(unsubstantiated rumor)

Yeah, the (outdated) wiki says that, air quotes "throwing lots at one person can kill them" I've tried nearly a whole life as a ginger to see if this was true, it was dissapointing, it used to be lethal but it was changed

Snowballs being lethal was a bug. Throwing three snowballs in a short time at somebody would have killed them.
Snowballs used to disarm people which was really cool and fun but Jason removed after the combat reword (the auto aim update which ruined combat forever)

Just tested it, and Homesick emote is working.  Also hot pepper working.

Maybe one of the mods didn't get the emotionWords.ini setting?

About that yes it appears to be a me problem.
I made a github issue about it but when I learned that it was just me I closed it.
I forgot to metion it here and I am sorry.
Not sure if it's the mod's fault since I have heard others that use the same mod that don't have the issue.
I have played only one life so it may work the next.

Haven't seen it go beyond 50-60 players for around  one two three months. For those saying ''You aren't playing in USA peak hours'' I say when I play it used to reach around and above 100 three months ago. Now there are 38 and has been like that for a while. A year ago it used to be around 200 or more. This is just sad.

Hmmm this is a tricky question

For one the art work displayed in the newley added ''dung box'' in OHOL is indeed a masterpiece the line work showcased in Survive Together is on a whole new level!

TL;DR: Tom's sprites for OHOL were the best, still courious why did him and Jason part ways

Book, unfortunately, I'm not looking for political objections to any game design elements.

If the game turns you off for political reasons, well....  I guess that's where we'll have to part ways.

If we want different groups of people to have different abilities, than the most straight-forward way to implement that in game is to have those people have different appearances, so that the abilities can be recognized visually, given that you will be actively seeking out a player with this or that ability.

Furthermore, in real life, the people who live in an area DO have more knowledge about that area, and are appealed to as experts.  Travelers do hire local guides for a reason.  Furthermore, the people who live in different areas of the world do look different.  This, to me, is no big deal, and not offensive.  It's a beautiful and amazing part of the world, also known as diversity.

This isn't represented perfectly in the game, but it's represented in a way that people can understand, based on their experience from real life.

Now, separate from the political objections...

Is there an objection to the mechanic of different players in the game having different innate abilities?

Obviously, it tends to short-circuit your pre-formed plan for what you want to do in this particular life.  "Dammit, there's no way I can make X in this life, because I wasn't born as the right type of person."

Obviously, that's part of the point, because this is not meant to be a game where you have full control over your upcoming life.  This is a game, in part, about relinquishing control, based on your unique surroundings and situation.

You also might want to make a car in your life, but then get born into a town where they don't even have Newcomen tech yet.

Family specialization could bring a lot to the game but the current implantation just makes the game boring. What if instead of needing all races to get the resoucres needed for one thing one race could make a finished product and then trade it for another finsihed product. This way you can have the ''rich social interactions'' that you want so much and not take away the fun from us. Wanting to make something fun but failing because you need X from Y family and you spend your whole live travaling to find Y (travel is very boring in this game btw it needs some improvement), then you need magic paper to communicate and when you finally get X and return home you die and can't make the thing you wanted.

Sure you may excuse it by ''not eveyrhting irl has to be fun, some things just need to get done'' and yes that's true but this is not real life, this is a video game and well we play video games to have fun... and if your game isn't fun then people won't play it

Maybe it would be better if families had everything to make X but needed to trade X with Y for Z. Also different famillies could have benefits too as well as restrictions. Brownies are better cooks, they are better at producing food (Maybe when a borown makes food it's special and gives more pips or more yum) and they also have a lot of resoucres to make unique food in the jungle, their special biom. However dark chocolate people have an advantafe at makin Z stuff and so on.

On top of that a race's special biom should be hospitable to them and they should be incouraged to settle in this bioms. Like brownies have perfect temperature in jungles (or have a better temperature than the other and can do stuff to get an even better temperature vale as the wheel of progres spins) Are immune/can kill musquittos and have cheap building matterial like gingers have for snow.

Heck this way families have a reason to NOT merge together! A dark chocolate person cannot live with the brownies in the jungle but a brownie and a dark choco could settle together in a green biom if they wish but as a drawback they won't enjoy the bonuses of their home envirorment.

