Questions About OHOL

I've looked thru this forum a bit, and I never see anyone asking questions, so I'm starting this thread for those of us who have been around long enough to have a few old age deaths but not long enough to be in on all the subtext.

Am I the only one without a map or coordinate system? You all talk like you know where you are when you spawn. I never even know what server I'm on, let alone where I am or where the closest town is. I would love to have some kind of map, even if it is a small one in a corner that shows colors for nearby biomes I've already explored.

What is Discord? How do I join? Or even just lurk their forum/chat/whatever? It is constantly referred to, but I have never seen a link.

Is there a quicker way to talk? Typing while trying to get a harvest in or smith or pretty much anything is a real pain.

What is the best way to deal with the pesky kid who wont shut up and wont go away? If I tell him/her to shut up and go be useful, they usually come back later and kill me. If I take the time to respond to their constant interruptions, I can't get anything done. (I'm not talking about the ignorant-but-curious kids who just need information. I mean the "I like your penis. I hope mine is that big. Mom, when do I get a penis?", "You're a girl", later-"Mom, look at my Vagina! I have hair now!" or "Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom", "What?!", "Am I a bad person for killing all my babies?")

How do you tell your descendants to STOP FEEDING ALL THE KIDS! but still convey that they have to keep some of them to keep the town going. I dont like killing kids with weapons. This just leads to murder all around. But if each female only raised 1-2 girls and a few boys, resource depletion wouldn't be such a problem. Especially if you could encourage several of the extras to go off together and start a new town a few screens away.

Before responding with negative comments about idiot noobs, please note that I said this thread was for relatively new players. If you cant say something helpful, please go away.

If you have questions about the game or have the answers to questions, I would appreciate your post.

Re: Questions About OHOL

1) There is a Map Coordinate application that certain more experienced players use. It's not vanilla. For the most part, people don't exactly know where they are.

2) Discord is a VoIP app that allows people to communicate with voice chat while playing games. It's pretty popular. Here is a link to Discord.

3) Typing is the only vanilla way to communicate, and it's inefficient.

4) Ignore your kids. People will learn the hard way by starving to death.

5) Another thing people have to learn as they play. Being active on the Discord and forums is a good way to learn, besides just playing and getting in hours.

Good luck smile

Re: Questions About OHOL

simply dont trust anyone
if you are nice to kids, they might be nice to you, roleplay a bit, still some assholes kill you for no reason
i usually make a knife and never stand near anyone with backpack

you can kidnap kids as old mom or as a guy, and just toss them 2 screens away, if they find the way back, they deserve to live

my newest strategy is to make a room out of sheep bone or dig thrash pits, make seed room, make room to smithing
primitive defense but better than nothing, cant walk around your forge, you can place babies inside small fences, bit further

when they toss kids at you keep the smarter ones, ask to follow, ask to stand on good spot(find the good temperature desert tile)
ask if new, ask if they can collect branches, in basket curved shafts, or bring water, farming, hunting, composting, ask to keep meeting each ten min

no good way against baby machines, shoot them when no one sees, but that generally hard, they surrounded with other nabs, just move out and make new camp

I thought the characters were composites of all the sprites. Aurora was asking about pics of the in game people
and I was trying to find them but all I found were little pieces like a mustache or an outline of a torso.

I just assumed it built people out of a part from each category so he could draw less things? Guess not..

Re: Questions About OHOL

The parts exist because they are added on as the character gets older, at least some. There are 8 main character sprites, the parts get put on as they get older.
I'm just wondering why there are only 8 characters, though I have a feeling this won't be for long, as in the trailer, some unfamiliar characters are shown, especially with the orange haired woman, we've never seen that one before, maybe genetics in the future? Oh, also about sprites, where can I find the character parts?

OneLife_v65\sprites

They are .tga files you might need to find a program to open them.
I have https://www.irfanview.net/ this one, seem pretty barebones which is good cause I only use it for weird shit like this or editing game files.

Re: Questions About OHOL

I found the files but I couldn't open them, the program might help. Thanks! And why are there only 8 characters sprites again?
I have a feeling that this might mess up my files so im deleting it. But, it did give me a nice view of the sprite (parts)! Thanks!

If you want to talk/hang out with people who know how to play, come to the Discord. The level of misinformation in the forums is appalling.

Some people have told me there is a way to create a basket without using reed. Is this true, and if so, how is this made?
