So, ever since graves were introduced, every single player is making graves, takes the very single shovel and digs all those suicide babies in any random spot. you can take it 50 tile away, they still find it, they arrange in a big dumb block, regardless who it was, did they know them or not and dig it. they don't care if others starve in meantime, or to get some soil or make some compost, they want to honor the death and let the living die to honor them too.
that's what the first figure symbolizes, the main problem is that the center ones will never ever get finished and cant be reached anyway
we had the arguments about grave pens, some people like to rp, some cases is nice, someone saves you as baby or is a new eve there, you set agrave, if the village is running fine is totally ok
figure two:
you get a pass trough graves, you can put notes or roses on them
figure three: you can build a wall out of graves, especially in desert villages, blocks snakes until you get a knife (i seen huge deserts and snakes wonder around, with 20+ snakes is hard to kill all), also blocks peope going into the center which has no benefit whatsoever
same for jungle and mosquitoes, you do two things at once
figure four
you can also build a wall in circle forming a room/garden/pen
quite practical for storing carrots, bowls, even sheep meat or tools
also i found it that most newbees wont eat carrots from graves
you can also use graves to teleport carrots by lifting the stone and putting it back
since we got roads, people will make roads from graveyards, forge stones, grave pens, with no goal or practical value
fast roads prevent havign grave walls, most cases in a jungle i would prefer mosquito deffence than walking faster
actually diagonal roads arent annoying at all, you cant fast travel without wanting to, you need to stand on a road like that and cilick a diagonal to go there, vertical ones can lead you to there by clicking anywhere, when you do nothing just run around city looking for drama or dancing like a moron, you want a straight fast road, but when you try to work, you don't need that fast running

Why didn't grave pens take off, instead of oven bases and tower bases? Seems like they'd be a hell of a lot faster and easier, and only cost a little more iron.
Too easy to accidentally break them?

actually had a few indirect nerfs
you need high population near badlands or desert to have enough flat rocks close by
it was mostly sentimental reasons, morti and others were pretty pissed on grave pens when i first showed people its possible, some people liked it and i seen a few, one was even lasting 70 gen and 2 more families of 30 or so without fixing it down (first town with a teleport)
you need to be fast enough to make as newbees see bones in a square shape they thinks it's a graveyard and fill with bones and sometimes they even dig the middle, so you need to finish it in like 20 min before noob kids noticing it
and put the sheep inside
then its still to grieve-able as a lot of people don't know what is a pen, not like why its bad to throw a flat rock down
they don't even put it back just throw down on a free tile if they click on it
so to make it work you need to fix with U letters, chisel and mallet, and that's 2 man job or like 90+ minutes even for a 3x3
i did a few times and its awesome to just put the dead lambs and bowls, carrot on the grave (havent checked sheep meat, should work now with smaller size)
but then came the road update and people make roads everywhere wasting all the flat rocks on it
then people cried about locked rooms so jason ruined every type of un-removable tile, roses, boxes and graves can be intentionally grieved very easily
tower bases are actually very fast due to the half stone and you only need to hit stakes once
i do half adobe walls instead of oven bases, its just a bit more work but works the same, with the possibility of making it last with plaster and paint
mainly people don't care about size or aesthetics, mostly about speed and easy fixes
skewers are not that common and skewer farms are very rare, people still make 10 home markers, 5 knitting needle, 20 arrows or letters
if you shovel down a grave wall it takes a while to fix it
so needs 2 skilled people to make a grave pen, enough bones and still a lot of distraction, its still worth for the extra storage
main problem are the road makers and the grave diggers, if you try to make one, people fill it with bones and steal the flat rocks

Adobe pens have the same shovel cost as bell tower bases (if using the reed tops for adobe + shoveling the reeds) or no shovel cost if using only the tops. Adobe also have no age requirement unlike bell tower bases. Grave pens exist in the same tier as fences where it's one shovel use per pen piece which isn't exactly what we call a great going rate.
The biggest offender of grave pens is you either have to engrave them (one skewer per grave) otherwise someone will rip the walls down to make themselves eggs. Along with the engraving issue now graves require a single uses of the shovel to remove which means they're just as vunerable as bell tower bases.
Adobe was favored for easy access to materials, no age limit to build the pen (vs 14 to pick up stone blocks), and ease of expanding.
fug it’s Tarr.

I personally like to replace a pen with fences after the town reached a stable stage. Not only it looks nicer but from my opinion it is less greievable.
Offline
replace it with boxes, no point making it a chest as it can be destroyed same way and people respect it to not make carts out of it
