Building, Well Buildings...

So out of all my favorite things to do in this game building is my favorite. Mainly because if you do it right your projects can last indefinitely. Only problem is making even one building takes up so much time that im trying to find anyway possible to cut down on the time it takes and to do that i wanna adress some issue i got:

1. When digging big stones the shovel takes up space if you choose to bring it back, and if you leave it you have to waste time going back to pick it up, how do we fix this?

2. Are tire carts or horses better for hauling stone easier?

3. Where should you place the stone halves when you drop them off, on top of where you are building it, right next to it, or somewhere else?

4. In what order should you be building?  i.e walls, floors, doors, forges, ovens, boxes, etc.

5. Should you build as you get the resouces to make walls and floors, or should you wait until you have as much as you need, and then start building?

6.  right after you dig up a rock should you chisel it? or shovel all the rocks in the area and then go back around to chisel them? While were on the subject should you transport the rocks you just chisels or should you make a 2nd trip for them?

7. Whats the best way to build with twins (a.k.a a friend or helpful villager)

Re: Building, Well Buildings...

1. I imagine its best to dig your whole quarry of big rocks, then bring the shovel/broken tool back just once

3. I normally just build pens, but placing the cut stones in their final spot (excluding the first wall) works out because I can swap the stakes for them as I go.

4. Absolutely build your floors first; they help fully insulate walls, and are the fastest way to give you/your descendants an idea of the size/placement of the room. Depending on aesthetics, you may want to place floors on and outside the doorway, or none at all. Note to fully insulate the walls, you'll need to hide floors behind horizontal walls, and let floors stick out of vertical walls. After walls, its best to place two doors to limit griefing, each near opposite corners.

5. Never knowing when I might get tree-snaked, I place as much of the ^floor^ plans as possible so my descendants can understand the big goal.

6.  Definitely dig all rocks and return the shovel before chiseling (Though thinking now, if the shovel and mallet come back in one trip that could be good). I personally prefer getting the tools back to camp as soon as I'm done with them because, again, tree-snakes.

A lot of it depends on the scope and purpose of the building.

Re: Building, Well Buildings...

just shovel it up and count it
i prefer stone blocks, newcommen can make a big room which blocks humans, or even a decent pen, while stone is just annoying if its too small, but even if its big it covers a lot

carry the chisel in apron and you can leave the mallet, they arent that expensive and you will mostly break it anyway, pack is even better but apron is enough
i prefer to chisel it in place, and bring it back once the cart is full, leave the chisel if no pack, go back for it, go to next stones
you can move big stones fast by standing next to them and dropping from one side to another side of you, it wont slow you down, i just group them this way, group 2 or 4 of them and you can go there back with a cart and just take the ready materials

most important is heat and position of the room, purpose
don't just build in middle of the desert, jungle rooms are far superior, and if no mossquitoes are insidewhen you close it, they wont enter
if you use pen type entrance. you can have your normal door on it, just plant 3 roses and a dry potato in front of door, this prevents any animals entering and to block the entrance they need to water potato, wait, put soil, wait and 6 times dig with shovel to put a wall there, extra bushes block newcommens too, but i suggest minimum size 5x5 and 2 entrances at least

i just make it on the go, plan the size and count the tiles so for example max 3 tiles inside desert or not overhanging the jungle
use multiple stakes
placing is easy, 2 people can hit stakes and 2-3 gather

if you got stakes in it, then put the material outside of it , if not put where you think the walls should be

if you are slow, start with the floors, people will make a room around floors (i had my hardened row experiment where i made a 5x5 board floor and tiled 225 tiles of soil around it to use as a pen, they planted wheat and took the rest of soil then made a room in a few generations
i would say start with door then L shape wall, so if you don't finish it, someone can make it bigger

i would say if you want a forge room, make the kilns 3 from top wall, 2 from each other and 2 on each side, that's 7 wide, and 7 tall, inner side, that's a good setup

any smaller than that just defeats the purpose

you can make it from newcomen and just place every second tile a stone block than diagonal down and back, a 7 tile hexagon, looks weird but works

Re: Building, Well Buildings...

So, besides aesthetics (which is totally a sufficient reason in and of itself) what's the utilitarian purpose to making buildings?

I like to have floors to designate specific areas as dedicated to specific functions, which helps reduce clutter and encourages people to spread out. But I'm not sure what benefit walls and doors provide.

Walls and floors mainly provide bounderies, if you got a smith building, people are less likely to walk over the stuff your forging and to put stuff that doesnt belong there in the room. This makes people that dont have a purpose being there stay out of that building/space and go somewhere else where they would be more useful. In general buildings are a mid to late tech because its more of a counter-measure against a village thats becoming too big too just let clutter run around. Also roads are good for fast traveling but pretty counter productive in villages where you wanna slow down and interact with stuff.
