Any way to free trial the game?

Hey, I'm someone who randomly found gameplay videos of this game on youtube, but while I find the concept and fast-paced nature of the game quite interesting (The fact that its multiplayer, society based and challenging also interests me) I have a very limited budget in my life. Is there any way that I have not found, to free trial the game? I'm keen to try it out but I really can't afford to spend 20$ on a game to play for an hour and then never touch it again if I end up disliking it...

the game is free, if you get from github, linux version especially kinda easy to install, the servers arent free, but even so allows temporary login if you install it, it worth every penny, you might need to play on a custom server with easy lower hunger until you get the hang of it.

The game is open source, you can compile it yourself https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife
Without buying you can't join official servers, but community servers should be fine.

Trying to figure out how to compile it myself, are there any guides out there, found some helpful stuff but nothing like a step by step guide.
