The easiest way to determine what a city needs is looking at the tools
determine which stage is the city
1. eve run
2. early gen
3. late gen
4. decayed city
1.
eve run: your mom is naked, you only got a kiln or nothing
jobs: get a basket for yourself, get more if you see reed, ask to be fed
go gather some burdock, onion, berry (decays in basket)
get some ropes if needed
get adobe for a kiln (4 pieces)
get clay for bowls and plates (minimum is kinda 4-4) later on is still useful to make more (1 plate per pond, 1 bowl per 2 bushes, 1 watering, around 4 for smithing)
get branches until axe is made, the sooner you pick up branches the better, after 1 hour you lose the branches technically
also having more kindling makes the forging faster
after this you can get carrot seed, berry seed, one rabbit (for the bellows), backpack, iron
once you got bowl bring home bowls full of berry, generally the eve needs to tend to kids, so if you are girl and old enough raise babies and cook eggs, 1 each minute so the fire lasts longer
if you are a boy, go outside and gather food and branches, you can even try to kill wild animals so they don't kill your sisters
gather stone around ponds
flat rocks around kiln
do not: go straight to make pack, not having bellows denies tools
do not make other fur clothes, having one pack for each person is better than you having a loin cloth
do not make an oven out of the adobe from forge, this delays tools, also you might mess up their work and they lose the charcoal
do not try to make adobe pen using reed and clay, wait shovel
do not plant stew plants if there arent enough bowls and plates and kindling, this can delay smith up to 40 min and is very frsutrating
do not try to make 3 pies, its very wasteful early to kindling, also pies are portable food, they are best for explorers, doesn't really help anyone to eat pies and have no tools cause of it
2.early gen
after the axe is made it allows to cut trees, go and chop the swamp trees, desert trees, but not the green biome, even yew tree has branches which are useful until you have no extra iron for new axe
collect firewood and butt logs
plant milkweed for bow and arrow, for making packs (you can also go further and gather outside city)
you need smith, hunter, baker (if got some carrot and rabbits) cook eggs, a farmer, and gatherers
you need to get straight shafts for tool making
do not try to make full fur clothing, chop every tree and do not plant endless fields of berry
after shovel:
you need to dig up everything around berry field and kilns, stones, stumps, reed stumps (if the basket/adobe was made 1 hour ago it will despawn so the first shovel needs to be used to dig up reed stumps)
tree stumps are for kindling, use the before chopping firewood, that makes the fire last longer and it's a lot of trips to get it, its still a waste if you chop firewood into kindling after shovel
start making a pen using adobe or bell tower bases, put a rope inside and a bowl of berry with (wild) carrot, bow and arrow
do not dig every single grave you find, especially suicide babies, if you make a grave make sure to take bones into a very cold or very hot location unsuitable for anything else
after hoe:
allows mass farming, collect soil and dump 2 bowls of it generally clsoe to water on a desert edge
after froh and adze
make a mallet, make boards out of butt logs (before someone puts it to fire)
plant milkweed for ropes
make fence kits (1 for first well, one for mine)
after chisel
wait until they make a file, then if the food production is ok and you got iron you can make rooms, still nice to ask others where to place it, i seen people using up 3 chisels and i couldn't make a saw and i seen it only 30 min later the stone room
shoot a goose and cook it for file making
after saw
you can make 3 buckets (1 for mine, 1 for usage, one for well)
you can make a spindle this is four, so one butt log, 4 disks
you can make 4-8 wheels for carts
milkweed for ropes and signs, stone for wells, empty the closest well to be able to upgrade
after pickaxe
you can make a mine and rearange fast roads, relocate oven near the pen
after knife
bread and mutton pie avaliable
after shears
aprons and wool clothes, tree planting
the most needed jobs in early generations are gatherers who get the adobe, the stumps into kindling and arrange the camp
gather soil, some extra food
3 advanced city/late gen
when you got all tools, sheep, you can plant wheat, make compost, plant carrots, feed sheep, tend to berries