Also a cool thing it would be if the different families could make different style clothing, structures, gadges etc. Like Brownies make more tropical styled stuff, black choco more tribal african, gingers more Siberian or Nordic and whites (if they get a special biom)

This all sounds like fun. Yes I understand that it would require a lot of work and content added but wouldn't it be worth it? Everybody is whining about family specialization and begging for new content. If you ask me this would be a better adittion than yet another shohorned change nobody asked for that takes fun away and trying to bandage it over would take away your concentration from adding content and so on

#33 Re: Main Forum » Jason's misunderstanding » 2020-02-26 18:45:53

Jason I think you didn't understand me correctly. In this allegory this person came to me and asked me for sulfur, because he needs it for his town survival. I did not ask him for latex or palm oil but instead gave him the sulfur for free. You may ask why I did that? Well why not? Sulfur has no value to me it takes almost no work to get (other than going to a spring and clicking it) and I can very easily get me more sulfur. There is no trade, no social challange, he didn't do anything to get the sulfur other than walk a very boring journey (for real travel in this game is sooo boring and sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying). There was no fun in that. Now you may ask why didn't I ask for anything in return? A) What can he even give me? You may say latex but does this person have time for this? He is a traveler overall who has great distances to go through and considering I am asking for latex he needs to be brown which means no horse. He has no time for that, he wants to have fun and not wasting his time getting 4 rubber tirres that will get used up in two minutes, and what if he is white or ginger? He has nothing of interest to me then. Even if he is willing to give me latex I would still give the sulfur for free because well, I don't lose anything and get to make somebody happy. Why would I be a dick and refuse to give him sulfur? Even if I refuse him he can still ask others to give it for free and they will most likely or just steal some if there are in town and nobody will bet an eye. Is this a fun social interaction? No there bearly was one. The problem of getting sulfur is not the negociation but simply finding people, which is just boring. Now the meta is just staying in one big bell town with nothing to do in. Why? Well eves rarely spawn and pseudo eveing is a death sentence since the hard part is collecting the 4 races together. This is just boring. Shouldn't a videogame be fun?

But at least you had to do something creative.... at least the same old thing, repeated, no longer works every time.

Why shouldn't I just give sulfur to this person so their town can prosper. I loose nothing sulfur is free for me. I have sulfur not because I worked hard to get it but because I got born the right colour. I can always get more sulfur for me no problem. Person A sees the sulfur as valuable not because it takes hard work to get but because no matter what he does he can't get it (other than ask for other to get it for him) and yet he needs it for survival. I don't loose anything from giving the sulfur for free, so why shouldn't I just give it to the guy that needs it?

#35 Re: News » Update: Who's Who » 2020-02-10 20:47:46

It's the same for orders, it sayd the order was given by my supreme empress Tarr Gaylord (or some much higher title than the real one) but when I mouse over them it says something like Baroness tarr Gaylord or lady etc. I think the system for the pop ups may choose the title by the number of total followers and not the hirarchical depth. Today when I played I was a lady but with every kid (that follows me automatically) that I got the rank portraited on the roders pop up grew and grew. It may be something else tho, havent tested it

I thought it was a well known bug, realized it since day one of orders. Always getting orders from those Supreme emperors but you never see them and when you find the person with that name, they have  a much lower rank

jasonrohrer wrote:

So why doesn't the "town" make a bigger posse?

A lone person killing a team of 2 griefers was never going to happen, right?  I mean, even before the 12 vs 6 second change.  So making solo killers wait longer isn't going to make things worse.

That is the other forthcoming change that will go along with this:

--If a bigger posse targets you (bigger than the posse you're currently in), you get scared and drop your weapon.

How big is each griefer team?  Do they really have the whole town outnumbered?

Are they using /die to find each other?  Then why don't you have them cursed so they can't be born near you for 30 days?

Are they being born in separate areas and walking to find each other?  Then why aren't you using the available tools to block untrusted outsiders from just waltzing into your town?  If they really have a legit reason for coming in, make them empty their backpack first, and escort them around town with an armed guard for a bit, and watch for signs of trouble.

