from wild saplings, work well for tilling your early farm- a basket of two or three usually does the trick for me. No need to waste milkweed on a stone hoe, you'll need it for more important things later.

They'll take awhile to grow, so once that's done you should focus on gathering other foods. Omelettes are great early food- easy to make and almost always fills up your food bar. Cactus Fruit is a great wild food if you have cacti nearby, berry bowls will last you and your kids a decent while, and burdock/onion are okay. You could also plant a few rows of carrots if you have a nearby savannah, as they grow fairly quickly and can help a bit.

If you get a decent amount of food prepared and the berry bushes grow in early, you may be able to help with the first iron tools as well. For me this is usually gathering some iron from any nearby badlands, so my kids and grandkids won't have to stray far for it. It could also mean snaring a rabbit if you've got the time, and assembling the bellows if you're able to.

In the end, a lot depends on how competent your children are. New players often will end up starving once they're too big to breastfeed, or just sit around clueless, unsure how to progress. If you're lucky, you may have some experienced players though- they're usually easy to recognize, as they don't meander or hang around a whole lot. If you do, they might be enough to eventually upgrade your eve camp into a town.

And remember, if you as the eve set a home marker and die of old age, you'll have a  good chance of respawning in that location the next time you spawn as an eve. This helps a lot with creating these advanced cities you speak of- as a lot of it wasn't done by just one eve's family, but a multitude of them.

Re: How to make a successful city?

Honestly big cities are more based on luck than finding the perfect spot, of course if your spot is terrible with no water it wont last long (an  experienced player might just relocate to a better spot)

I've seen big cities that had only 3-4 deep wells with all the other ponds being quite far

It mostly depends on the number of players on the server and if they are willing to live a life in an early settlement and if you have experienced players in your village that know how to farm, forge and all the other useful stuff

Also the more people in a village the more chances an old age eve will spawn in this place and generrally old age eves are experienced players

As for the eve tips, if you have a daughter willing to do an eve run then dont abandon her even if its the start of the game, you never know it might be the one that brings all the babies when you're too old

Most eves rush kiln for forge but imo it's not a bad idea to start a small berry farm with skewer or stone hoe (skewer better so you dont use rope needed for other tools) then you can use water pouch to water  the crops

But if you have a large amount of eggs then rushing kiln is not a bad idea to make plates for the omelettes

@JokHowling "And remember, if you as the eve set a home marker and die of old age, you'll have a  good chance of respawning in that location the next time you spawn as an eve." That only works on small servers, the chances you respawn in your own place depends on the number of people in a village, and usually starting villages dont have a lot people

You will never get a city done in 1h of Eve life. The way cities are done is by having the Eves spawn back to their old home marker and reviving the place until it becomes a city.
So: be Eve, do what you can, set home marker, die to Old Age. Spawn back either by pure luck or by suiciding until you roll an Eve life at your old home marker. Keep developing the place and raising kids. At some point other Eves plop in your town and develop it too as now Eves spawn where someone else had died on the server.

The "original Eves" who start from scratch are lucky if they see a sheep pen before they die. big_smile

Re: How to make a successful city?

if you skewering dirt before bowls i will suicide
one hoe is ok if no iron closeby
you can get 4 ropes, make the snare and a hoe, and plant a few bushes making a hoe from the fire brand, water it, this takes max 15 min and you  got the berry farm going, the rest can be made by kids, the first 2-3 matters
its a waste of soil skewering and its so bad not having a sapling farm later on cause the eve was skewering dirt left and right

Re: How to make a successful city?

@pein you can make a berry farm with only 1-2 skewers (not talking about the weak skewer but the normal skewer)
as for the waste of soil, you only waste one per tile, if you make a 3*3 berry farm you only wasted 9 soils wich is equivalent to 4.5 tiles (at two soil per tile) so not that much

then by the time you finish your kiln and fire bowls and plates the berries are ready and you can start a real farm with the bowls and a hoe

Re: How to make a successful city?

Basically, dirt management.  You have to have people aware of how important it is and so are keeping an eye on the necessary resources for compost.  People who aren't munching berries when there's six other food items strewn around them.

In my opinion, the weakest link is almost always a lack of a solid sheep pen with pooping sheep.   The next weakest link is people not understanding the "yum" factor and food and just munch berries all day.  It's important to NOT munch berries when there's other food around because it's needed to produce sheep dung and the compost material itself.  We're all guilty of it, I know, but the more you can limit it and eat other stuff (pies, omelettes, cactus, even carrots which tend to be overproduced) the better.  Then people don't tend to keep an eye on compost.  Then I always have to go running around looking for the darn shovel.

In larger settlements, before you start making a road, backpack or walls, check on how you can contribute to the compost chain including by making pies from the mutton chunks and rabbit carcasses which are almost always strewn all over the place.
