Feeding Sheep for Poop

In one of my previous lives, someone stopped me and told me that I you have to feed the sheep only when it's hungry, otherwise it's a waste. Is this true? I've always fed them before they're hungry and still gotten poop?

Any lamb will drop poop if you feed it, except dead ones but you cant feed those anyway

Newborn lambs are always hungry, I don't know what this person was thinking ^^

newborn turn hungry in few seconds not right away and they can still be fed, except they got some dumb movement when you are down to last empty tiles, and by the time they are hungry you might not be able to feed them if you run after them

calfs and porks cant be fed until they are hungry, but there is nothing wrong feeding lambs whenever
