You just finished growing the milkweed, you make the lasso, catch the horse, feed it, put the saddle and attach the cart to it.
Village is low on iron so you fill the horsecart with baskets and head in any direction, on your way to finding a vein you fill the baskets with iron and maybe some copper, you finally find a vein and go back to village to make the different tools for a stanchion kit.
You dock your horse and empty the baskets, you had a spare rope in your backpack ready to make the bucket for the mining kit, you start forging a pickaxe and has you hit that final strike with your hammer on the hot steel you hear the familiar whistlhing sound of someone riding a horse.
You turn your head to check the fence but you already know it, the horse is gone.
From this point on you can consider it lost or at best it will come back when you are too old and cant use it anymore
That's what i would usually do and depending on the village most of the time that's what would end up happening
But if you only take a few seconds on your first trip to pick up the milkweed from the green biomes you pass by and make three ropes you can quickly make a new horsecart and get all the iron from the vein
And if the horse is still there you can either make another horsecart or a bunch of buckets/carts/other
If you do that each time you travel on horse you can make enough horsecarts that the village will always have one available when you need it

If I can find or make a backpack, I do something similar to that. I catch the horse, tame and saddle him. Then scout for the veins before even making the cart or mine kit. During those scouting runs is when I will also make rope and strings in the wild. When i come back I usually have both a vein spot and everything needed to make the things necessary for the mine.
Also people tend to not take horses without carts for some reason? So I never worry about it dissappearing while I'm making the cart and mine kit.

I'm flying high. But the worst is never first, and there's a person that'll set you straight. Cancelling the force within my brain. For flying high. The simulator has been disengaged.

Sounds good, but eventually you'd be going insane distances to get 3 ropes. It would only work a few times in any direction.
Either way, I'll keep this in mind

Q: Snakes kill horses without carts, but with carts they just require a rope to fix, right?

Milkweed is ~10x more common than ground iron, so the iron search radius should usually be bigger than the rope search radius. If you're already in the wilds for iron, it shouldn't be much extra work. Maybe I'm missing something?