And if you see a pair of unknown people at your gate, one with a medical apron, just nope.  Target with bow, wait 12 seconds, then open the gate

You hate property fences, and refuse to use them, which would allow you to "ban" whomever you please, in-game.... but then you want me to comb through logs and investigate individual people, hear from witnesses, etc... outside the game?  As if there aren't dozens of other griefers waiting to pop up as soon as I perma-ban one?

I.e., you have a lot more power over your own fate here than you think you do.  And I'm adding more power for you as we speak.

Most people don't know how posses work since it's just one of those weird unexplained in game gimmics.
Asking people to join posses just gives time for the griefers to escape (read what I said above in my comment)

As for curses. Well I have so many curse token to spend. If I have met the griefer before either I didn't had a curse token, accidebtally cursed somebody else (curse you tends to be very shaky with who is the closest person) or I cursed one of the griefers but didn't had a token for the other. Even if I had cursed the grirfer they could still get born BEFORE me or they can get born while I am off town gathering resources or something like that.

Fences, really?!?!?!!? How many times do we have to explain why they are uneffective? Most griefers come from WITHIN and fences can't protect you from that. Gates are left open most of the time since foregners rarely come and opening and closing gates is just annoying. You can't control that since your whole family has access to it since you know I am not gonna give something like only 3 people permision the gates and apoint them as guards since nobody wants to waste an hour of their life sitting in one place opening and closing gates when you can just have no gates. Also why exactly would I not want foregners in? Most griefers come from the inside and there is no way to know if a foegner is a griefer or not (and no sombody wearing an apron with pads is not a give away of somebody being a griefer) and well we DEPEND on foregners for our survival. Remember a few months ago you made this update that just slows  limits what you can do and makes it so unless your town collects all four races it's destined to die, so why would I not let in foregners in? This is some basic knowledge that everybody knows. Jason do you even play your own game?

#37 Re: Main Forum » 12 second killing time punishes non-griefer more than the griefers » 2020-02-07 18:49:03

Just bring back the old combat system from before war swords/autoaim

-Remove posses

-Remove Autoaim, murdermouth, [gasp]

-Remove the wait period before kills

+Bring back snowballs

-remove race restrictions

+Actually keep the shift + right mouse for killing, that was a good change

+keep the ''!''

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Posses aren't very effective against griefers since they have evolved and have started to /die till in one town (bypassing the twin restrictions). Thus the griefers end up abusing the system for killing innocent people

Autoaim is total bullshit. Combat before that was alright, nobody was really complaining about it. I actually liked it very much. It required a bit of skill but not too much. Which ment that exeprianced players could deal with griefers easiely. The old system also gave you a fighting chance if the attacker missed, but now it's just one boring game of tag where the chased has to run into an inhospitable biom and just stay there. In the old system the attacked could either trick the attacker into missing or run to the snow biom and get a snowball to stun the agresor. But now snowballs don't stun and even if they did only gingers could use them (proof that racism update is killing the game number#9248235468)

The wait period before attacking feels very awkward. Like your knife connects to the body of the victim but nothing happens and you don't know when it ends.
It gives too much time for the victim to escape andthe slowering of a single person makes it so you will never catch up. While you may say it's good because it gives newbs an advantage against vets but that isn't true. Newbies almost never utilize the wait period and get stabbed while vets are practically invinsible (going asking people to join your posse just wastes time which the chased can use to escape) and the victim either hides in an inhospitable biom or the attackers give up after they can't see the chassed and lower their guard. However even if the vet escapes he can't do anything if the attacker is a griefer, even if the griefer lowers his guard all that happens is that the roles reverse and if it's a duo or a team of griefers then you are dead.

Now you may say ''But Tarr just ran around towns killing everybody using the old system''. That just ain't true. Yes he ran around towns killing everybody but he did it using the WAR SWORD and he did it to proof how broken the WAR SWORD it was. Just think about it, why didn't he do it before swords? Well because in the old system if he just killed somebody then he was left exposed slowley crowling with the bloody weapon in his hand leaving him to be killed by the town folks if he wasn't able to make a strong case for killing the person.
War swords aren't a problem now not because of the combat overhaul but because  they got nerfed to oblivion and it's preactically as if they don't exist anymore.

