Ideas For Better Buildings

I have played many hours of this game now, and one thing that I always notice is the lack of shelters in each "settlement." When their are buildings they are often crudely made or unfinished. I also have some serious problems with making sheep pens out of trash pits, and laying down planks as roads. I think we should come together to think of a few solutions to this problem. In real life, shelter is one of the first things you should worry about, so the game should not be any different. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying the game is bad. I just feel like its missing actual settlement building. I'm tired of the days of living and sleeping (I know we don't sleep) next to a forge in the middle of the woods.

Here are my ideas. First there needs to be an option to make dirt floors. That way, we remove the wooden roads problem, which is very annoying to me for some reason. If you could say, take some stakes and use a shovel on the floor option of the stakes, without requiring soil, it would give the ability to really flesh out the foundations of settlements very early game. This would allow settlements to look like real settlements, and then later on people could make stone roads instead.

I also think that fences should be easier to make, so people stop using trash pits. Either that, or make it so trash pits can always be walked over. Because sheep do not deserve to be trapped inside a wall of trash. That's just animal abuse.

finally, I think that shelters should be made more necessary in the game. Probably from adding certain weather conditions like rain, with a mechanic that makes you lose hunger fast or something. (This could also give rise to needing umbrellas too). With an added necessity for shelter should come with easier to build shelters. I'm not saying to change the shelters already in the game, but add new walls that are easier to build. These walls could be made from something like thatch, or even branches. The idea is quick shelters, so people will be able to build them early on.

So what are everyone's thoughts on this? I know other people have mentioned some of the things I said here, but I wanted to share my added opinions. Because I think these things are very doable, and should be done.

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

I think rain won't be a thing. Jason said something about the whether once.

I also would like to see more building options.

Maybe other doors for pens, so animals can't pass, but the player could.

Also for smaller animals smaller space requirement. So maybe you could build a henpen where 4 hens could be stored on one tile. It's a bit weird that you need to build a pen for goose as big as a pen for pigs.

Oh, those are good ideas. The pens definitely need revamped for sure.

Also, one can dream for rain, right? It might happen someday if enough people ask for it.

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

I'd buff buildings by giving them superior storage options than outdoors baskets and boxes. Towns need to be more compact anyway, the endless clutter is hell.

Yes, definitely. I was trying to think of something about that clutter as well, but I couldn't come up with anything. You're on to something with buildings having more storage, but how though?

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

Well adding bigger storage only for buildings will be a bit tricky. There is already a mechanic in game that knows if a room is closed, but what would happen if you say boxes get 8 slots indoor and someone demolishes the wall, would all items fall all over the place?

Probatly you could do it with the design of the object, so maybe you could have a wardrobe that stores one complete set of clothes and keeps them from decay. It would feel intuitive to build it indoors, but since it would be anyways better then a box in storing clothes what would hold you from building the wardrobe into the woods? So if you see a wardrobe in the woods it would feel a bit weird.

Probatly best solution would be to make more expensive/highertech storage solutions like boxes just with more slots. So more work needed for better storage.

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

The main reason why humans built shelters is because it would offer s protection during their most vulnerable moments, which is sleeping.

Sleeping isnt in the game.

Therefore, it is absolutely not a priority to be surrounded by four walls and a roof on your head.

Well if the temp buff would be increased buildings would make sense, also they protect you from hungry grizzlys.

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

Just generic shelves would already be a big step. More items per tile than box (3x3 would be nice), but requires floor to be built. Floors in general would be required for building fancy stuff, and the level of flooring would determine the level of fanciness. For example, a packed dirt floor could let you build shelves. A wooden floor could let you build wardrobes. And a stone floor could let you build an iron stove that functions as both coals and hot flat rock while lit (can do recipes for either, but not coals recipes that get item stuck until coals go out). As for restricting them to indoors, I think these things should decay fairly quickly if not in enclosed structure (no decay at all while structure stands tho).

Maybe also add tables and chairs that can only be placed on floors. When you eat at a table, you gain bonus hunger from the food you're eating.  The floor idea is good, because then no one could destroy the floor without removing the item attached to it.

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

I think the primary purpose for buildings at the moment is to lock them. Structures have almost no use if they are not intended to keep most of the town out. I've seen great success and great failure with the implementation of safehouses. I think that the issue with making buildings more necessary is the fact that they take so damn long to build, and require so many resources. It's usually a multi-generation thing that no one wants to put the effort into - and big rocks are not exactly a sought after commodity to eves. It's risky business without making them easier to create.

So to clarify what I suggest, perhaps big rocks should allow for the creation of two walls, not just one. I think that this does not make much sense visually, but neither does a lot in this game - like how tiny logs get when they turn into the handles of tools. Incomplete buildings are always in abundance - and if a half built building can be made with ease in one gen, then if we just double the number of walls stone (and maybe also adobe) can make, then a team of a few builders could crank out several buildings in one life cycle.

Now everyone can have a prison, a safehouse, and one of those weird stone sheep pens people always make that kinda look stupid.

What is an ominous blade blank?

It's that blade blank next to the file and short staff you see in a naked toddler's basket.

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

Floors need to buffer temperature so that "indoors" is slightly warmer or cooler than outside.  That would make people want to build buildings to they can work inside of them.  This alone would add a huge motivation to build.

Cheaper walls and floors would be great too.  Dirt floors/ roads in particular would be awesome.

In the ownership thread https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2543 Jason comments that maybe construction might be a bit too hard.  So maybe there's hope for us to get buildings as a more commonplace thing?

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

Yes, construction is something reserved for advanced civilizations, but I think there should be something much simpler for the younger settlements

Maybe Indian tents, walls easier to make, walls with mixed materials, small shelters in trees ....

The rain I also see it necessary! Fills the wells, waters the crops and lowers its body temperature

Rain dances ... yeah!

I saw this in the tutorial... but I thought it was due to there being a fire inside the building?  Also if you shut the door and stand one tile just outside of it, its slightly warmer there too, warmer than when the door is open.  I literally have no idea how this works.

Also- if it does buffer you, its only warmer and never cooler?

Re: Ideas For Better Buildings

dirt roads would be nice, marking way to things and planning out, maybe asphalt from limestone?

fences are too expensive and the diagonal looks bad

pits should have connected version, then it would like a castle moat
pits shown that we need cheap and fast version of rooms

sadly items cant be bigger than on tile, i could imagine caravans

one fix would be more logs from trees, cut boards in 3-4 and make fences like that
in real life, sheep is stupid and may fall in hills but doesnt need good quality wood, we made in real life pen, which was made of long fences, would be more realistic 2 or 3 tile long fences, for example the cut boards would make a 3 tile long fence and use 4 for a small 3x3 pen, and make it harder to remove, like only by 2 players same time, tents would  be nice from buffalo/cow hide

terraforming should be a thing, not searching for desert tiles

walled cities also were nice

increasing clay chance or uses or making clay mines
we could use straw and a clay mine for a lot of adobe

im kinda afraid of buildings as they block more than help when built incorrectly, no one used the stone buildings in trinity
but large compartment might work

also ropes, there seem to be never eough, we would need higher tech to make it cheap ropes fast
milkweed is a pain in the ass when people ruin it, no one creates extra
or no one uses as intended
