By now, most of us have noticed how much space graveyards take.
It was already an issue with bones piling up at the edge of cities before burrials, but now with the berry farm providing a stable supply of food, cities are growing bigger and so do cemetaries.
The introduction of named graves was a really great idea, especially in early settlements, mothers could see which of their child had just died, and make plans accordingly, also in big cities, players could find their direct deceased relatives, like mothers and siblings, and leave the 3rd cousin five times removed to it's own relatives.
The introduction of some form of mass grave could be a good idea, it would have a similar mechanic as trash pits, maybe a bit more elaborate to make to not have the feeling of just throwing our dead to the trash, maybe has to be done on a stone floor or something, but not so hard that it would take half a lifetime to set it up, I'm sure Jason can work that out.
Since you can ony see the names of those that died during your lifetime, a visual cue could be usefull to differ the recent graves that might still have relatives alive even if you don't see any names, from really old graves where we can be sure nobody alive today would know them. Maybe a name change (from fresh grave to old grave like with the bones) or a new sprite, like it would be full of moss or something.
In addition, why not creating a special burrial tool, like a spade, so that shovels wouldn't be used up so fast as they are now.
Another thought that I had writing this post, would be a way to have an eve recognition, so that everybody would know how special that particular skeleton/grave is. We could have the word "eve" added to the list for gravestones, or the bones of an eve would keep the name forever, because early settlements usually don't have time to mark a stone and of course later, the bones becoming annonymous nobody has a clue how important those are, so that even future generations in more stable cities, would recognise it and be able to build a shrine or mausoleum or something, adding some more RP into the game.
I will be eve tana. If not an eve, my kids will be called numerically : Primo, Duo, Tertio, Quattro, Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Octavius etc... ending with an -a if you're a girl.

The unburied bones only last 2 hours so they don't pile up so badly. Most big towns are mostly graves and maybe like a third berry bush fields.
I think the new update will lower the insane levels of berry spam.

It's only the unmoved bones that can despawn. Most unwanted babies choose the worst spots to die in so they have to be moved. Other times janitors think they are helping by moving the old bodies to the graveyard but thats why the corpses pile up so fast. If all bones despawned if not buried in two hours that would help with the large graveyard issue.

One day, there will be something we can craft with bones. Bone glue or bone armor or something like this, surprised bones have no use atm, I mean bone tools are a thing, even up to the Viking age people were using them.
Still find it super weird that we just jump to steel from stone. maybe one day he will expand it.

burn bones to make ashes and a storage for them
or kids should have different bones, only 10+ or higher age to be buried

I wouldn't mind a ctatcombs type deal, where we can store bodies efficiently.
However, this falls into storage catagory... Which we all know there are issues with that ... No?

Could be just a use for bones, like soup or crafting..
Grave spam isn't really any fun and it uses a lot of resources.
Can't we just remember people in our minds?

Wanted to say the last bit with the eve grave provoked some thoughts.
You want more decorations?
You can go as far as you want with what we have now.
First example would: you could make a 3x3 room and seal in the first Eve's bones with stone wall. Bigger room, more decorations!
I am more curious about the plethora of other options of preparing the dead for rest.
As of right now, bones are all we got.
But later we may have things like mummy burials, deep catacombs, open pit-like mass Graves, ocean burials(Viking burials any1?), pyres, other forms of cremation etc..
There are containers wilhich could be added. Like gold sarcophagus, urn, caskets, buildings...
There are materials things can be made of such as what we have now like stone, gold, wood and Reed. In the future depending on the tech tree: platinum, zinc, tin, other stone types like granite, marble, slate, basalt .. etc
That's the burial stuff.
What could also be added in is decomposition.
You have a body that decays, and depending on what you are planning with remains and how you degrade a body detirmines what you can do with it.
Such as a body left in the desert with salt will be gone the mummification. Process, so long as an advanced enough civ has crafted the tools and removed the organs. Then with tree saps and cotton (future cloth material??) And oils finish the mummy process.
But that's a lot to code for a programmer.
Not to mention:
Tools needed, chemicals need to be added for a much modern town: formaldehyde to preserve corpses is the first one I can think of, you would also need biomes to effect the process of decay.
Marshes are great if you wanted to go for a bog burial.
Children don't produce fossilizable bones until a few months, but that can be extended on OHOL to be a few years (like after they pick stuff up), so an unwanted child corpse cod just be fed to the wolves for you sick puppies out there(or more au natural types).
(Side note, feeding corpses to wild animals increases wild animal pop? So more dangerous animals means corpses should be managed)
That's all I got for my lunch break.
Share your ideas!

So according to the github recipe page, all bones despawn in two hours unless buried. if bones are left on the floor that takes three hours to despawn

I like all three ideas! What would the spade be made of? Would it require smithing? Would the sprite be smaller than the shovel? Like a handheld spade?

i like the idea of being able to inscribe last words. like if u were there to witness someone's death u can etch on their name and last words instead of just "mother" or "brother". would need a lot of space tho. maybe important ppl should be able to get tombs with massive plaques that hold their last words. itd be great if it was just "oh fuck"
also the idea of family graves are really cool. ik in lots of cultures there are family crypts. in my culture we have a burial mounds where family members are buried. it makes a lot of sense to be able to pile bodies together into one family grave since single plot graves are a relatively new invention.
also cremation would be cool. so like
body + furnace + adobe = ashes (in like a few minutes. maybe like 3)
ashes in furnace + bowl = bowl of ashes
which then u could put into a jar which could be a bowl which u seal with clay
or u could let it go to the wind by dumping out the bowl
we could have a whole funeral industry
edit: also mummification would be cool! maybe if u die in the wastes instead of becoming bones u mummify (n u can only start decomposing if someone pours water on u) and u can be put in a cart for transportation. if an eve dies out in the desert we could bring her mummified body back and worship it as a saint!! all the possibilities...

If you give a survival purpose to bones then prepare for all your ancestors to get deterred whenever they're needed. Don't have any more ashes or glue? Why don't we just go unearth the Eve's grandkids and use their bodies? Not a great idea imo
