Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

This week's update involved quite a bit of coding, which is pretty much done now, and some content, which is part-way done now.

I figure it's best to get this out there and let you hammer on it to find problems.  There are certainly going to be problems and bugs.  I've tested it quite a bit, but these are some pretty complicated changes.

On Monday, I will finalize the update with the rest of the content that goes along with it, make a news post and image, etc.  There's some pretty cool content in the works.

And if you're wondering, the tattoo content that's available now is place-holder, to let you test it out.  Yeah, I said tattoos.

Stuff that has changed, that you should play with and test:

--Family biome specialists (jungle, arctic, desert), and illnesses for non-specialists.  Non-specialists can't touch anything there.

--Client pathfinding auto-avoids "bad biomes" for you, unless you walk to the edge and then step in on purpose.

--Stuff you're holding should be dropped outside the bad biome when you get sick

--Roads and floors protect you from getting sick in a bad biome.

--If you step off the road/floor and get sick, the stuff you drop should land on the road/floor.

--Mousing over a bad biome explains the situation.

--Oil only exists in the arctic.

--Rubber trees can only be planted in the jungle.

--Tilled rows cannot be made in the arctic (to balance some new content that is coming on Monday)

--Rubber trees produce one bucket each instead of infinite.

--Rubber seals are consumed by pumps.

--A bucket of rubber now makes 4x items instead of just one.  4 tires, 4 balls, or some combination.

--Language learning as a baby is 10% per generation, with no way to grind faster through spamming.  If the baby hears the language at least once, they learn 10% of the remaining letter clusters.  This learning happens most-frequent-clusters first.

--Non-specialist skin tone is polylingual.

--Property gates are now made with shafts instead of rope.

--A whole raft of bugs were fixed in the way that the client handles corrupted or missing data files.  It shouldn't ever crash when rebuilding caches and such now.

--The tattoos make use of a new permanent emot system (emotes that stack and last your whole life).

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

I like how we aren't even pretending to work out the kinks before releasing major game mechanic changes anymore.   It adds an element of danger and mystery to every update, like sticking your hand into a jar of bees just to see what might happen.

Could be terrible .. could be awesome ... maybe you'll get super powers?

Only one way to know for sure.    Let's do this!

I'm just one guy, and I'm trying to update the game weekly.  So working out the kinks takes a back-seat to progress.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

I know the reasoning behind it, but I can't help thinking that it costs as much time as it saves when you implement these kinds of radical changes so quickly.    One week to release it.  Four weeks to fix it.

Perhaps I'm just being pessimistic.

Yeah, this isn't EVE where bugs could ruin thousands of player hours of effort. As long as the game remains playable, the bugs don't matter all that much, and can even be interesting.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

Yeah, I guess you are right, Kinrany.  We are all pretty used to being lab rats by now.  Do anything often enough and it becomes the new normal.   If the radical changes stopped, we'd undoubtedly see people complain that game was too boring and predictable.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

So I've tried it.

A couple opinions:
A) It would make more sense to drop stuff on the first snow/jungle/desert tile instead of outside.
B) You should definitely be able to pick stuff on the border. Just block transitions if that is possible.

Couple bugs I found:
1) You don't get biome effect if you don't click on it. Meaning, you can go through the biome just fine if you click on the other side (more beneficial to zoom players).
2) You can drop stuff in the middle by using the bug above. Those things become unusable by your race.
3) I saw a ton of out biome objects:

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

Damn, traveling and looking for fams may be boring, especially without a horse. Maybe give a buff for Non-specialists, let them be cartographers, some kind of minimap available for every member of family. There would be no "fog" on that minimap in places where your fam members were (perhaps only past 5 generations, otherwise could be too op, idk). Whatever, probably wouldn't be easy to implement it anyway, and probably too "magic" for this game.

Btw, this kind of limitation is much better than skills/tools thing. Skill/tools thing gives me some kind of psychological block to do things, idk, maybe I'm weird and it's just me big_smile Yet I play ohol close to zero because of that.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

Jason I really admire your diligence, but you can do the same without complicating the whole game.