#38 Re: Main Forum » Giving people one extra hitpoint » 2020-02-06 19:06:58

Just remove auto aim. Most experianced players don't griefe and tended to have an above avreage comabt skill. Back in the day before auto aim griefers for some reason always sucked (other than that one time Tarr raided villages to show jason that the WAR SWORD was broken). That's easily explainable since if you all you do is kill people and griefe you have very few in game hours
of which most are probably spend in DT so you stay rather bad at PVP, while even your avrerage player picks on it from every day experiance. Also the auto aim has really made combat dry and boring. Like if you get targeted you don't have ANY other choice than just running away and hiding in an inhospitable biom. It's just a game of tag, boring

Still I don't think only people at the age of 55 should be able to make books. I mean why only people at age 55? Like why limit who can make books for no reason at all. I am tired of this restrictions that aren't bases on someone's skill but luck. Sorry you can't make a book because you are a black person that cannot make black dye and even then you are too young to pick up a quill pen. Like whyyyyyyy? It's not as if people at 55 are less likely to grief, it's actually the opposite. At 55 you don't care if you get caught since you don't lose much if you get stabbed and I don't see books or pernement notes as a big way of griefing anyways

#40 Re: Main Forum » Books » 2020-02-05 11:38:32

The biggest problem with the current writting system is that when you put read a ''book'', which is just notes on a basket or slot box, you don't start from the begining but often from the end and read in reverse or somehwere in the middle.

Also I don't think books should use the elder quill pen since well, pick up age 55 and you also need black dye which requires both gingers and brownies to be made...
Like at age 55 you don't even have enough time to write a whole damn book

But yes books would be an amazing feature, which I sincearly hope we get

DestinyCall wrote:

Is anyone really using the royal titles?   I haven't seen one in a while.

I see them from time to time. The problem is that hiarcheries die in one or two generations and you can't set up one wihout going around begging people for followers
Babies following their mother at birth could help a lot to deal with that.

But generaly the hiarchies need a bit of an expansion by Jason

#42 Re: Main Forum » Next step after titles - lands » 2020-01-27 18:23:35

Yes I would love this.
The hierarchy system has a lot of pottential, hopefully he expands it in the future.

Hierarchies need to be more dynamic and stables. Babies should follow their mama and not just follow whoever she follows. This way hierarchies can start without somebody just going around towns begging for followers. Also This way hopefully hierarchies will be less flat. I have never seen someone be hiergher than a duke because everybody just follows one or two people.
Once you follow somebody there could be a 5 or 10 year cooldown before you can unfollow or change alliginace
People always forget to choose an heir which makes every hierarchy doomed after one or two generations. There could be a comman such as ''You are my heir'' or ''Eve Smith is the heir to the throne'' which makes that person the heir (Count Eve Smith heir to the throne) which gifts them the title they inheirted after the death of the person that made them heir.
People would still forget to choose their heir tho so the game could also pick the closest family member as a heir if the king dies and there hasn't been a selected heir by the late king
Or maybe The king can say something which turns a clothing item into a totem of power which once worn by somebody gives them the title and followers (eh I prefer the other ideas more)

Laws would be cool. But as it stands right now laws can't be enforced and are too easy to fabricate. To deal with the fabrication issue I think signitures could do the trick. Basically Quil pen + simmering blue dye makes signature pen that has ten uses (we can't make it like elder quil pen where only one use because we don't have non boiling blue dye that disapears). You can use the pen to sign notes that also turns them pernement. Once signed the note will read whatever the note has written on it plus the name and title of the signature in a different colour. Ex: ''Thou shall not kill -King Louis Bourbon''. The different colour on the signature will make it unforagble. This way we can have laws, contracts, petitions, bank notes and much more. This pen shall not have an age restriction of 55 because then it would just never get used. Whatever the crafting matterials are they shouldn't be expensive or blocked by race restrictions (we want all families to have access to it and it not take lots of work to make).

Maybe the person in the highest position of a hierarchy can declare wars on other hiarchies (instead of random elders at other families)

Maybe the king can apoint a judge by saying ''I apoint you/Eve Smith as judge'' who can use items such as stun battons to stun people and put them in jail? The judge could also give such powers to lesser policemen/guards.
We can have other apointable titles too, like ministers (minister of technological progress, agriculture, transport and storage etc), chancellors, royal cooks/clothiers and many more
