Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

I'm spending most of this week on bugfixes.  The game should hopefully be a lot more smooth and stable before I leave for GDC next week.

Tomorrow I'll be doing a bit of content work for a small update.

As part of that, I want to patch the existing content with various "quick fixes" to fix oversights and obvious things.

Stuff like:

--Branches can't go in the cart.
--The Mouflon Hide does not keep you warm
--Rabbit bones are still a pain to work with.

I know there are a bunch of other little 3-click fixes like this.  I just need a list of things that people have run into.

This should NOT be feature requests or big changes.

What did I mean to do but forgot to do?  What doesn't work consistently with the way other objects work in the game?

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Please please let us add water to restart deep wells if it's not an intended feature for them to die outright
Would it be possible to set up domestic berry bushes to have the same refresh rate as wild bushes?  Setting it up so that after 6 berries they need to be watered, (7th refresh = dry bush)  6 berries all at once for the first harvest is the bomb, but after that, thinking long term, it's more efficient for composting to have them produce one at a time

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Weapons interact with right click rather than left click.

Edit: Actually that'll just lead to "bad things" if it was on left.

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Currently we can add 3 bowls full of gold into a basket.

Please make it so that we can add 3 bowls full of berries (for compost) into a basket.

Maybe: Add single berries to a bowl till we get a bowl of 4 that we can use to compost

Thank you!

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Would it be possible to allow for baskets to be "swapped" with other baskets that are on the ground? That is what every other item does when you right click a tile, but baskets seem to work inconsistently. I'm not sure if this counts as a "quick" fix or not, so apologies if it considered a feature.

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Make it so that fires heat up people around all sides of it. That way, we can put babies around it for warmth instead of stacking all the babies on the top tile, which makes it really hard to feed them.

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Make more items stackable; like baskets, bowls, plates, flint ships etc.

At the moment most villages look like trash heaps due to the amount of clutter littering the landscape.

Thank you for creating this amazing game, it has been ages since I have had this much fun with a game.

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Both shallow and deep wells do not refill if dry, but you can't manually refill them with say a waterskin if they are dry (unless of course that is intentional). If it is intentional, then perhaps some way of telling how much water is left, like in ponds? Otherwise they're just very expensive and strange looking walls.

Thanks for the amazing work you do!!

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

I've got a couple pull requests for small fixes if you're up for merging/re-implementing those:

https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife/pull/11
https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife/pull/14

I can send these as patches by email or whatever if you prefer.

It's weird that filling a bowl from a berry bush uses up a varying amount of berries, it means you get more from picking down to four and then filling a bowl.

Some way to deconstruct walls, possibly multi-stage with a timer meaning that two people need to work together to do it?

A scream when someone is killed violently would be great, not sure how hard it'd be.

Oh!
As an Eve it would be cool to be informed with a *crying* baby sound when the baby is hungry AND another sound when it is starvng. Maybe?

EDIT BY JASON:

Wow, some amazing suggestions in this thread.  I'll do more later, but I got up to here for the content update on Thursday, March 15, 2018.  I need to go to sleep now, though...

END EDIT BY JASON

Rightclick On Backpack - toggle items like baskets

Some of my ideas:
Hot Mining Pick Head#flat rock + Smithing Hammer = Hot Ax Head#flat rock  (to cycle the tool heads again if you overshot)
Round Stone + DUG Hard Rock = Sharp Stone
Pine Door + ANY = Open Pine Door
Open Pine Door + ANY = Pine Door (so you can open them with item in hand, atm you can die out of starvation in room/animal pen if it gets cluttered around you for some reason and you have item in hand)
Dry Deep Well + Bucker of Water = Deep Well (only for bucket?)
Tree + Steel Ax = Chopped Tree With Logs#3
Butt Log + Steel Ax = Fire Wood
Mining Pick (or) Smith Hammer + Adobe Wall (any) = Adobe (or) Adobe#2 (or) Adobe + Parial
Forge + Empty Hand = Bellows + Kiln
Kiln + Mining Pick = Owen (or) Owen + Adobe
Own + Mining Pick = Adobe (or) Nothing (or) Base
Milkweed Stump + Shovel = Milkweed Seed (or) Empty
Bowl of Mashed X + Self = Clay Bowl (+ minimal hunger?) - just to empty the bowl
Sheep Skin + Drop Spindle = Fleece
Timed: Small Trash Pit + 7200s = Empty
Dye-Ready Wool X + Water Bowl = Wool X

Using backpacks right now is very difficult, the "clickbox" for getting things out is pretty tempermental

Basket Graphics:

Basket contents should be more distinguishable.  Carrot seeds and other such small items are nearly invisible in a basket.

Greater graphical separation of items in a basket would also make it easier to select the specific item you want.

(I heartily second adding some ability to restore wells)

Not sure if bug or intended, but the audible starving warning does not trigger when you are very old. I suspect it is intended, but since it's not consistent, I thought I'd bring it to your attention as well.

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

Not sure if intended, but clothing insulation appears to be incorrect? I could also be reading the code wrong, but it appears that wool insulates worse than furs, which doesn't make sense as wool takes a very long time to procure? The relevant forum post on (https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=530) is actively discussing and trying to break down the issue.

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

The current berry bowl crafting recipe feels unnatural (why should harvesting 4 berries from a bush be different from placing 4 berries in a bowl individually?).
You could make berries stackable up to 4, and add an additional recipe of clay bowl + pile of berries = bowl of berries.
This seems in keeping with the game mechanics and would allow all berries to be used when making compost, rather than forcing farmers to eat a third of the crop.
Not sure if the scope of the change is larger than what you were looking for.

Re: Request for list of content quick-fixes for tomorrow

[edit] I thought it said suggestions, not bugfixes. Oops.

One line suggestions:

- Rivers (water source + breaks up terrain into noticeable landmarks)

- Landmarks. Large stones with carvings from ancient civilizations. Anything. That way people can say "Walk past the big head, and then go north."

- Fake Cliffs. C&C, Starcraft, and recently added to Factorio, use "fake" cliffs to make the map look and function more interesting. Basically, there's no actual height to them, they're just blockable items/terrain. But they serve to break up the monotony of the map. They serve as landmarks, as well as strategic value.

maxresdefault.jpg

Game mechanically, they have no actual "height". They're just blocked terrain. Arrows/guns shoot over them (as long as you're in range.) People/NPCs/tanks walk around them with normal pathfinding.

Imagine having a village "atop the cliff" or "beside the river."

Also, for a quick one:

- Bear skins do nothing useful. (AFAIK). They're just bear rugs which are disappointing given how hard it is to fight a bear the first time. They should be cut into "half pelts"  and each "half pelt" should become a full (or decent amount) of a full wardrobe. That way, you can risk the dangerous of a big animal, for the reward of many clothes for your family--much more than you would get from tedious (but less dangerous) small game animals like rabbits.
