s13 marathon and hardened row pen

it all started when i went to discord and someone was asking for joining s13 as they found a decay town

I was born Abdelrahman Abdelrahman II, a girl to the eve, with a guy making fences to the left, i noticed the berry field, which was in a cold biome, but was a lot of them
also a lot of bones, a huge family was there and were tons of iron, a vein right next o farms and tons of soil, but only one well to left, one pond, later discovered 2 more ponds top right

they cut out the dead berry bushes and i noticed that it has a square shape inside it
i remembered my plan before of making a pen only consisting berry bushes as walls, and so i did, kind of half of it was done anyway
eventually they finished fences and they put a door on it, and they got sheep in it, so i didn't had to rush
as we had only few people i was sure i can born back so i did
i had a girl evee, raised by my mom, and i born as her grandkid
completed the 5x5 inside, and covered with boards, also tilled a lot of soil which were used to plant other stuff

i opened the pen wall as the bushes already blocked the sheep on the right

then i thought i make it bigger, 7x6
so i did, i needed one more life to complete it, made basic tools over and over, made a pen entrance from adobe they left in pen, digged out a fence line which was around the bearcave
made buckets, upgraded well

one daughter gathered me some stone and later i made a cistern in middle of the formation, was 7x6 so i put it a bit below middle
we had a few bear attack but no one was harmed, actually i seen in action that bear can move trough 5 items even more

we had a guy shooting last arrow then he got a pig, in meantime a girl was born
we had some randoms and this time she abandoned her cause was really newbee, i saved the girl and named maddison, and good that i did cause all others died early, then she wanted the pig to die, and i was agreeing with it, i killed the wild boar, a guy died to it
then the other was arguing with the last female and i didn't wanted to risk
we still made the pig pen, let them be happy
eventually they made dog pen too and last hour we were flooded with dogs

a girl had triplets but didn't really cared about them, i named them and raised them and tasked them with simple stuff as they were total newbees, they werent bad intentional, bit dirty mouth but they werent a threat, they didn't knew much, one i put to make boards, one to fix berries, one to get sheep meat
i showed her how to make paper and write, she had a girl and i had to feed that one too, but that noob also died 1 minute later
and the last of triplets quit on us, we were both old and tired, so we died out in the end

i seen a few eves run around, one even helped getting out all the kindling we had between berries
one girl was going around with a horse, found us from 5k away, and she was even fertile for like 3 minutes but had no kids
so eventually someone will find it, still in good shape
we made one newcommen well, havent bothered with machines or new update
i could have made a car all this time

its still possible, i made 3 kilns and made some charcoal each life to get rid of the branches and kindling, and there is a second kiln near the pen with some iron, ideal to make a car shop there

the end result(almost end result, i eventually put some sheep in it):

it took me less time to make a 5x5 than they made those fences earlier
the bushes: 5 bushes block the movement of animals just like a wall (except hungry grizzly bear)
the walls: they are a style choice mostly, but they also allow to have some free tiles, as you see the boards
boards: just to prevent planting on those tiles, very limited on the middle, but if you got corner walls the whole diagonals can be boards
bottom walls: you need 15 bushes to block a 5x5 or a line of walls, as the diagonals are less than 5 tiles, ofc you can have more walls and just 1-2 sides hardened rows/bushes

yes this is a functional sheep or other animal pen, it keeps animals inside if they are inside and keeps out if they are out
spent like 6 lifes here, actual time to make is like 90 min if the surroundings are good

learning from the experience, i came up with a new design:

5x5 pen costing 24 walls (just as a normal one), basically you can just turn the walls out

I'm the eve from the other camp. I was the one that domesticated the sheep and wrote the older notes. I know the other player that established the camp that you were at so I went to the camp and plastered your adobe so that it wouldn't crumble. The camp looks great!

had a useful son, rufus, who got some limestone, planted milkweed, wheat and carrot, had in mind but didn't expected to die out yet, i was very tired anyway, yes its fully functional and very easy to make rubber, as there are 4 trees south, and enough carts to get them
also a lot of iron stil there for the newcommens, and the left side kiln is good temperature and far away from babies

So I had a corner of a pen up against a berry patch [5 diagonal, 8-10 long] and had a lamb somehow run through the 8 to die on the empty tile beyond it. Also had a sheep with a baby run through the diagonal 5. The pen was nowhere near full and fairly large [4x6 interior] so I can't imagine the mess there'd be if it'd been a full sheep pen, or the walls were ALL berry bushes.. Keep in mind this was literally minutes after I'd just gotten our first sheep.

Definitely not an escapeproof design by any means, given I had sheep escaping minutes after getting my mouflon in lol. Even after double and triple checking the rows were at least 5 wide, I literally ended up just having to cap it off with a base so I'd stop losing any sheep with a lamb.

you need 15 to cover 5 wide pen
diagonals can be deceiving
not sure if update changed something
with this i havent tested much, last 30 mi nwhen we died out with a few sheep

i used many times 5 bushes to block, never seen escapes, was smaller scale tho

maybe update changed something, i just seen a bear move inside trough top, and i already made right side, and it skipped trough like 7 items

maybe when the muflon and lamb split, it shoots it out, then there is 12,5% chance that goes toward the bushes, and there is a small chance that its on the side of the free tiles, which is like very low chance, if it wont happen with muflon im fine with it but yeah, not the best result

wonder if we could put mouflon other side of the berries and it would send lambs to a pen trough 5 bushes
