How much does your food cost?

Someone asked for this yesterday, or something like it.

So I factored out everything that could reasonably be renewed. You'll notice no soil is accounted for, for example, because everything is composted and the real cost is how much tilling you can do with the iron you have available. Water is plentiful of course but I've included it as a cost anyway. Certain things that are genuinely infinite, like wheat seeds and corn kernels, I just ignored. The amounts of time are simply based on the decay times, there are other times associated with these things that are harder to quantify. Rabbit hunting for example requires time to go to where the rabbits are, collecting salt water is the same. Making stew does just have a lot of steps as does making sauerkraut, those too also have cooking times that aren't included but in that case it is because I reckoned it wasn't very relevant when compared to the question of how many berry or carrot plants do you need. And of course just the time spent for someone to go pick up the food and eat it is included nowhere. There are probably more caveats surrounding these numbers that I have forgotten.

Given straw is one of the most valuable resources (composting and baskets), anything that's "<<< straw" is typically better than anything that's "<<< wheat".

Those who have been involved in long-term civs and the generation runs know what I'm talking about.

Tacos are shit. You should NEVER farm pigs (unless for RP reasons).

Pies confirmed as best food.

In the 288 gen run we needed about 70 baskets or so. Pies are definitely essential and from looking at the above numbers, it does appear as if berry pies are superior if we're trying to minimise our iron usage.

Berries are the most efficient scalable food in terms of iron and eat bonus exaggerates that too. Cooked rabbits are more efficient of course but are not scalable. I don't think iron is all that matters though. The main reason I included all the timings is to work out what sort of space is needed for the food production operation. Assuming a point of food every 10s we'd require 3.7 perfectly managed berry bushes per person to sustain. As a guess though I'd say most farming operations are only run at 25% efficiency. People just get distracted by other things. So for sustainable berries you would want 14 berry bushes, 0.4 wheat plots, 0.1 sheep and 0.2 carrot plots per person. Certainly doable, berry farms do get large, we know this. If everyone is naked all the time might need to increase a little for cold.

just make berry roads or 4-5 plots on middle and corners, not all in same spot, blocks harvesting, fixing and everything

more refills better than more bushes

and kindling from a died out bush is pretty good imo- carrot and other plants leave a hardened row so can be tilled faster
kindling from a dead bus and planting other bush if needed still cost one tilling and one berry converted to seed
so dont fix every fricking bush, let it die out and cut it

I'm not convinced of water being abundant;
Update 127 and 159 came with a water nerfs of -33% then -20%, and I've seen many cities bouncing between dry wells.

Therefore I'm a fan of milk/dairy (in theory; milkweed for buckets and such are a cost), ~and skimming this data I don't see a clear contender for 2nd place.

I did some preliminary maths on carrying capacity with regard to local water sources.
What are the implications of this on keeping our lineages alive?

I have witnessed the power of milk, and I swear I will stay on it. It has kept me alive pretty well for a small cost of bowl of water (right?). Lmao.

Though I still wish people notice in time that cows should be kept in separate pens, because having them together with sheep can truly be a tough cookie. As small as possible, too!

Wondering your assumptions on a couple of things like carrot seeds, and whether to till once at the cost of soil. Also maybe add two uses of shovel for every compost (moving dung).

I have my matrix like this, but it doesn't give the exact same results as you, so I'm not sure where I went wrong (looking at berry)

For people who love extra credit math, you should figure out how much yum you need for all the different foods to be good. Even eating the worst food in the game is probably worth it if you need it for the 20th different food in your yum combo.
