The Math On Shrimp

Let's do the math for shrimp!

You make a big net.
You fish for shrimp.
You have a 20% to catch a batch of shrimp, problem is there's a 5% to break the net.
It costs a small ball of yarn or shearing two sheep to fix the net.
So you get 4 batches of shrimp per two sheep sheared on average.
Also need to cook each batch of shrimp on hot coals, but theoretically you could cook dozens of things on one hot coals so the cost of that is very very little if you're optimal.
I'm going to measure the cost of cooking 4 things on hot coals as 4 'fractions' of kindling. An ambigious unit of measurement.

4 batches of shrimp is 16 shrimp which will give you 176 food. Stew gives you 224 by comparison. Almost 80% as much.
Now how much is the cost of shearing two sheep? Two bowls of berries and carrot? Well no, because you also get your normal dung and mutton from raising sheep which any town is already doing. So the cost is only the cost of using the shears twice and not doing whatever else you could've done with the two balls of yarn: making 2 medical pads, making 1 wool booty, or saving for bigger wool clothing.
Very different kind of cost than the foods we're used to, but I think it might be a pretty good food.
Although you can't mass produce. Another usage of fleece is also nice. Can get even more out of our sheep now.

176 food per 2 fleece + 4 fractions of kindling
or
88 food per fleece + 2 fractions of kindling

Re: The Math On Shrimp

This just help breaks sheep even more.

And at the same time, pigs still suck

I don't think you factored in the cost of skewers.

Shrimp don't break skewers so as long as you dont use them on certain other tasks they will never break. Using a skewer for almost anything other than farming doesnt use any of the uses, but just always returns a weak skewer(last use) regardless of how many uses it had before.

Re: The Math On Shrimp

i wouldn't mind a nerf on mutton, both mutton and sheep meat gets out of hand quick
not sure what would be the fix, excess fleece wouldn't be bad

maybe extra transition to medium size sheep? has no meat but has dung and fleece, and big sheep has meat and fleece but no dung

Re: The Math On Shrimp

Shrimping is honestly what fishing should have been in the first place.

Fishing:
-Requires nonrenewable bait. Once you're out of worms you're out of worms forever.

-You lose more often with fishing. The odds of catching a fish are 15%, the odds of straight losing are 25% and you have to recast or break even 60% of the time. Big yikes.

-Encourages solo play. Not exactly a bad thing but you never need nor want a bunch of towns folk fishing at one time. Since fishing already doesn't come with extra worms more fisherman just means you burn through the job faster and future generations can't do it.

-Too much food. Sounds dumb right? But because an arctic char is worth 20 pips it's almost always going to have some amount of its value wasted on people. The only people who can eat this without waste are adults who risk starving themselves to death which frankly isn't worth it.

-Age restriction. You need to be twelve before you can start fishing in game which means it's not something you can immediately pass on to your children. This means you have to recruit either nearly fertile women or young men to start a fishing career which by that time they've likely figured what they want to do with their time in the village.

Shrimping:

-"Bait" is a byproduct of the compost cycle. You are almost always going to have spare fleece and when compared to what this fleece can be turned into nets and fixing nets is by far your best option. Obviously some fleece should be saved for pads and needle + thread but the rest should be going to the  shrimpers.

-Shrimping has a higher win rate. Shrimp right away have a flat 20% win rate, a 5% lose rate, and a 75% break even or recast rate. This means you're more likely overall to get shrimp in comparison to fishing and honestly makes shrimping more fun to do.

-Shrimp are more food with more bites. Because each shrimp ends up being 11 pips and gives four servings at a time you get less wasted pips while also making more food overall. This means shrimping are just a better food than arctic char by a mile due to both of these factors.

-Shrimping encourages group play. Unlike fishing where you want only one fisherman, shrimping encourages more shrimpers huddled around one ice pond fishing together. Whether you get the nostalgia from playing runescape with a bunch of people around a fishing spawn or just like to be able to chat while working shrimping can and is much more sociable than fishing.

-No age restriction. This means you can teach your children your trade and watch as child grows along with your pile of shrimp. Depending on how much shrimp you're cooking at a time this means you know your child is always around a lot of food which then increases their chances of surviving through the harsh years of childhood.

Basically anyone who looked at shrimp when it popped up could have told you it was going to be great. I personally hope if he adds a boot to the shrimp table it's taken from the recast % and not the win %. I'd honestly love to see more good variations of "fishing" added to the game as it's a very chill way to play.

Weak skewers which have infinite uses are used

there's a bunch of solutions tbh:

raw food decay
make pigs poop too and nerf compost or sheep dung
make only pigs poop and have sheep for thread

Animals need some redesign, just like buildings.