Just code so that only brown people can use the knife on the rubber tree.

And that only black people could get water from a hot spring.

And so with gingers it's a little harder - maybe make a small 3x3 zone around a tarry spot?

Even with an invisible wall, it will be more realistic, than an immediate illness after entering the forbidden biom.

It seems to me that it will be much easier to code.

Why should everyone except a special race be deprived of bananas or seal fur?

And I still think it's a stupid idea.

And racist, especially towards whites.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

Ilka, I thought about that, but I was concerned about messaging.  You go to slash a rubber tree, and it just doesn't work?  With this version, it's very clear that you're sick.

I also wanted it to be way more than just one item blocked.  I want you to trade seal coats and bananas, etc.

I'm also adding more ways to make each skin tone "at home" in their special biome.... stay tuned for Monday.

Thaulos, yeah, I knew about that click-across issue.  I think I can fix it server-side to scan the whole path instead of just the destination, though that might be processing-intensive.... I'll check.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

My family just died out becuase our village ran out of water when our pump broke we had only browns an gingers no blacks to go in the dessert for more sulfer... thanks sad. This update would of made more sense if the Rift were still around maybe just a bigger rift. a continent isn't infinite and finding a family not related an of a different skin tone then you is extremely rare now but now we have to rely on those other families to live?? I don't get it sad. Bring back the rift if you don't want this update to wipe families. With no water we could make no pies or bread we could water no bushes or crops, we could make no stew. The only solution to our lack of water was the rubber seal to our pump. All our ponds were dried and no families could enter the dessert. We had an evil tyrant that killed The only person who could enter as a form of griefing.

Could you make seal fur coats renewable then? Otherwise theres no reason to trade the best chest clothing item in the game away.

Could be something like making a lure with red hair to get them out of ice holes, or breeding them like wolves. smile

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

Maybe it should be easier to find other families, so that you're guaranteed to find at least one family of each type in time. Otherwise it can feel like you're screwed either by the game or by your grandparents, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

Perhaps we could craft a dousing rod, but instead of point toward the nearest viable water source, it points us toward the nearest brown person.

Plenty of people have suggested before that you use different servers for different versions of the game in one way or another.  Here that would mean a test server and not releasing a full-fledged update on bs2 until it had gotten fully tested.

I love how everyone just completely ignored the bug milkweed posted in which you can literally insta-drop bloody weapons. They even turn un-bloody for you!

Good shit.

This should not be fixed by relying on mod users to find other towns.   Most players do not use any mods.     This needs to be addressed somehow in the vanilla game.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

Couple thoughts from one hour of life.

1. Searching for other towns is more difficult and time consuming now that you can't follow fault lines through certain biomes.
2. Most towns are still too distant to feasibly make a road between them.
3. Maps are absolutely essential, I'm seeing them mass produced and stockpiled in multiples.
4. Players overwhelmingly prefer moving to create multiracial towns over traveling and trading between them.
5. As a result outsiders are often welcomed with confused smiles instead of being treated with suspicion or hostility like before.

Aside from the bugs it's... sort of? working.

Re: Plan for this week's update (2-phase update)

So I just played a few lives in the new update and a couple of suggestions outside of bug fixes

1) Make Gingers have temp bonus in arctic, so arctic biome isn't as cold for them.
2) Make Brown immune to yellow fever... I thought they might be so I killed myself with mosquitoes accidentally... lol
3) Make Brown have lower temp in jungle than other skin types
4) Make Black have lower temp in desserts

Or maybe just flat temp bonus to gingers and temp minus to black and brown

Skin tone ranking:

S-Tier: Ginger, access to all of the best clothing items + controls oil supply
A-Tier: Black, access to horses, dyes + sulfur
B-Tier: Brown, access to rubber and other jungle plants
C-Tier: White, universal translator

Poor Vanillas.   They really get the short end of the stick, specilization-wise.
