i've been playing for almost 3 months now and the game always has been running rather smoothly with sometimes some spike lag (you know, when you "bump" against an item several times before taking it or puting it down, or a player suddenly running all over the place at high speed), or even a bit of slowness when i started a game in a big city, but it would come back to normal after a few minutes.
but for a few days now my game has been really slowed down dramatically, especially when in a populated area, but also if there are horses or sheep moving around or even the rabbits popping out of their holes.
It only return to normal speed once i'm totaly alone.
I seem to remeber a topic about reducing your framerate might do the trick with an explanation on how to do it in the settings folder, but i coudn't find it anymore (i gave up at the 4th page back on the forum)
Any tips for me ?

only reduce framerate if your monitor is capable of running on 30mhz
halfframerate.ini set to 1, if im correct skips a few frames
set your target framerate to 30
not sure about this one either but only choose 30 or 60
but if you can set your monitor to 40 mhz try target 40 and possibleframarate.ini add 40

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

Has anything changed about your graphics card during this time?
Sometimes even something as simple as overheating during hot weather can cause the frame rate to drop (the GPU will slow down to save itself as opposed to just melting).
It's probably not moving animals, but just too many sprites on the screen, leading to too much pixel fill for your GPU to handle. Crowded areas are crowded with lots of sprites.