compost keeps a lineage going, this is the most important job which is needed to be done first and foremost
now picking down berries into bowls is a good job for kids, and everyone, berry bowls help on sheep feeding and composting, generally goes half half, as each compost needs one dung
if you eating berry, gives a yum bonus to eat both from bush and from bowl, also better to pick down at least half of the bushes into bowls, fix it in 2 minutes and have the rest eaten by kids
now this is a stable state
compost, mutton pies, you need to reach it as fast as possible, can be done in 40 minutes if all people work together
if you don't help to archieve this, you are kinda leaching on the society and make someones life much harder
if the city has all this, you can talk, roleplay and build rooms, etc.
4. decayed city
a lot of error fixing and arranging
first off the most important is to remake baskets, fix pen, check if you got all tools
carts, buckets, cleaning up, mostly same as advanced city but you need to focus a lot on storage
each life a bare minimum of: making a few baskets, dont take from others
make a few bowls or get clay- you need watering or eating stew, picking of berries, around 20 + is good number
making plates- you eat omlette, pies too, bread around 36+ is good number
get back sharp stones, ideally everyone has one but at least 3-4 in the city
a few round stones in city, dont make well out of last one
plant some sapling for letters, and have one home marker, generally next to a bell tower on making
for advanced, make some compost, make a cart, make a backpack, make wool clothes
most of cities are a mess, not enough baskets, boxes, milkweed
kids use the same bowls which the eve made and people dont work cause 5 people need to use the same tool, so if you got a basket and a bowl and a plate for each person eliminates a lot of suicides and killings
also you can ask geared persons who made their own gear not the 24 year old spoiled kid who carries her 5th kid and eats all food
or keep meetings each ten minutes and talk about next steps
retrieving stuff from outside city, plates, baskets, bowls, sharp stones also important, scouting each biome next to city and bring stuff back
most useful jobs:
composting
iron gathering
hunting
milkweed farming/gathering (for ropes)
making pen, getting sheep
gathering kindling and firewood
retrieving bowls, plates, stones, tools, clothes and arranging stuff
baby raising and teaching
most of this are boring
useful and fun:
smithing
baking
sheperding
building
making clothes (wool clothes, straw hats, seal jackets)
currently i think most people work around the berries or the oven
the most experienced people do shepherding and composting
lot of people just run around looking for something, talking, waiting for soil, waiting for fire, waiting for firewood
to improve it we can do a collective effort:
-make rooms for holding firewood
-make rooms for clothes
-make notes
-make multiple small berry farms in each direction
-tell kids to farm milkweed, make baskets, make pottery, pick berries in bowl, arrange similar things together
-make multiple ovens, pens, fields
edits: rewrote the whole thing
todo: each job in detail

Good guy Pein producing another guide.
When making sheep pens, it's ideal to have entrances/exits on every corner, preferably using a corner fence kit, since unlike filled trash pits they are removeable, allowing for future expansion.
Don't forget that the Yum Bonus is INCREDIBLY useful and EVERYONE needs to be cognisant of it. If there are certain foods unavailable in a town, then it's a great idea to work on producing that food. Yum Bonus can provide upwards of 60% of your calories, meaning if you're a good player you'll be eating FIVE TIMES less food than a sponge (Yum Bonus + temp).

Thank you so much for this. I was building up a mind map of this but the text is much better.
One thing I learned here is that I was trying to go for the compost way earlier!

maps differ but you should have enough soil in wilderness to sustain small farms
pen can be very good early, but you cant just jump trough the steps, is very hard to gather resources while others wasting it
once i promised to get sheep, but some kid took the bow and arrow and couldnt make a new one, cause people kept making clothes out of the milkweed i planted
i do think pie and stew kinda bad before compost, while its ok to have people do what they like but some of us need to see the complete picture and keep the momentum going
